Walking THE HOGSMILL RIVER (Part One)

- I’m taking a Sunday Walk along part of The Hogsmill River in Surrey. Starting from its source in Ewell, the River is a Chalk Stream Tributary that flows into the River Thames at Kingston. The River used to be a hive of Industrial activity with many Mills along the Route (including Gunpowder Mills) until 1875 when they couldn’t meet new Safety Legislations. Join me for a rather muddy Stroll along the first part of the River rounded off with a Sunday Roast at The Spring Tavern.

look forward to part 2 , from Tolworth to Kingston.
Yes Steve, it will be Tolworth to Kingston.
I like your historical research.
The hogsmill river throws up some amazing facts along the way plus can see wonderful places
Indeed it does.
May I give your beard a Thumbs Up, Marq?!
Does anyone remember back in the early 50s , there was a concreted "narrow" fenced with high railings in which the flow of water was monitored just West of the railway bridge/tunnel ( between Station Ave. & Meadow Walk ). In the height of Summer local kids would form a dam of branches and meadow cuttings thereby creating a sizeable lake in which one was able to paddle or even swim . Within a few days the council would remove the dam where upon re-constrution became necessary . Happy days !
Greetings from Arkansas. I am a big fan from the US. I really enjoy the content you provide. It inspires me to get out and explore footpaths in my area. Keep up the fantastic work.
Thank you very much Gino, it's much appreciated and Big Love to Arkansas!
I used to work at The Upper Mill decades ago. In the olden days Oliver Reed used to own it (there's a knowledge bomb for you).
Thanks Marq, I walk about 4k with my dog most days alone the Hogsmill and cross the stepping stones up to Ruxley lane. Look forward to part 2.
Thanks Danny.
Please come to Kingston. 2000 years of history. Much more than just a university town
It's just down the road from me and I will.
I like that you use the same pieces of music in your videos, they are part of your video's identity, and lovely to see some familiar places. The Holman Hunt reference was a new one to me. I know of the Millais location for his painting of 'Ophelia' in Ewell. In the future people will be saying, '..and this is the pub where Marq English ended his walk with a pub lunch!' It looked a good one.
I hadn't heard of 'The Holman Hunt' Painting until I was researching the River. Also these Pubs need a Plaque saying I once Dined there ha,ha
Great video. Yes as noted the first mill building was Oliver Reed's home. He also went to Ewell Castle School. The track along the Hogsmill is rather precarious in winter but really is wonderful in dry summer months when mud has disappeared. The bridge goes under the train line and has a historic plaque on display. Shame you didn't show Ewell Court, you were so close to it when you were at the stepping stones. That's a cool spot with a pack horse bridge, streams, and house with small grotto (and live fairies in it). An explosion in that area where the gun powder mills were caused what people in London thought was an earthquake! Looking forward to the next installment.
Ollie Reed seems to get everywhere in Surrey! We did film at The Pack Horse Bridge back in 2012 when shooting my Movie RAVENSWOOD.
Lovely walk, Marq - I had no idea that this river even existed. I hope you were able to clean your shoes!
Interesting mix of natural stream and culverted stretches. I have been on a bird watching walk today and just as you mentioned birdsong I identified the call of the great tit!
Hello Marq. If that was March this year, then you were lucky to find a dry day. Interesting to see the remains of some of the many mills along the way. If I walked as fast as you, I would get very warm too. Sunday lunch looked good.
I've always been a fast walker unless the Mud prevents it.
@@MarqEnglish Yes. This has been mentioned before! Ha,ha.
If you like wearing shorts on chilly days, you need a pair of culottes like Vobes wears. They are so funny looking I laugh inside everytime he wears them.
