No, those only deploy automatically in a case if depressurization. I'm not sure if the pilots have the ability to drop them, but even if they did, they're most worried about getting the plane down safely. People in the back can be treated, but not if the plane crashes.
There was no danger here. The engine was providing bleed air when it got struck. Then, the smoke got in via the air ducts from the bleed. It would be closed immediately and the system would use the second engine for bleed air, meaning the smoke would clear up near instantly. No cause for panic.
Pilot here yes bird strikes happen however it may be comforting to know that bigger planes produce more thrust then needed in the event of an engine failure the plane will be okay however it is still an emergency unless stated otherwise usually the PIC will make the call to tower
@@matthewkashnig3061yea its just because of the bleed air from the broken engine. they can redirect the air to start coming from the other engine and the smoke will clear out.
There always has to be an overdramatic person or two to makes things worse. I understand it's a scary situation but letting out an eardrum shattering scream helps no one. Nor does yelling and running around. It just makes things a lot worse.
Sounds like a child probably reacting to their own family’s horror. We have no idea what kind of trauma they may have already been through. Try to be considerate that not everyone can control their reactions in an emergency especially children who haven’t learned better yet.
It’s crazy how it’s 2024 and airlines still split families apart in the cabin. Everybody was calm until the girl began to scream to her parents while sitting next to a stranger. A man possibly her dad just by the urgency in his voice Yells out to the guy demanding him to have consideration for her when the mother then chimes in, right after and begs with the stranger as well him to please protect her daughter, that’s what stands out for those of us who understand Spanish. A smoke filled cabin normally wouldn’t cause a Young girl to suddenly scream like that. The man Yelling “Gentelman, do You mind???. Have some compassion for the girl!!!” is what that roughly translates to. The header only says “passengers begin to scream” and so well there a reason why, it wasn’t so much the smoke filled cabin alone, it was parents and possibly others demanding assistance for the girl. One lady does ask for the mask to come down at the beginning as well
The passengers need to stop yelling and causing Chaos. Getting frightened won’t do shit than just make your heart beat faster. Chill let the pilots handle it

There are a couple of Spanish speakers in the comments; I actually know Spanish and the man who was telling those who are screaming to "everyone, everyone, stop messing around"
I’m a Flight Attendant. The masks are not for smoke. The masks are for a decompression. For example, let’s say a hole busts open part of inside the airplane or the airplane window cracks or even a tiny air leak from the outside gets in. This is dangerous because the inside oxygen on the airplane cabin will slowly leak out. That is what causes the masks to come out. This is because the outside air is at such a height you can’t breath it and you’ll pass out in 15seconds if you don’t have or put on your oxygen mask. This is why we tell you to put your mask on before even your kids because if you pass out who’s going to put it on your kids face. The oxygen on the plane is potentially circulated so the smoke could potentially contaminate your airways because it’s not for smoke at all. The pilots are trained to get on the ground as quickly and safely as possible so us Flight Attendants can give you SPECIFIC instructions on how to safely evacuate the plane in less than 90 seconds. We will tell you to leave your bags so you don’t trip or trip others and get people stuck in the fiery airplane. This is why listening to the Flight Attendants is so important and not only during a safety demo but when we tell you to do things like push your bags under the seat for takeoff and landing. We’re not waiters but safety experts who happen to provide you with snacks and drinks as a courtesy. Remember that.
@Reeluniquechannel that was such good information you provided. I never realized that about lack of oxygen at high heights. Your reply is out of sight down here, you should copy and paste it under the main post.

Shouldn't there be oxygen masks falling down "automatically" in this case?

The problem is that the smoke didn't clear.
Well I agree that panicking wouldn’t help, it is cause for concern. Even the existence of so much smoke with no clean air is cause for concern.
thanks for the explanation, it would really be reassuring in that situation as your choking on smoke flying through the air. ffs.
