I think it is because they were much cheaper than the archtops when they were first released and so gained a boon with players of the country and later rock and roll scenes of the '50s, later Fender had to compete with Japanese copies and in the last decade imports from allover Asia. So they have to have models in most price brackets to compete, some of these were not so good to start with but neither were most of the recent Asian imports, however, the asian guitar companies have upped their game significantly. Fender has had to come up with something better, they haven't always achieved this though. Im a Telecaster guy, although Im a traditionalist, it has to be an ashtray bridge and I use the ashtray cover unless I am palm muting, I love the Fender Japan stuff but it costs a fortune to ship and insure it here in the UK and that's if you can get someone to ship it, it has to be done on the quiet.
I remember here in the UK, Guitarist magazine used to run a directory of Fender guitars that was quite a few pages long with pics and close print. It almost seemed they included every guitar that rolled off the production line that month. It was truly an homage to the people who had to come up with a name for every type, lol. I love Teles, the shovel of the guitar world.

I own a 2012 American Special Tele (identical to the first one displayed here) with the aforementioned Texas Special pickups that i bought brand new in 2012, and you are 100% correct, these sound incredible!! It is a VERY solid guitar, it’s been my main guitar since, i have played live with it a fair amount and more often than not when someone hears how it sounds, i get asked what pickups are in there. GREAT guitar for the price, got mine for 1200$ CAD and it’s well worth it.
Bought a MM Tele about twenty yrs ago at GC. It was maybe 399? Special edition something…picked it up and thumped it. It had good resonance so I got it. Spent time adjusting it, new noiseless PUPs, and new electronics. That took years as I tried to make it better. Drum roll… It is now a really nice playing and sounding guitar! Light and sparky. Since it was so cheap, I felt ok trying to mod it. Glad I did.
Great presentation! I owned a 1974 Tele Custom, it had the CuNiFe magnet wide range pickup in the neck. I found this PU was on the bassy side, more for jazz, but it blended nicely in the middle position with the separate volume and tone knobs adjusted. I never had an issue like this with my LP, but for some reason I kept hitting the PU selector switch when strumming. I sold it way too cheap mainly because the previous owner filed down the frets on the e and b strings. Somehow that mod is supposed to help when playing pedal steel licks, which is what the original owner told me. I have no idea why as it seemed to make it harder for me to play those types of licks. I appreciate all the work you and your team does putting together these videos, but I have to say this particular presentation obviously required a lot of research and contains some valuable knowledge people can use to reference for years to come (or as long as it stays up, hopefully for years) when compiling info when searching for a Tele. Of course, your prior videos offer a lot of valuable knowledge was well, but this is focused on just one type. Maybe next a Stat video? I know that is one big rabbit hole to go down for sure!
One great Mexican model you missed is the ‘50s Baja Telecaster. It got rolled into the classic player line, but lost the swamp ash body at that time. Great for someone who can’t afford a AVRI. I also have an ‘52 AVRI and 1985 Japanese ‘52 reissue. The quality control is as good.
@@BryanClark-gk6ie agreed. Mine was a little over $500 brand new, 20% off sale. Now I see them going for over $1,000 in excellent condition. I wanted it because I thought it looked almost identical to a ‘52 reissue. Then I found my ‘52 reissue for $500 at a pawn shop a few months later. Got it cheap because it had a broken nut. Easy fix, I just made new one out of bone.
Really enjoy your channel, I had an American Special Tele and an American Professional Tele, good guitars but I recently sold them and got a Tom Anderson T-Icon, wow what a good guitar. I live about 8 miles west of the Asheville, N.C. airport, it is a mess up here. Thanks again for the videos.

Wow! I agree with most you said. Especially about the American and Japanese Telecasters. Fender Mexico has gone downhill so much of late that I wouldn’t ever consider one of those! Their quality control is atrocious. Thanks for the wonderful video.
Never been a tele guy and always played Strat over 40 years. Now out of no where I now own a Fender Player plus tele, 40th anniversary Squier with custom hardware upgrade and a Japanese tele style tele shape with 3 pickups made by Vola. Must be an age thing and now I am eyeing a Fender Ultra tele with Texas Tea finish.

If you like modern specs, the now-discontinued Squier Standard Series was just as good as any MIM in many players' estimation. I particularly like them for modding because they have 22 frets, full thickness bodies, and alnico pickups stock for sub-$150 on the used market, but damn are the Telecasters getting rare -- people get a hold of them, customize them to their taste for cheap, and never let go!
