  • We have looked at TONS of stoves here on the channel, and I have tended to really like stoves from the company Primus. They are well made and tend to perform very well. The Spider 2 caught my eye, so was it worth the money?

    Please don’t do the music montage again in the boil test. I’ve been following you for years and really Enjoy the organic sounds of the stoves running while the test is operating. The reason why I watch these episodes of stoves is to actually see, watch, and hear the stoves running. I appreciate everything you do Ernie for such a small selective group on UA-cam to follow. Please don’t take this negatively I’m simply trying to be constructive. Thank you for your time.

    Hmmmm, Very Tempting Stove. You're right, the little heat exchanger technology does make a noticeable difference. Like Shark Marles said, the multi fuel kit would be interesting to check out.

    The heat exchanger is a higher efficient type but they do have drawbacks. They suck so much heat out of the gasses that incomplete combustion happens. So only use the heat exchanger pots outdoors and not in a tent as it will make CO gas.

    Thanks for the comeback and the all the content you have made already!
    Spider Express is not only designed to use pots with radiators underneath. Its burner was used as a core of Primus ETA Power system with dedicated windshield, pot with cover or pan (depending on set generation), plastic bowl and an insulated pouch to store the whole system and or to put the freshly cooked food to keep it cooking with residual heat. As for the Express Spider itself - with the multifuel kit it does work, but with less power, as stated by the manufacturer (1500W if I remember correctly). Priming tray is a bit fiddly to mount and it prevents the legs from closing all the way, so the stove becomes slightly less compact. Overall It is a cool piece of design. I would like to see its next generation with concave burner head and a lip around it - similar to Soto Amicus or MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe.

    I have had this with the ETA Power kit for a few years. It mounts inside a windscreen, similar to the Trangia base, using little magnets in the feet. Very nice setup. I think as a standalone it is too exposed and tippy. Prefer Kovea with FlatCat windscreen since it is easier to invert

    Nice review Ernie! I have the original Spyder with magnetic feet I picked up a few years ago. It came with a surrounding heat shield that looks much like one of their pots and does a fantastic job blocking the wind but is a little bit on the hefty side if you were backpacking and concerned with weight. I did buy the multi-fuel kit and it does say to use different jets for different fuels but I found one jet that works very good with both the canister fuel and white gas in normal camping temps above freezing. I have not tried it in colder temps though. I have their assortment of heat exchanger pots too. Everything they make is in my opinion some of the best quality you can get. Jeff

    Looks great, I wonder about boil times with the propane adapter for these isobutane stoves since it works better in cold temperatures. I would think the ability to flip the canister upside down would be a better use with that large preheat tube but the valve seems to make that not an option. I really like the looks of the pathfinder stove and it is supposed to come with the adapters from the start.

    primus is my favorite. In 35 years of outdoors Experience, I've been trying a lot of gas stoves as well as gasoline and white fuel. Primus had almost always eventually had the upper hand. While American designs (or p.r.c copies alike) tend to throw power and heat all around those losing efficiency and waste fuel, Primus -and Trangia as well- tends to be focused and better. Maybe it's the military experience from ww 1-2. They do tend to be a bit heavy. But its great quality, hard earned field experience that earned my respect.
    A bit of a warning: after u try Primus, its hard to go back.
    About ignitor: u can buy and add one, or get it off a cheap stove and attach.
    For multi fuel: get the Garavity 3 model. I think it's generally better than the spider, that had been designed for bagpacking, but heavy and designed for car/ base camp/ mazzochist hikers.

    I have one of these stoves I got it at great price, overall I'm ok with it. My nits are that the legs do not lock in position (on my version) and the burner flame spread is small which concentrates the heat so frying and sautéing is difficult. I also have the Primus 1.5 liter ETA cook pot and the Optimus Terra Weekend HE Heat Exchange pot at .95 liters. Both pots work well with this stove. I admit after using this stove on a few trips I ended up selling my venerable MSR Whisperlite as I enjoy the performance and ease of use of this stove. Yes a windscreen is needed .

    As a cannister base remote stove is is kinda, meh. The Kovea Spider and the Fire Maple Blade 2 are better options. As a Multi-Fuel stove, this looks outstanding and has a tremendous amount of value (at $75 not including the conversion kit). All remote canister stoves can use a fairly tight windscreen so the open frame is not much of a problem. Good video, looking forware to when you find the converion skit.

    I prefer the heat exchanger type stoves, when the stove fits up into the heat exchanger. That makes them highly wind resistant. This one with the preheat coil negates that.

    Yes, preheated gas burns a bit hotter. However the main purpose of a generator is to evaporate liquids. So I wonder why they do not include a simple up side down adapter for the cartridge, which avoid destilling the gas. The purpose the this stove is for beginners starting with gas and get the option to multi fuel upgrade.

    • @mateuszm6394
      @mateuszm6394 Рік тому

      You can just lay it on something to support inverted position. Some rocks, branches... Or just let it stay somewhere between inverted and sideways. In this mode you loose fine flame adjustment anyway due to the large amount of fuel between the regulating knob and the preheating pipe.

    • @johnschmalbach8243
      @johnschmalbach8243 Рік тому

      @@mateuszm6394 I find the loss of fine control greatly exaggerated with my Optimus Vega so that is what brought the question to mind, because this, and the earlier Spider seems to just say "meh" to the issues of ease of use in cold conditions.

    • @mateuszm6394
      @mateuszm6394 Рік тому

      @@johnschmalbach8243 Vega seems to have much smaller diameter of the generator pipe. Maybe this is the reason? Something to do with the amount of fuel being vaporized at once? I have both versions of the Spider Express. The only difference I can see between them is the pattern of cutouts on the legs and slightly thinner sheet metal the newer version of the legs is made from. By the way, as the brass parts are made to fit the thicker legs, upgraded version of the stove is a bit wobbly (at least mine is - I do not see that here in PaleoHikerMD video it might have been changed in later production runs) and requires a shim to make it feel as sturdy as the previous one.

    • @mateuszm6394
      @mateuszm6394 Рік тому

      @@johnschmalbach8243 I have just tried to use Express Spider in inverted mode again. Simmering was not an option. I could only get "off", "jet engine" or "jet engine with afterburner" settings. • @johnschmalbach8243
      @johnschmalbach8243 Рік тому

      @@mateuszm6394 the design makes more since then. With the Vega the simmering in liquid/inverted mode is obviously not as precise as it would be in regular/gas mode but it's still better than some regular canister stoves I have used like the BRS and other stoves that sell themselves on their weight and speed of boils vs efficiency and cooking ability.

    Sorry, I don't get it.
    Why is it always how fast it can boil water, and how big a pot can be used.
    I don't cook for a whole company of soldiers.
    I cook for me, and maybe a friend.
    I use a 20 cm. Carbon iron pan. There is space enough for two steaks. A 1.5 liter pot is big enough for potatoes and vegetables for two people.
    For me, it is more interesting how SLOWLY it can boil water.
    The problem is often that I can't turn them down far enough so that I don't burn my steak, or burn the stew I'm trying to heat.
    And I don't really care if it takes 3 or 6 minutes to make a cup of coffee.
    If I want to boil water quickly on gas. I would use a Jetboil.
