    Great video Davide, very helpful. After watching the related video 2 days ago I was lying in bed that night thinking about how I would go about making these jigs. What I came up with was similar to the way you make your jigs but I think yours are an improvement on what I had in mind. Now you have provided this video I don’t need to think any more. I will get to sleep quicker tonight :) Thanks.

      Making these small fixtures to make work easier is always a lot of fun because there is no stress of making mistakes. If they don't work, make another one, it's just wood scraps so there's no risk of insomnia...😄
      So have a good night and sweet dreams😊

    Hi Davide - [I live near Rotterdam/The Netherlands] - Using your video's I built my first violin (so far - still to be varnished). I missed out 2 video's: 1) what should I do after glueing the neck to the body? E.g. finishing the heel etc.. And 2) Finishing the soundpost e.g. how to achieve the right length, angle and inserting the soundpost. It may be in some of your video's but so far nothing found.

      You can find two videos showing what to do after gluing the neck, i.e. finishing the heel and the button:
      ua-cam.com/video/stNdHlZz-uk/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/CxrdbISPf40/v-deo.html
      I haven't done the ones on cutting and inserting the soundpost yet, but they will be the next I will do. If you subscribed to my channel and activated the notification bell, alerts will come to you as soon as I post them.
      In case you don't already know, you can find the complete index of my videos in order of construction phase and grouped by topics on my site at this link: davidesora.altervista.org/videos/
      This video shows how to use it: ua-cam.com/video/hadIStJtKps/v-deo.html

    Hi Maestro, I have a slightly different question. When making oil varnish, can you use colophany (pine and conifer resin) for the resin component instead of amber or mastic? (I cannot buy violin varnish anywhere in Australia, so am trying to make an oil varnish for my first violin. )

    • @DavideSora
      @DavideSora  2 роки тому +1

      The colophony is a resin widely used for violin varnish, especially by those who want to obtain a varnish with characteristics of fragility/chippiness similar to those of the ancient luthiers. In fact, scientific analyzes almost always find varnishes based on colophony/linseed oil on Stradivari's violins. However, it is not known how it was treated and what type of colophony it was (there are many depending on the trees of origin) and the quality and treatment of the resin can make a lot of difference. To be used for varnish it is a common opinion that it's not good as it is, it should be subjected to cooking to evaporate the volatile elements that make it sticky and to harden it, some treat it also with lime for this reason. Even all industrial paints up to the early 1900s before WW2 were oil and rosin-based, before the advent of synthetic resins.
      If you have the necessary knowledge you might be able to make a good varnish, if you don't have it the safest choice would be to rely on specific commercial products for lutherie, it seems strange to me that they cannot ship to Australia, but I don't know. Have you tried these? www.oldwood1700.com/en/

      @@DavideSora Thank you for a quick and detailed reply! Yes, I have looked at buying Oldwood and Hammerl varnishes for my violin but their import prices are very high and even then there is uncertainty whether Australian customs would allow them in (flammable goods).
      In such a case for a first violin, I may just experiment for a while with cleaning linseed oil and perhaps using shellac or mastic as a resin instead (those I can easily get in Australia, but a little more expensive than colophany).

    • @DavideSora
      @DavideSora  2 роки тому +1

      @@Smathles Mastic alone is a little too soft to make varnish, shellac is good but it is not soluble with oil, the only way to use it together with oil is to make a Linoxin varnish like the one I use, which use alcohol as a solvent. But it is a rather long process. If you want to try colophony you have to cook it, you can find a lot of information on cooking on Maestronet forum, by doing a google search with "cooking colophony site Maestronet". For example this thread is quite interesting, but there are many others:

      @@DavideSora Thank you once again! I will be doing lots of research before I start I think... There's a lot to consider with varnish making :)
