- AJ McLean and his wife, Rochelle, explain why their 9-year-old daughter requested to change her name from Ava to Elliot. In a post to her Instagram story, Rochelle goes into how the decision came to be while also clarifying it's 'not a gender thing.'

At first I was going to be judgmental. Then I thought who am I to say what is right or wrong about someone else’s life. I think it’s sweet that the parents have a bond with their kids like that. Father daughter relationships are so important. Way to go!

I think it’s a great idea because it shows a child’s identity as there own. I told my kids also if you don’t like your name or want something different then; do it.
Also it’s doesn’t show a sign of disrespect of the parent, but it’s a name that you will have for the rest of your life and if you don’t like it or uncomfortable with it or even want something different, then you should be able to make the name change

Normal thing when a kid or teen wants a different name. So many people think it's a sign of gender confusion or something which is wrong! I remember having everyone call me by my middle name (Tamara, because I thought Dawn was boring)..and luckily it didn't stick. Everyone wants to feel unique.

True! It seems like some of today's parents are trying to avoid the old school way of dropping your kids or disowning them when they came out or were different in some way . So they are doing it while they are kids to avoid any issues. I guess I get it to an extent but I guess I agree with letting them at least reach their late teens first. If my child came to me saying they were whatever I'd want them to know I love them and it's their life to live not mine which was the issue parents of the past didn't grasp. To me also it seems with celebrities and some regular people it's more of a "look at me I'm open minded" thing or else why not keep it private . How does wanting to be called something other than what you were named at birth have anything to do with who is in control? That's like saying you can not uses your middle name instead of your first name.
Life is hard as it is. Most people’s life is full of stress and anxiety. That being said, what harm is it to allow your kid to change their name to whatever they please? Life is too short and too stressful to not do something that makes you happy 🤷🏾♀️

If I’m being perfectly honest I think kids around her age already having a “preferred pronoun” is a lot stranger than having a random nickname of sorts. She could easily change it in a few months or something and in 10 years if she decides to legally change it, she’s free to do so then. Her sister has a much more unique name than Ava or Elliott but that’s pretty common amongst celebrities already - to give their kids unique and weird names. Elliott seems like a somewhat common name though. Like her mother stated, it’s not a gender thing. Yes, there are kids that identify as transgender and go through that process but I don’t think that’s the case here.

As parents you have to guide them back on the right roads. This is one example. Changing their name is one thing. Trying to change their gender (surgery mainly) when they are not even old enough to know or comprehend how their body parts even work yet is literal child abuse and sick! AJ still calls her his daughter so I hope it stays that way.

Ava is more unique than Elliott..😹 I think the older is just jealous that Lyric has such a unique name. It's funny I actually had Lyric on my name list for a boy and Lyrica on my name list for a girl.
