Do you make use of different difficulty settings?

Yeah I do. I haven’t played a game with “difficulty settings” in a while. I’ve been playing a lot of Minecraft lately.

I do on some games like Star Craft. But I mostly play World of Warcraft. I am Autistic and I have Occipital & Trigeminal Neuralgia and joint issues. I have a hard time with tracking, depth, lights and movement in games. Thankfully Blizzard is adding more accessibility features and there are many amazing folks making add ons and weak auras that have helped.

I definitely put anything I can on the easiest settings. I like to actually enjoy the games and not get frustrated with it because I keep dying. And a lot of the times it helps me have a better reaction time when I'm being shot at or something like in Halo Infinite.

Thanks for the video, I became blind later in life and my first game after losing most of my vision was Splatoon and I’m happy to hear there is a second version and it can be played by a blind person.

Great video as usual, James. Are there actually games with blind or visually impaired protagonists? It would probably help sighted people understand what less sighted people go through if they had to play, say, an adventure or even a spooky game, when they can barely see anything and have to rely on audio clues instead. Such a game would be accessible for all sorts of sighted and legally and fully blind players, and everybody would have practically equal chances at succeeding.

so cool to hear about your insight! I still get sheepish about the kind of accessibility I need but can't find in games, so knowing that AAA has been making improvements for it is so empowering.

Great video! I have colour blindness and I've noticed many games now feature colour blind options which I'm thankful for. It's usually the first thing I check for when I boot up a new game.

Do you have any advice for a totally blind person wanting to play video games. I play Text adventure games a lot. Time crest is one of my favorites! It is the closest Text adventure game that is to a video game. It has sound effects and music. I remember attempting to play Mario party when I was a kid. It was simple enough and I did relatively well with help from my brother and family members

I really appreciate all the details Nintendo puts into their games that I've played so far. There's a lot of audio cues to different events. I've had a Switch hooked up to my 40 inch monitor since March 2020 and have been able to enjoy Let's Go, Pikachu!, Mario Odyssey, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons on it. Also some other games like Cooking Simulator and Fuser, but those less so because the learning curve is kind of steep on them relative to A C. I don't bother reading a lot of on screen text because it hurts pretty quickly for me.
I tried out Steam last winter because I thought with my PC's accessibility settings, I might be able to make it work. However, all the Steam settings overrode everything and I couldn't play a single game I tried. They were very quick to refund my subscroption once I let them know what my issue was.

i'm legally blind without glasses, my vision without glasses is very similar to your vision! with glasses i still have a lot of struggles, like no depth perception or peripheral vision, nystagmus, and my bifocals do a LOT of the leg work when it comes to gaming. if i play my switch in public, my mask throws off my vision and makes games way harder to see!
funnily enough, my main struggle with games is the fact that my dexterity is poor. eye fatigue can be enough to put down a game, but it's not nearly as prevalent of a problem as needing quick reaction times and precise movements. For example, I've been playing Breath of the Wild and i struggle with close combat because a main mechanic, the flurry rush, needs me to flick the joystick at a very precise time. but when i got Age of Calamity (a spin-off of the BOTW story), there's a dedicated dodge button and i achieve flurry rushes more often! it's a button-mashing game in general, and i put its difficulty on easy so i can just hack and slash to my heart's content. some of the timed missions are unobtainable though, so the game could certainly use some better accessibility features overall.
for my specific disabilities though, the game i sing praises for with its difficulty options is Hades. there's a God Mode which makes you take less damage every time you die, and it caps at 80% damage resistance. this is enough for me to fully enjoy the game without it being too easy. the pact of punishment is a robust system that gives several options to gear each run to the way i want. i can add more enemies, i can make them faster, i can make them deal more damage, lots of stuff like that! but i also don't have to do any of that if i don't want to. i can gear the exact kind of challenge i want, instead of being forced to take on something i cannot physically accomplish with my limitations. i've been over 300 hours into Hades and i feel so free to play exactly how i want without being forced or punished for choosing easy options (like many games do).

note on the mario games, honestly it seems like everyone has issues with depth perception in mario games lol. I myself have good vision and good depth perception normally, but in both mario odyssey and the new 3d world, I just can't work out the depth at *all*. I constantly miss jumps and all sorts.

how do you make the visual effect that shows how you see things? I have something similar but it's optic nerve damage and I can't really show people what I see so much. I have nystagmus and maybe not quite as much blur I have about 30% of a normal person's vision and because of the nerve damage I can't see things off to the side so good either.
