  • New Orleans and surrounding areas lost power when Hurricane Ida hit on Aug. 29 and may not get all of it back for weeks. Entergy has been on thin ice for a while, with growing concerns that they are not properly maintaining their systems to withstand natural disasters. Read more: wapo.st/3zzfYXA. I would have thought that after Hurricane Katrina, overhead power lines would have been moved underground during the mass rebuilding. Some times people never learn from mistakes.

I recognize underground transmission line and distribution line are safer than poles from flood, storm and hurricane but construction and maintenance cost are more expensive.
In Korea, electricity industry is publicized so undergronding of transmission line and distribution line in urban area by subsidized to KEPCO, Korean Electricty Company from government and local autonomous entity.
But United States' electricity industry is privatized so undergrounding project might raise up the high rate of electric charge to home and businesses.

High tension of that kind it is not efficent to put underground.
They need multiple crossings over the river and maintain the transmission towers. What I saw were covered in rust & corrosion.

@@jontelmurphy5996 sure it is! Done all over the world! Underground lines can be installed in dedicated public thoroughfares with dense population, and don't require right-of-way acquisition. Since land acquisition can be a major cost for transmission projects, underground lines are often more economical.
