  • It's a process. I've gotten so busy sewing and creating, that I have neglected my work space. It's time to create an organized space that is functional, cozy and a place that I will be thrilled to retreat to. I will be on a quest to create beauty that is also extremely practical. In addition, this is where I film all my upcycling tutorials, so it needs to be aesthetically pleasing with great lighting. The theme I have chosen for the space is Posh Boutique. In this video I have a received a glitzy mirror in the mail and we will unbox it together. I will also show you the unruly mess in my current storage area...yikes, talk about bearing your flanks lol. Hope you enjoy.

    Our Dear Ms. Meyers:
    Some thoughts:
    •Using a thrifted ( of course 😊) silk scarf, first thing, make a cover for your sewing machine. It keeps dust out and will ensure that the life of your sewing machine is greatly extended by keeping it covered when not in use! Also: Pretty!
    • For your metal jewelry, I have found it to be wonderfully helpful to store silver items together, and gold items together: separately! When working on a project, we often know which color of chains, findings, etc we will need and storing them separately will save you tons of time when you are rooting through looking for what you need! Need gold stuff, go to the gold drawer. Silver stuff is in the silver drawer! This technique also works well for buttons.
    •I am a little concerned about storing the pieces you plan to work on in front of a window. They may get sun damaged before you are able to get to them and start working on them...?
    •Your new mirror, (fabulous, btw!) appears to be sitting on the power cord and that could become a fire hazard.
    •Lowes and other hardware stores have small inexpensive drawer systems with multiple clear plastic drawers for storing nails, screws, etc. They are great for storing sequins, beads, etc. You can walk right up to it and see exactly what is in each drawer without opening them. I also glue one piece of whatever it holds to the front, or label the drawer for quicker access.
    •For your ribbon situation: yikes! The only thing I can think of that will help without using up more space than you may want (such as trying to hang them-that would take up your whole workshop!), is to get in the habit of coiling them together and fastening them with a pin before putting them into a box. Perhaps also helpful, if there are a couple colors you use more frequently, such as white vs beige, (since I notice you use these colors often) is to give them each their own storage box! Then have a third for miscellaneous ribbon.
    •You have a wonderful workspace, and thank you so much for showing us around!

    I wind ALL my ribbon, off their spools, onto a small piece of cardboard, credit card size. Then I store them in plastic shoe boxes & keep the boxes on a shelf. The boxes are sorted by color. This keeps them dust free & portable. You may wish to use deeper plastic containers for bigger trims on bigger cardboard. I will put more than one ribbon on a single cardboard. This cardboard method is similar to how fabric stores keep trim.
    Ribbon Spools on a stick work best for a fast pace production line with lots of wall space to hang them. They use the ribbon too fast to collect dust.
    I even wind all my crochet thread off the spools and into balls to save on space. Plus it puts more in front of your eyes without needing to dig.

    Hi Traci! For the ribbons, maybe put the spools on a wood dowel or something long and thin enough to put the spools on and mount them on the wall, you could even use command hooks to hold up the dowels. Even the loose ribbon you could still wound on an empty spool. Just an idea! I’ve done this for stickers I have on rolls.

      Hannah, I love that idea and used it years ago, but it takes up a lot of wall space that I now don’t have. Especially if you have a lot of ribbon and trims. 💖

    • @poodlegirl55
      @poodlegirl55 10 місяців тому +1

      I used to have that but I didn't like moving many spools to get to the ones I wanted.

    • @Hannah-FleursDeMontagne
      @Hannah-FleursDeMontagne 10 місяців тому +3

      My idea was to use one long stick or dowel run across the wall horizontally for the spools. You don’t have to take the spools off the dowel to use them, just grab the ribbon and pull. The command hook wouldn’t work because it doesn’t stick far enough off the wall for the spools to fit so maybe a curtain rod bracket or something similar. Traci seems to have a lot of wall space so that may not be an issue for her.

    • @MySilverSprings
      @MySilverSprings 10 місяців тому +5

      I like that idea as well as another one I saw recently. This was a full wall piece built ladder style. With 4 - 6 inch dowels sticking out every few inches on each of the rungs. The dowels stuck out at an angle and would hold several spools of skinny ribbon or one or two wider ones. The ends of the dowels were sanded down for safety. I thought it was a great system because if you do need to pull the ribbon off you don't have to go through the entire dowel rod. I think either system is useful depending on your crafting needs.

You got me started and I love to spend my days and create new things I love your style. Without copying it, I am inspired by it because it is exactly my sensibility. Romantic and bohemian cnic Another thousand mercers. I also love your personality. If we had been neighbours, we would probably have been great friends. And we would definitely have shopped together. but I am in France in the depths of a very isolated countryside. So I visit you often in your studio and while listening to you I make my own projects. By the way, I really like your idea of curtains with placemats, I have to make some for my dining room to make a room divider and this idea would be so nice. So for now, I'm collecting the placemats

    For the ribbon/trims: wrap around H shaped cardboard pieces. Good project for long phone calls, commercials during movies/TV shows, etc. Or pay your kids to do it for you when they ask for something pricey 😂. Love your ideas and that you are not organized either. 😊. That mirror is pretty, but too small for the space. With your talent - just buy a large plain mirror and fix it to a piece of plywood and bedazzle to your hearts desire. Dollar tree or craft stores sell tons of embellishments. To go with your style, maybe put fabric and lace down first, then some sparkle. TFS.

    I love the ideas! I have a spare bedroom turned clothing closet by hanging a rod from the ceiling and all the walls have clothing hanging on short dowels glued into holes on a board that I hung around the entire room. I made my own hook pole using 1 inch thick PVC pipe with a small hole drilled into it to screw a hook. I made a wooden disc to attach to the end of each dowel that a hat could easily rest on it for my hat collection. I make restyled clothing and hats to sell at a local tea room here in NC. Lets keep a good thing going! Lavoie Boho is my label. Merry Christmas everyone.

    I too have over 900 spools of ribbon. Yes! I take cardboard pox sides and and cut all into one size. I then wrap ribbons by color , size onto cardboard , fitting several on each piece. I then store these in a file cabinet, fro thrift store and painted it my fav light pink. I can fit over two hundred into it. No actual spools, they take up too much room. Now you have organized ribbons and trims too. Take care.

    Tracy I have my laces and trims on spools, they are on shelves and are my decoration, it would be so cute in your room. I have big wooden antique spools, most of them my daughter finds at Goodwill in Florida but I sometimes find them at antique malls here in Illinois. I also use wooden sewing spools. She often finds me bags of thread. I pull on the thread and if it doesn't break I use them and if they break I take the thread off and wind trims on them. I like to cut circles of cute card stock a little bigger than the spool and glue them on each end. I also am fond of those three tier rolling carts for my trims, threads etc. You can hang hooks from them so anytime I have small amounts of ribbon on the spool I just hang it from the hooks so I see it and use it up. You can wheel them right up to the sewing machine. Curating my vintage supplies is as much my hobby as crafting with them.

    Love your mirror and your boutique vibe. Beautiful
    Managing organization is always a challenge, isn’t it? For ribbon, I am currently using two methods. Because those spools take up so much space, I made large “bobbins” out of glued double layers of Manila folders that I can stand up in shoe boxes by color. So much easier to flip through, see what I have, and takes up less space. For the ribbon shorties, I just throw them into a tub.
    Just starting to snow here, so I’ve got all winter to work on my space and create too. Hugs!

    Who wouldn't feel pretty looking in that mirror?! Beautiful! I hope we can take a tour once you're all done. As for ribbons, wooden dowels through the spools and the basket they are is both inexpensive and easy. When one spool runs out you only have to take out that one rack. For the ones not on a spool, I fold mine up and put them in a pencil box. Mine are sorted by color. Hooe it helps! Blessings to ya and on your reorganization! ♡X😊

    Thanks for sharing this! I’ve been so curious 😊. I just put my trims in one of those basket racks. Three big baskets that spin around a center pole. Holds a lot! I also have enough beads to open a store. These are in the plastic cubby bins, organized by color/type. I need to be able to see what I’ve got to work with. Now to figure out better storage for clothing. Limited space for racks. 😊

    The mirror is gorgeous! If you want it to look bigger, just put a crate or small table under it and put a hook into the wall to stabilize it. Like you, I am a visual person and having your fabrics and thrift finds on the racks is pure genius, perfect for creativity. I have lots of beads and old jewelry and created a system that works well for me. The new glass beads are sorted by color into 8x10” x1 inch high clear plastic bins with dividers and attached lids and I label each one in red markers. For the brooches, I use 3 drawer plastic bins from Walmart. I can store everything in a very small space, stacked on top of each other. Thanks again Tracy for the great video! Xox, Bonnie

I have had everything still packed and put in different boxes everywhere so the other day I just started going through them and I actually got rid of some things. I feel like it's a fresh start. I love watching your videos. Love your style so inspiring.
