    I love this clip. Carson's true comedic genius shows. He could have really gone over the top with his reactions, but Carson was smarter than that. He knew all it takes is a little acknowledgement of Ed's behavior, and the laughs will follow. I miss Johnny.

      That is a really good observation. Today's talk show hosts would have laughed their heads off or try to "edit" it off later. All Johnny did was a few quick looks to the audience.

    The epitome of friendship and comedy. This clip is a treasure and can only happen if both people know each other very well, like each other, and have the timing to make it sizzle, especially Johnny, his timing is perfect here but so is his kindness as he captures the comedy but not at the expense of his friends dignity.

      Alan Stewart --- I think so too. Ed's job was to have Johnny's back, but never compete with him. By all accounts he executed his role brilliantly. That particular night, with the help of some liquid encouragement, Ed challenged Johnny and proved him wrong. I like to think that Johnny gave Ed a pass "just this once" due to his state of inebriation, but the truth is that Ed was probably called on the carpet later for his transgression. Johnny was a notorious control freak who allowed nothing to interfere with his status as the show's centerpiece. It could be argued that Johnny's ego was largely responsible for the show's mammoth success, which explains why his legions of fans don't really care that in private he was an asshole who treated people shoddily.

    I'd much prefer to watch reruns of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson than anything that's on primetime today. This is golden television. Another great Ed McMahon moment was when he was taking a Friday off, and while Johnny protested, Ed says to Johnny "I'm entitled to a day off, you certainly invented it" I was born too late ('73) and missed all these great television moments, so I thank UA-cam for allowing me to watch what I missed growing up. It's just a damn shame that greedy Hollywood is trying to take the joy away from us by demanding so many videos be removed

    • @catholicpriest1
      @catholicpriest1 10 років тому +9

      It's not some greedy "Hollywood". It's the Carson estate that owns the tapes and they have the right to do with them as they please. I am thankful that they have gone to the considerable expense of preserving these precious programs and then digitally remastering them so that we can see them. And then we should expect to see them for free? We live in an entitlement society.

Besides, I never really liked Colbert's schtick when he was at Comedy Central. He promised to "be himself" after he took over from Letterman, but after watching the show a couple of times I noticed that, apparently by habit, he slipped back into his "old" persona. He's just not my cup of tea.

    Carson, with his perfectly timed furtive glances toward the camera, shows why he is a legend, and why his use of repressed tones of subtle disapproval and perfect timing to produce comedic effect, will never be matched. People assume that McMahon was only along for the ride in these segments due to the effect of the special elixir in his coffee mug, but he was a comedy genius in his own right. He knew PRECISELY what he was doing, and saying, and was utilizing perfect "straight man" timing as well. McMahon was like a master pianist subtly and inconspicuously backing up a virtuoso violinist. Both Carson, and McMahon were comedians of the highest order.

And he had his own very distinct personality. Een though I don't care for Letterman, I can see that he put his own stamp on the show. It was more intelligent and spontaneous than the stuff put out today.

    Instead of watching in my room, I happened to be in the living room with mom. I was clueless, mom said, "Ed is a bit tippy". I was convinced this was all rehearsed and written before the show, but she insisted it was all off-the-cuff.
