As for this machine, it was once the ugliest C128 ever, and now it's been transformed by a paint brush.

I would add some clear coat to that painted case so the paint will be more difficult to chip and it will also look and feel better to the touch
I second this, a clear coat somewhere between matte and satin, not a shiny one.
It needs a solid coat of matte black.
@@macdonalds1972 Make it cheddar yellow, and I'm all for it.
@@praetorangel8967 Yes. A flat matte clear would help a lot.
I’m pretty sure it is clear coated. You can see it sheen in the video.
Apologies, but something about that paint job doesn't seem correct 😔
@@geekwithsocialskills "art"
Talk to Michelle about it first to make sure it’s compatible, but I’d seriously consider spraying a UV protective clear coat on it.
Yuk. Completely ruined it. I hope that paint can be stripped off.
I didn't like it until I saw it without a bright light directly over it. The end shots look way nicer.
I found a use for prescription bottles (my own) storing various things like screws for specific projects, USB memory sticks, USB adapters etc. Better than them just sitting in a landfill.
That’s a good idea. I store a lot of stuff like that in glass food jars.
Yeah, I have a whole box full of small containers like that. Comes in handy to just grab some out of it when you need them.
Forget tempered glass and RGB; I want this for my PC. The bold colors, gold leaf, and hand-painted feel put me in mind of an illuminated manuscript.
Putting all the yellow keys with the painted case would probably look nice.
I love it, it reminds me of some of the old BMW art cars. I love the idea of taking a business-oriented product, usually bland and boring in appearance, and turning it into something colourful and interesting! There's a thousand identical beige C128s out there, you should be very proud that you own one that is so bold and unique.
As regards the negative comments, I wouldn't take much notice... computer folk generally like logic and mathematics but they aren't so hot when it comes to aesthetics. Therefore, if they don't like it, I'd say the project has turned out perfectly.
@@geekwithsocialskills I have now thanks, great video... Adrian was just like a kid on Christmas morning!
I love the idea of giving old tired business objects a soul. I find it has a similar energy to taking a bland server and playing games on it, like LGR did on that industrial IBM PC. Or converting a shipping container into a beautiful home. Or taking a cheap car nobody cares about and making it into something special (I did that to my old Geo - you don't have to believe me, but that thing made me happy every time I looked at it, almost precisely because it challenges people to reexamine what is deserving of love). I love a clean perfectly restored all-original computer (or car, or...) and have a few myself but I really don't understand the disdain people have for a restomod. Perhaps, some people wish to somehow reconstruct the past. That's fair, but not everyone's the same.
Could we call this the Van Gogh 128? :)
@@geekwithsocialskills or the Commodore Picasso. :)
Van Gogh wasn't that mad.
@@DerekWitt I rather like that name. Commodore Picasso sounds like a real product from the 2000s.
I love it. Why not be unique. There are tons of beige ones floating around. Why not have something different. It's a work of art now!
This is also art: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist%27s_Shit
This is great! MsMadLemon repainting an Amiga won me over to the possibilities of painting yellowed computer hardware.
I recently had a phat PS2 painted a light blue, it looks amazing. Sometimes paint jobs can look good.
I think that"s the worst thing I've ever seen. If I got a computer looking like that, I would start removing the paint right away.
I was going to write that but I felt bad typing it.
@@6581punk Yeah same here, I’m glad it’s not just me that thinks this
I'd remove my eyes but your option is better.
I’d love to see it with the yellowed keys reinstalled! I think they may set off the colours strangely enough! 😃
"My eyes! The goggles do nothing!"
I like the sort of retro/synthwave vibe from those colors, awesome paint job n.n
I have retrobrighted an Amiga1200 that was even more orange than that 128,its still quite nice today 6 years later.
Adrian just wanted to plug 2 other channels by doing this but failed.
It looks a bit like wood, I'm not really sure I love it because of the uneven-ness, but I don't hate it either. It was so yellowed, it would have been bad even after retrobriting, you could have painted it differently, but everyone is doing that, so I'm a bit glad you did something different with it. Not great, not terrible.
Might been better if design followed through on both but it doesn't. It's kinda flipped and not aligned
I like the design, unlike a lot of people in these comments, but I agree, it would look better if the disk drive and the computer matched up properly.
Right, what was she thinking. The vents are clearly made to line up.
I think that gold leaf for the case and piano black keys with ivory white lettering would look spectacular.
Controversy! That's how you know it's art.
If someone isn't a fan of the 128, this is a great way to add personalization and have something you'd be happy to have on your shelf.
In Robert A Heinlein´s novel _Stranger in a Strange Land_ one of the characters, Jubal Harshaw, says "Art is that which moves the Mind"... that is one of the best definitions of art that I have ever come across.
i think you'll see 90% of the comments rate this 'art' as god damn awful.
Shit in a can is also art.
I'm just really glad everyone is demonstrating that this piece is worthy of discussion.
But hey, if Mac Donald doesn't like it, it must not be legitimate.
@@BenState And why on God's green earth would I use angry UA-cam comments to gauge anything. The ratio here is fine. Plenty of thumbs up and people who like the concept.
If it's not for you, do it differently.
Let me put it bluntly: I didn’t like it, however as usual you are an artist producing content that is both engaging and interesting. Thanks for the video and keep up the great content!
Looked better when it was yellowed
I get not liking the paint, but no, that yellow was much worse.
Well, I must say I am quite taken by the paint job. While I definitely do appreciate a nice and clean, perfectly retrobrited case, a splash of color is nice 😊
And since it would have been a LOT of work to get this case back to bright and shiny, this is a perfectly valid alternative and one that came out pretty nice. So, a big ol’ thumbs up from me.
Getting a paint job right is hard, though. Messing it up, on the other hand, is incredibly easy.
Giving it a coat of beige paint would have been a lot less work.
@@Okurka. not a single artist would paint it beige when told to go wild, lol. Maybe that’s the kind of thing she was expecting but that’s why Adrian said go wild, to get a surprise
@@kaitlyn__L I didn't mention any artist.
Prepping the case correctly and giving it a coat of paint in the original color would have been a lot less work than retrobriting the case.
its truly horrific, artist?
I thought he said autist.
Dear Lord... but why?
that hurt my eyes, and my commodore soul.
First time ever, gonna have to say, I don't like it...
looks like painted by a 3yr old kid :( Even the badges were not painted carefully. Even the colororientation from the 1571 dont match the C128 :(
The scratches on the top just take the cake..
@@TonyHoyle well looks like Michelle did use oilcolors but this goldstripe in the mid of the 128 looks like glued a broken case together :( that's why I use spraycans for coloration :D
@@geekwithsocialskills "art"
@@geekwithsocialskills It has nothing to do with purity. Meaning no disrespect to the artist, It seems amateurish, rushed and it appears that a lot of the new "texture" is an attempt to cover failures in previous attempts at repaints.
The audio is the best yet in this video.
I seem to be in the minoroty here, but I really like the gold stripe and the gold lever on the drive. Sure, fully restored and pristine harware looks great. But we've all seen that, and he already mentioned he has a few of these. How many exist that look like this? To take something you had already written off, and turn it into a unique pice of art... I call that a win.
And it's great to see this creativity from a non-technical, artistic person, unbound by the technical constraints of how somehing "should" look - even if it's not to everyone's taste. That's exactly why it looks so different to anything most diehard geeks would consider "normal". 🙂
@@geekwithsocialskills Thanks. Saw it yesterday.
I'm guessing she may have been on LSD, no not very nice at all.
I was thinking the result of Noel's RL's paint job on his C64 is debatable. I was wrong - his C64 is the masterpiece comparing to this C128.
Looks cool.
I never owned a 64, I got the 128 when I was a kid. Never had a disk drive tho, only tape.
My 128 never was in sunlight so it still looks like new to this day.
I think cases like this should be kept as is. That chunk of cheese looked so cool. I would love to have such a yellowed Commodore. I don't mind the artful paint job, but I wish it had been done to only mildly yellowished cases.
Seeing this makes me not wanting to retrobrite my A1200 now. Hmm...
Nice, like an ocean sunset.
You needed 2 years? is it a Jan Beta tribute video? :P
No power tools were used.
Definately a unique one i would say :d If this would be mine i would spend any efforts to get rid of the paining :p
This needs to be part of an anti drug campaign....
sorry adrian I had to laugh when you put the 1571 mech in first, funny
Not to my taste at all but whatever tangles your dangle.
Nice. My only criticism would be the gold latch on the disk drive looks a bit gaudy and it seems the gold leaf on it would wear off as a frequently touched part.
How many custom chips left to recreate before we can have a c128 kit?
Like... if it were just a spray painted colour like your C64 that preserves the texture, I can hold my judgement and acknowledge the point of customisation. But that? Oh dear Gods. The texture of the computer is ruined!
276 comments, can we find one that likes the paint job? 🤣
Yes

@@BenState there is always that one guy :D j/k
Hey, I like it! I just only saw the video now! But then I didn’t have any preconceptions or expectations. I could tell it wasn’t typical styling for a machine like this, which usually goes with flat colours, but I was just like “…hm, okay”. Then the closer I looked, the more I saw fine tone and shade work, as well as appreciating the palette selection (making colours look right together is a lot more work than just picking one colour), and then the gold eject lever just felt like it capped off the warm sunset theme.
It’s certainly more expressive than most computer cases, but that’s why he said to go wild to an artist instead of asking for something in particular. I can appreciate it as its own thing, since it’s not like all C64s will be mandated to get this as a vinyl wrap or something ridiculous like that.
So I don’t judge it on the basis of “do I think C64s should look like this”, as it’s not a question of C64s plural, it’s a question of this specific one. And when it comes down to just one, there is no should, especially given the starting condition with this one.
@@kaitlyn__L If it makes him more likely to use it then it's already a success, the fact that Adrian likes the look is a bonus. It's his machine so it doesn't really matter what critics think :)
I see slightly more "thumbs down" on this video clip than expected but I guess some prefer to be totally 'purist' when it comes to the Commodore look! After a few minutes I thought "Oh that's not too bad actually" :-)
Not purist, that paintjob is trash made by an 'artist'
Does the brown look awesome? Why didn't that make it worse? Many prefer the yellowing.
@@fourdoor455 was it though? Like I said, many prefer the yellow and would consider the brown a terrible paint job.
@@fourdoor455 what im trying to get at is, what makes one a "good" paint job over another.
Might actually look good with those yellowed keys. Yellow and blue goes together
please, these computers with each passing year dwindle in numbers. Restoring them to original condition is by far the best possible thing anyone could do to them. Any paint will reduce value and give someone in the future that much more work. I'd suggest making custom cases or using new aftermarket cases to make art with.... nothing to lose.
I disagree. I think it's far more important to safe vintage computers from getting destroyed in landfills or being recycled in the first place, than it is to preserve or restore each and every one of them that does get safed to the most original state possible. You can't imagine how many C64s, C128s and so on to this day end up going to the trash. They still show up at house cleanups and auctions and people toss them because they think they're old junk. They have no clue.
On the other hand each of these computers tell their own story, they may have rarely or never even used, bought as a novelty toy but found to be of no use to the person who owend them and stayed hidden away for 35 years. Or they may have had a rough life. Or cared for by their owners while still being used extensively, modded, deliberately or undeliberately broken, or scribbled on, whatever. I don't think it would be fair to remove all traces of their past use off of them. I think we should add to them. This is all part of the heritage, these weren't collectors items, they were toys and tools and somebody's possession.
In this sense this particular C128 had its life not frozen in state or decades from its appearance shaved off of it. Instead something was added to it's story. This C128 became a gift from one person who loves retro computers and who has a wife with a passion for painting to another person who loves retrocomputers. A gift from them to Adrian. That's a pretty hefty gain in value if you ask me. That C128 got character before the paint job and it definitely has character now.
@@guffaw1711 that's the best comment I've seen in this comment section, well done sir
@@guffaw1711 You don't disagree because I don't believe destroying them in landfills is more important than saving them :)
They sure tell their own stories, I have dozens of them - all unique.. .and I agree you can preserve their history... but that doesn't mean painting over them.
Very few things are manufactured to be collector's items. Things become collector's items.
If you paint over the yellow c128, how does it add to it's history... how would you enjoy the past markings and details?
There is value in history but there is a fine line between that and just defacing & devaluing a vintage computer to add character.
More interesting history imo is how was the motherboard repaired over the years, where was it manufactured and which processes they used, how does it function and getting them repaired to new condition.
Sure we can skip the retrobright and save it's character - give it a good windex'ing and pack it away.
but personally, I like to see "trash" turned into "mint". it's so satisfying. I love seeing 40-50 year old computers looking like they just came from the store. (inside and out). I've seen my share of stinky computers but I think that novelty kinda wears out after you went though 100 of them - MOST of them are stinky... but few are mint. It's far more of an undertaking to restore vintage computers than to cover them in paint. But I don't really mind... as long as they are not damaged in the process... paint can be removed. So in closing, I agree with you, it's far better to paint them than to have them in landfills. But it's better to have them in new condition than painted :) imo.
@@ChronicKPOP I mean that’s fair, it sounds like you just have more of an engineer’s mindset about it is all. Especially with preferring to learn the history of the repairs over intuiting things from its outer appearance.
However in this case I would have to say I don’t think it detracts from or hides the history. The case was totally standard aside from the colour, which you can still kinda see through slots and vents anyway. There wasn’t any, say, carved-in text in the case which the paint might have obscured or anything like that. And now it’s gained a new and far more unique appearance. Millions of these were made and Adrian even has a bunch of other ones himself. I wouldn’t want every last one of them to be painted like this but I don’t see any harm in doing here and there, especially given this specific case of being soooo yellow.
But that’s just me.
The original color was remarkably like the new orange 24" M1 iMac. Everything old is new again?
**SMH** Seeing the ripples of the paint shows how poor the paint is on the surface. Chances are it was never sanded and primed so that paint will be peeling and fading in a couple of years.
It should have been Retrobrited.
You and others may like it, but I don't. Just a matter of opinion.
That is exactly it, it's fine to have it whatever design you like, but the paint itself just doesn't match the case in any way.
My first reaction to the paint job was fairly visceral. I even had a bit of a reaction to the black paint as well. In comparison, the black paint was alright, but like a couple other viewers mentioned, I think applying a hydro-dipped decal to the plastic would've been a better choice.
Of course, the paint may look better in person and at the end of the day if you really like it, that's all that matters
Looks really great, awesome painting skills, and it matches with the mid 80s artistic style.
No it doesn't have you ever looked at 80s art work, the 80s where all about sharp lines with bold colour contrast not blending.
Art...? Well I guess I'm getting old. Not my idea of art. Not a criticism of the artist - I just think art needs to apply to where it is. However, my opinion doesn't matter here - it's Adrian's. If he's happy that's all that matters.
seems like the cover of the disk drive has been put upside down
I think this looks amazing. With the vents at the top it looks like a vaporwave Bob Ross. At the beginning I wasn't so sure (the paint finish is so different from the smooth finish a computer is "supposed" to have) but it really grew on me.
I agree, the C128 seemed flimsy and fragile. Always was a C64 fan, but I picked up a C128 years ago for my collection and that was my impression.
The paintjob looks horrible to me. I like the idea and it sure needed a new colour, but looks like its been painted by a young child in my view. Hopefully it looks better in the flesh/plastic
Are you sure it's discolored and not specially made for some citrus grower?
I would have preferred a single metallic gradient base color, but the keys would still be a problem. But anyway, the artist saw it differently.
Those colors are incredible!
LOL that ended up way more artistic than I expected! I thought you were just going to paint it red or something. It looks so much better now, definitely worth putting on display!
Well... ughhhh... It's certainly interesting. But I wouldn't call it good.

Great content as always.
Why? The most used command on a C128 is GO64.
Art is truly subjective. To be fair, I do like the colors and design, broadly, but really only from a pretty good distance. It IS unique, and of course if you like it, that's all that matters in the end.
Painting it makes it unique.
That looks hideous. I'd rather have had it orange.
It certainly is striking, not entirely to my taste to be honest, but looks great when contrasted to the original! Its in a long tradition, of course. I remember going to shows back in the mid 80s and talking to the legendary Jeff Minter of Llamasoft and his Atari ST that was painted with stars and psychedelic patterns (he was promoting his Colourspace program at the time). After seeing that I always said I'd do the same but never quite got around to it.... :)
