I'm in the UK, so a cabin is a far off dream. But i sew my own things, enjoy leatherworking and love using my hands to make and repair like my Dad always did. Self reliance is the best feeling a man, or anyone, can have. I'd be keen to know how to make my own homestead.

Man, I am REALLY looking forward to learning more. I am a firefighter in one of the most dangerous urban areas in the country. I am set to retire in 3 years, and I want to eventually build my own log cabin. I have made a living "slinging an axe," but mostly to tear things up inside (or on top of) a burning building. Getting back to nature and building a log cabin is literally one of my biggest dreams. Thanks for starting this channel.

The easiest way to DIY build any type of home regardless of county zoning is to build the bare minimum square footage size one bedroom home, so, a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and one bedroom at roughly 600 sq ft in size. Get the house built and live in it with a goal of expanding the home If needed for a larger family. When expanding build smaller buildings connected by hallways, so a finished 3-bedroom home could be 600 sq ft + 200 sq ft bedroom two + 200 sq ft bedroom three. This allows you to live in the home sooner, and allows a safety net in case there's ever a fire where two external rooms connected by hallways might stay intact. This also allows for more privacy.

I'm so excited about this channel I can barely take it. I love how thorough you are with your videos and I love that you're gonna go from start to finish. So many guys with videos show what they are doing but dont explain how or why. Laying out the notches, roof systems and how that all ties together, angles, foundation supports etc. All of it from the bottom to the top, thats what the majority are lacking, they dont explain the technical stuff that separates a real project from a video timelapse that shows the project at different stages. Thank you for making these videos. I want to let you know that you are inspiring a lot of young folk, including myself, to make their dreams reality. My reasoning for wanting to build a log cabin is so I learn to be self sufficient. As the years come, people become more reliant on technology and society to provide for their every need, but lately I've been feeling the need to do things myself. Not only that, but I also want to reconnect with nature and experience the same feeling as the pioneers when they first came to this country. I know I can build this cabin with the support of wise people like you, huge confidence booster.

In 1981 my wife and I built a log home from a kit we bought in Oklahoma and had shipped to South Texas. Not thinking we selected the kit with round logs inside and out double tongue and groove. Everything went great until we started building partension walls inside I had to use chalk line a make 2 lines and chisel out a groove for sheet rock to fit in . If we had ordered what is called three sided logs our logs would have been flat inside and would have saved weeks off our work, made it easier to clean and dust. We sold that house in 1993 and made a great profit. But my wife said next time flat logs. Good luck

Hi Paul, this is a lovely video, I really appreciate your message, it really resonates with me. I have a different background and trade, and I'm much shorter in the tooth (one month shy of 27) but like you I am the second generation of my profession. I am a software developer in the UK, and although I never got the chance to work directly with him, I learned a lot from my late father about our craft. He passed away unexpectedly about a year and a half ago and I miss him a lot. He had a way with people, he'd always try to share the things he learned with those around him, and he instilled in me an appreciation for quality, for doing things right the first time like you say. I always assumed we'd have more time.
Like him and yourself, I also enjoy sharing the things I've learned. I've not had many opportunities to do so, but this video has helped me reflect and consider Hey, you know what, why don't I make my own opportunities?
I look forward to watching the rest of your videos, you've earned a subscription from me, and you've also inspired me to share the things I've learned. I'm not sure how it'll come out, but it will. Thanks again, stay safe.
