Criterion keeps it real. The disc and the case. That's it. That's all you need. They outta their mind with that big "CC40" box set they're doing though.

@@BabyfaceThompson Exactly. Some of their releases (for example, _Mulholland Dr._ and _Eraserhead_ ) do include books as well, but nothing too crazy. That box set is indeed ridiculous, but it's clearly meant to be more of an 'ultra-premium' commemorative collectors' item, and all of the films included are, to my knowledge, already available individually at normal pricepoints. The one Criterion release that ever really made me raise my eyebrows was their absurdly oversized (and rather expensive) set of the Showa-Era _Godzilla_ films. I did buy it, as I'm a massive fan of the films, but I discarded the stupidly gigantic art book the discs came housed in (which wouldn't even fit on my _bookshelf,_ much less amongst my disc collection) and migrated the discs into custom-made, standard-sized Blu-Ray cases instead. Criterion's _Citizen Kane_ release was quite obnoxious as well, but I suppose that's only to be expected with _that_ particular film.

They are actually becoming the 'discount' label these days.

Yes. The prices they are charging for many of these releases are absolutely ridiculous. Kino Lorber puts out 4Ks for like $25 most times. Blu-rays are usually priced at $12-15 new. There is no reason why they should cost any more than that. The majors are just greedy and price gouging people.

      Agreed.
But I'm sure another thing that's contributed are the Joe Schmo resellers that snatch up multiple copies of certain films then sell them for much higher (which ripples into us feeling the need to snatch up limited releases faster for fear that they'll sell out on account of those resellers). Even if the reseller's venture fails, the retailers and studios and labels nonetheless see high sales numbers and high-dollar ebay listings that inflate their idea of what these things are worth to us.
That said, we can still vote with our wallet over releases as egregious as TCM and NES.

Going too far: selling a title on 4K, like the Neverending Story, at only one price point of nearly $200. Acceptable: Giving multiple price point options for a title, ranging from $20 to $200. The difference is whether you *have* to buy the super deluxe edition in order to obtain the title, or if you can just get it a standard price, too.

Back in 2012, when I ordered the Halloween II and III blu-rays, the movies were the primsry draw. Since most of those early ScreamFactory releases were the first time alot ofbthese movies hit blu-ray, the appeal of the movie was the driving force and the slip cases and free promos were secindary. These days, the companies have flipped the script on collector's and have made the supposedly "limited edition" promos and slip cases the selling point and the actual movies themselves an afterthought. It's a fool's game to fall for the FOMO marketing hook, and it'll only stop when fans stop falling for it.

  • @Mike_402-79

Simple solution. Ive already emailed umbrella about this and got a response. They said it was an interesting idea and theyd forward to their product team. I proposed when terrifier 4 comes out, offer an option with just the 4th movie and new rigid slipbox that now houses 4 movies instead of 3. Maybe add other stuff like the postera or slipcovers. But this would truly help you future proof your collections by only buying new content. Many would pay $30 for a new box to house all movies by itself. Literally allows them to print money. Also helps them because ebay no longer gets flooded with old sets under cost as people make room for the new set. Also less waste bc you aren't rebuying the same movies 5 times. When terrifier reaches part 5, a new 4k box set will be over $100 by itself. Many wont be able to justify it. Get creative. If people like my idea, i urge you to email umbrella directly.

Im a big time collector and dont buy into updgrading all my movies into 4k. An example is Shout Factory. I will live with the blu rays collector edititions even if the 4k's look great. Blu ray still looks fine even if its not restored or scanned from the original negative. There are some collectors on youtube who claim to have the money to upgrade everything as 4k and honestly i dont believe a word they say. Nobody is that rich on UA-cam to get away wirh this 4k upgrading hype. You have to set limits regardless with how much money you can spend and just learn to control the obession and impulse to be vulnerable to these marketing traps such as packaging movies into limited edition boxsets and stuff. I do think that some of these companies have gone too far, but at the end of the day, they want to make money. If someone wants to pay a $100 plus for a bunch of extras, then so be it. In most cases we can still get just the movie. The one company that is making me angry is Severin. Not only are they coming up with bundles with 2 movies and a bunch of stuff for over $200, they are starting to gouge us on their standard 4K releases. $45 for Rats, or Hell of the Living Dead is crazy. Sure, it comes with a blu and soundtrack, but it still feels like a premium price to me. I guess the one good thing is that they always end up discounting their releases later, as they rarely sell out.

You got me to realize sometimes buying the DVD is good enough. Besides any Art the Clown boxset is INCOMPLETE if it doesn't have All Hallow's Eve in it and I want a new release of All Hallow's Eve. Steelbooks are nice, blu-rays are nice, but for some reason, and especially if there is artwork different for it, the regular DVD is all I really need. Like with Ash vs. the Evil Dead, Starz made special artwork for anyone who bought the individual regular DVD sets. And if you look closely, DVD slipcovers have the whole image of the artwork. A lot of the blurays and 4K's slipcovers are cropped differently and frequently one side of the artwork you are meant to see is cut off due to the lack of space.

This has been going on in the music world for almost 20 years, if not longer. First time I really noticed it is when AC/DC put out the Backtracks boxset. The standard version was about $30 for 2 cds and a dvd. The deluxe version was about $200 for 3 cds and 2 dvds housed in cheap albeit working guitar amp. Fine if you want that, but if you only wanted the music you were being forced to buy something you didn't want to get it.
G'NR took the cake with their Appetite sets. Album only, 2 disc with just highlights of demos, a super deluxe for $200, and a Loaded set for $1000. The only difference musicly between the $200 and $1000 set was one hidden cassette. The rest was a bunch of cheap collectables to inflate the costs.
It used to be about the music. And films used to be about the films.

I kind of have to point the finger at Vinegar Syndrome for this. They live and breath off "limited edition" with packaging that causes collectors to sell their kidneys in order to obtain it (likely for a movie they've never even seen). Then Umbrella and Severin started one upping them by coming out with crazy elaborate and unique bundles with toys/merch etc etc that was specific to the movie BUT they always have a regular option available. Then Imprint comes along with this Neverending Story boxset and puts the most ridiculous price tag on it (I'm in Australia and I don't even want to pay that sort of money for a movie, without considering shipping and conversion rates which I usually have to consider when buying from the US). I'm sure they will release a standard edition of it - but the fact they haven't either announced it or released it at the same time is what's concerning. I feel they would actually sell more copies if they had both options announced at the same time. I'm afraid that physical media is becoming a niche market. Some companies are over-pricing their releases, thinking that only collectors will buy.

On the face of pricey releases, usually you can find reasonably priced alternatives, e.g. Neverending Story in 4k: a very good release has been available in Germany since 2021; Amazon De sells it today at $ 20 apiece.
In the case of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre there is a plethora of 4K releases of all kinds (amaray case, steelbooks, mediabooks, collector editions of different types) across a. broad price spectrum. And so forth
We are very lucky today: enormous diversity on offer: for all tastes & budgets. Cheer up & count you blessings!

to answer your question about the neverending story, yes, the only way to have the US version is through imprints massive and costly limited edition. the only other option is a german version that has removed some music, if i recall its the famous song from the movie that gets removed, and some longer\additional scenes that kinda change the tone of the film (ive heard, never seen it).
So if you want the version "you" grew up with, you gotta pay. at least this doesnt seem like cheap crap, ala the TCM cardboard chainsaw stuff, its a real production value item. though i admit i would be more than happy to just buy a standard version.

It started this year when Disney put out Inside Out 2 on 4k steelbook and was asking $45 bucks and then the DVW for $66 and now Willow on 4k steelbook at $66 but went down to $55. I can get Inside Out 2 on bluray for my stepdaughter and DVW is $30 for the 4k standard and my Willow bluray is fine as im not overpaying for a movie ill watch once every 3 years
Shit has got crazy on pricing and the more that participate, the higher prices they are gonna ask bc they see people are buying and possibly selling out stock

Only because of the excitement not because I’m a cheapskate lol .. interesting topic/video! 👍🔥

When I re-entered the PM market, I said I wouldn't pay more than $10 for a 4K. Then Robocop 4K came out. I said okay just this once. Hah! Yeah, they've gone too far, and so have I. $25-30 is my upper limit on the vast majority of studio releases, and usually I'm content waiting for sales. But...Why the f'n hell do I have VSUs of Congo, Navy Seals, and Showgirls? None of those should even be VSUs, imo, but I did want more than just the standard case since the option was available.

The idea of producing more box sets after a studio cranks out another sequel has always bugged me. I'm one of those people who loathes waste so this means with every sequel and box set, that's more excessive unsold product somewhere. If they were being recycled somehow that wouldn't be much of a concern. The _Fast and the Furious_ "saga" is probably the biggest offender. With ten features (so far) and discounting any spin-offs, there are so many releases with movies 1 through 6, 1 through 8, and so on in various packaging. Who's buying those?
... well, realistically, anyone who has a personal distaste for how campy the movies became after the third installment. Some fans say after 5 there's no point, but they're a minority. The bottom line is, much like the _Terrifier_ set, we have a good idea more sequels leads to additional unsold sets in the future.
FOMO is a real thing and have awkwardly witnessed it in person many times. A guy I know saw _The Iron Giant_ on display at Barnes and Noble. It was.... $50? and despite not having money he wanted it. His fiancé reminded him of that. I offered to clone my copy and give it to him no charge. He was dead set on that box set for the little figurine alone. Some people, I tell ya.

The most expensive sets I have bought were the Arrow Hellraiser Torment and Bruce Lee LE Blu Ray sets and had FOMO. I like those two a lot and was worth getting them. I am happy not bothering with the really expansive sets. Too many have Tat that is a waste of money. I am starting to think even the common inclusion of postcards is a waste.

I kind of view these things as them killing two birds with one stone. The same market that is buying box set 4ks is the group that also buys props and collectibles, so why not lump them together.
As long as they also have a version without the extras for people that just want the movie, it makes sense to me. If they weren't and they were gatekeeping it by only releasing the $2-300 version that'd be different.

The steelbooks are an easy explain. Two reasons actually. Sony took over disneys physical media production so now the profits are split between two companies the mouse isnt going to step in its own trap. Two once the tarrifs on mexico go through all the disks produced over here come from them so now your going to be looking at a couple of extra dollars on everything.

Overpricing trash like Wolverine steelbooks (kiddie stuff) sends a message that casual fans may as well stick with their crappy streaming services, while refined
gentlemen with expendable income are welcome to invest their hard-earned cash into the finest presentations of cinematic works available.
In other words, physical media has grown up. And it's about damned time!

Good vid. Not seen any others of yours before but like how you say f’ing instead of the full word 😂
On the topic - I along with surely most others agree it’s got too much. I will say I’ve never been interested in the massive novel/gimmick extras that’s literally gonna be cheap plastic tat (like that chainsaw etc.). I don’t get the appeal of that stuff at all. What I do appreciate though are booklets with BTS photography and well considered and exclusive essays either on the film it’s self or the production of it that add some insight and value that you will not be able to get anywhere else. And what I also like are slip covers, slip boxes, slip cases etc because with how thin and spindly and cheap the plastic blu ray cases have now gotten in the attempt to cut down on plastic (well intentioned ofc) the physical item of a naked case now feels too cheap and delicate and for films you love or really like (most of the kind i buy tbh) it’s not an adequate physical representation of the value of the film within. But again what I don’t like is the limiting edition of this stuff to the extent it sells out quick and is subject to scalpers. I also don’t care about posters and ‘lobby cards’ - they’re fine but they never have been and never will never be an aspect of a release that has sold me on a release, and I doubt they ever have for anyone else. What I absolutely *am* a big sucker for however are larger format (or really any format inc. A5-ish that fit within a slip box) books that a produced for some limited edition anime releases - I love old school anime so love the ‘80s - mid ‘90s character designs, so getting a big book full of character design reference sheets, background art, story boards, genga, mech and vehicle sheets etc etc., especially when it’s material that was previously only available in Japanese publications that’s now been translated for us English speakers, that sh*t gives me a boner and will pay the often what should be considered rip-off prices for these sets (Nadia secret of the Water was £150, Macross Plus (a single f*cking movie with a 4 ep OVA version!) was £120, and the Evangelion Ultimate edition was £300 on release but just this week got it for £170 where they must have found a box of them in a warehouse or something and put them back up for sale as part of Black Friday/Christmas sales). I can’t say no to that sh*t smh, thank f*ck I don’t like anime produced after 2000 because if I did there’s no way I’d be able to get all the equivalent sets of those (idk if those newer shows and movies have those big art books or not tbf)
