After my interview with Steve Huston (which I recommend you watch) he was kind enough to draw some hands for us. He shows how to break up the hands into basic interlocking forms and how to use cross hatching to get a 3D effect.

Holding Objects and Foreshortened Hands. Probably foreshortened hands are more preferable.
I find cartoon hands on one hand really interesting (since simplification sometimes helps to understand structure/gesture/appeal better) but on the other hand kinda... too easy. I guess more complicated topics would be a little bit more useful, 'cause they are harder to study on your own.
Oh, yeah, and i really wanna to see hands interacting with each other, like holding hands and locked fingers.
Here's the biggest tip for everyone I can offer:
Block out your shapes first and look at the angles of the shape. Don't detail until it looks fantastic with only a few shapes
this. I didn't realize I would mirror subtle angles into the opposite direction if I didn't slow down and make sure the shape block in was nice.

@Proko, please do more of those with him. I actually am not an artist (yet) and I never drawn anything other than frustrating doodles, but I'm finally learning and practicing it correctly and the way Steve draws, his shading process with cross hatching and the way he explained the shapes, etc was very helpful. One of the best shape and gesture breakdown I've seen so far. I mean in a broad way, not hand related.
Extremely helpful. I think the biggest issue I have with anatomy, and not just the hands, is the design invention of it. Too many times i go into "detail overload", drawing what I think i see and never considering what to include and not include, and how to approach my line outside of contour

Very illuminating. I really like how he talks about designing the drawing - this is informed by his anatomical knowledge - its what frees him from merely drawing what he sees.

I like how the fingers he draws look like actual fingers...I can't get mine to look genuine. I struggle with drawing knuckles.

Steve was a sub in several classes at Art Center in 1985-86. Never forgot his instruction.
After listening to Mr. Houston’s interview I was curious what kind of teacher he would be. And after watching this lesson I was not let down, he is amazing. I can see why you have such a high opinion of him, I only wish that more taught with his style.
I enjoyed this entire video, but, strangely, the drawing theory that Steve began at 24:50 was one of my favorite snippets. In addition to that, I write exclusively with fountain pens on a daily basis, but when drawing traditional it's usually graphite, Conté Pierre Noir, a Windsor & Newton brush for inking, etc...filling up a sketchbook of just my fountain pen has always been on my artist bucket list (so to speak). This video fuels me into making that happen. Thanks Steve & Stan.

How to lay out and remember (think?) about the underlying structure of the hand and understand it so that you can draw it from any direction, position. or pose.
To me it is always weird seeing somebody drawing with his or her left hand :D But it was definetly helpful! Thanks for this and for upcoming videos ^^

I notice that a lot of drawing artists do practice stokes above the page first. Sort of like a golfer taking practice swings. Is this a best practice?
Hi Stan, thanks for posting this video. I am curious about the camera set up that you have to record Steve's sketching. What do you use and how do you set it up?
It's a GoPro setup that Stan built. He used the same setup in the Stephen Silver video.

Thanks for the demo. Does the direction of the hatching line matter? Mr. Huston does his from upper left to lower right. Can I do it from lower left to upper right? (on the same drawings in the demo)
bzwatching For hatching, either make all your lines follows the form, or follow the light. In the first example (still watching) he goes left down right because that's the way the light is shining down as well.
Tapa Hoover I think it's also because he's drawing with his left hand. Drawing diagonal from up left to low right is more comfortable for the wrist and arm than the diagonal up right to low left.
