I don't think the machines enslaved us because we're good sources of energy. If you watch "The Animatrix," it's explained that there was a class war between humans and machines. It would seem that they made us batteries as revenge, rather than out of necessity.
@@rafikz77our AI was the war. But we are allowed to feel. Physically and emotionally. We are allowed to breed. Either we feel this all in a simulation. And/or life is a gift to us by the intelligence.
We are not living in the matrix. The matrix is a metaphor for the algorithms used to simulate every individual in the hope of rendering them predictable. Our interactions with the algorithm, and more importantly, our confirmation of the predictions, are the energy that powers this.
I like the idea that this future super-intelligence doesn't know how it got their super-intelligence, and is running a universe simulator to see how humans discovered it. As soon as we build the technology possible to simulate the universe, we had better not turn it on, because that would answer the question for the super-intelligence, and they would probably shut down the computer program, ending our universe lol
They wouldn't just shut it down. If one thing was discovered in the simulation what makes them think that we wouldn't discover other things after that. Even the possibility of an alternate invesion.
Theoretically a Super Intelligence would understand that a simulation of it's own creation wouldn't provide useful information about a world it doesn't understand. If our existence was crafted by an intelligence, it's not very clever or kind.

The battery metaphor could well be true. Some theories suggest that there are entities that feed off fear, anger, hate, frustration, depression - the energy these emotions create. Plus, people are far easier to control, if they are fearful and depressed. If true, it would make sense why the planet's controllers would keep us in this state, much of the time. And keeping the Muggles slaving away so that an elite few can live in obscene luxury, with no need to even lift a finger, unless they wish to, certainly seems to be part of the overall plan.
It sounds to me like a lazy way to explain away things. It's too simple. The world is way too complex and we should embrace not knowing. it's ok to try to understand it and to create assumptions but this one is just too simple. At best it explains one or two things but they are many more things that does not explain. No matrix or simulation ideas can explain the metaphysical concept of ideas, the mind, feelings, values, love and many more. It can't also explain the laws governing the cosmos and how the atom behaves the way it does. I understand that there is another dimension for there is seems to be hints of it. Just the fact that I can conceive ideas that are beyond what the physical world can explain it's kind of a proof of that, but the simulation idea is not the one. A spiritual dimension is more likely than that. Of that dimension, we do have an extensive historical record, through ancient civilizations and the impact of religion. We can't yet experiment or even explain this spiritual dimension but there seems to be a lot of evidence of that.

It’s a complete logical fallacy. Computers can simulate physical reality, therefore, existence must be a computer simulation. And it’s assuming that somebody existed in a real reality prior to the simulation we allegedly live in. And also the assumption that all humans will go into a simulation for real life if we reach post-human time is baseless. It’s so illogical. There's one sticking point with Bostrom's theory: if I am a simulation of a person who once existed then how did the AI get the information needed to generate an accurate representation of that person's life? Or is more a "best guess" scenario? Honestly, if I'm a simulation then I'm a bit confused because so far as I know, I'm not anyone special or famous. I always find it interesting that the newest prevailing idea of what reality is for humans is based on the latest technology. The first humans worshiped animals for their strength and power. After we developed farming, humans valued a higher intelligence known as God, because we lacked the technology to explain our natural world. Now that we live in the technological age, we see that A.I. has the potential to be God, in a sense that it has the power to can create realities. It makes me wonder what the next form of evolution will be, after computers and A.I. If A.I. is just a machine that can solve small problems at an infinite scale, I would guess that the next step is a technology that doesn't just solve problems but is able to ask the right questions.
Let’s remember nick bostrom is philosopher, not a scientist nor an engineer. I’ve seen a lot of people taking what he said is fact when if you really read the opening statement to his essay it just says he believes one of the three following statements is true… lol
It's a hypothesis that is neither provable nor falsifiable at present. I don't know of anyone that thinks it is a fact. Don't belittle Bostrom's field / background. Take a glance at his PhD thesis. He also has degrees in math, math logic, AI, computational neuroscience and Physics. He is as qualified as anyone to make existential hypotheses.
I can’t see a valid argument agains the three premises, though. In fact, the bleakest - we wipe ourselves out with some great filter type event - is IMO the only chance we don’t end up running simulations when possible. And it will be possible. We see the world as incredibly complex, but there’s nothing saying it hasn’t already been simplified in countless ways.
Ah, but once we figure out how to use technology to enhance our own intelligence, suddenly the limits are gone and our enhanced selves will enhance ourselves to be even more advanced, rinse and repeat ad infinitum.

You are not a simulation. But you are being simulated. Think reflections, the simulation reflects to you, what it believes you to be, if you are happy with the simulation's reflection of you, you don;t question it. Your physical reflection, that you view in the mirror is no more than an analogue simulation, yet we consider ourselves to be gaining consciousness at the time we recognise our reflection as our self. Furthermore: The development of VR etc. is not to convince you that the VR are is real, it is to train your perception to accept a digital reality and reject the analogue, rendering you more susceptible to the reflections that the simulation offers..

How come nobody with a platform has ever pointed out that there are may other solutions to Bostrom's problem. Like how come nobody had provided any of these obvious solutions?
The original premise for the machines keeping humans around wasn't for energy. It was for processing power, a small part of which was used to help run the matrix (this explains the problems with creating a valid world and 'programming language' for it as well as the need for choice and even the supernormal abilities the red pills have), but it was deemed a simpler, more audience friendly dumbed down explanation was needed and the Wachowski's were told to change it.
Wow, I didn’t know that, but it seems like a much cooler concept. The computing power of one human mind is impressive and all, but the computing power of 7 billion minds combined would be much more valuable than a simple battery. Cool.

What if the creators of our simulation decide to see what happens when a hopelessly backward species encounters an space travelling species? Oh, nvm, I think they already know how that will play out. And with each each level decrease inside simulation, the accuracy increases but the scope of result also become specialized.

Some food for thought. Lets assume simulating another universe is a natural step for advanced civilizations to take. Even a simulated universe would evolve to a point where it can simulate a universe. We could be anywhere on this chain of simulations, but since we are unable to simulate a complete universe yet we can assume that we are either first or last on the chain of simulations. 50/50 chance we are simulation.
4:13 yeahhhhh.... that's a BIG leap in faith. We don't even understand what consciousness is, let alone have any idea of what kind of technology could replicate it. Consciousness could be very much an artifact of quantum effects that are diametrically opposed to our current - binary and deterministic - framework of computing.
So if we are in a simulation now, then what happens when we advance enough to create our own simulation. Just nesting simulations forever or does the hypnosis break down at that point.
This is why there's a 50% chance we are not in a simulation. Either we are the first reality where we can not create an advanced simulation yet or we are last in the nesting doll on our way to create the next simulation
You have to dumb your mind down a lot to believe it, but sure. Being in the metaverse can (in theory) be exactly the same as in real life. Resolving ethical questions around suffering should be dealt with first. It's time to stop blaming God of Satan for all the suffering humans experience, particularly to admit that humanity, or the so-called human-condition, is the cause of suffering (including that Buddhist problem of desire). This is not a simple problem. If we are going to create a virtual world, then we are going to become The Creators; and if there will be no way to escape that world, then those suffering there will blame its creators the way so many today blame God or Satan.

Thinking of a simulation in a computer is a very contemporary approach and therefore probably totally wrong.

It’s weird how there’s not a hypothesis that suggests human technological progress will inevitably halt because we’ve reached our maximum potential.

The original premise for the machines keeping humans around wasn't for energy. Power makes more sense. A super advanced AI capable of enslaving humans would not need a rolled back, simpler, slower processor.

And yes, this is a play to win game, a very serious game indeed. Very much like Free City! All we can take with us is the experiences.
Reality is a matrix upon itself
"Align with human intentions" that's the part that freaks me the most.
if we are in a simulation then what is in the real world, those who did the simulation may too feel the same?
If we live in a simulation, then God is real. Programmer = God
Very true
Wasn't the original draft of the matrix about human brains connected and working as processing cluster (like a network of supercomputers) instead of the energy source final version?
I think it must have been changed because a battery is easier to understand, even though it is nonsense in terms of thermodynamics
Regardless of the fictional premise, do you want to know what's really going on? For we ARE living in a simulated reality. HOWEVER, this simulation is not generated by a lifeless electronic computer. This matrix simulation is generated by - and within - the SOURCE of Life Itself! Want to know all of the details, including why your experience of this simulation became necessary? "The Book of God" at the website A Course in Truth. When science and religion find absolute Truth, they will find the exact same Thing - like I have.
Bumba was the creator.
At the beginning of time, there was only darkness and water, and Bumba, the creator, the first ancestor, was alone. Then he vomited up the sun, and there was light. The water dried up, and the outlines of landforms began to emerge. Bumba vomited up the moon and stars. Then he vomited again, and a leopard emerged, then a crested eagle, a crocodile, a fish, a tortoise, and the lightning, the heron, a beetle, and a goat.
This really felt like watching a program on the History Channel
His thoughts make a great Movie, but nothing more.
The Matrix...
The first tine you get punched in the face, you realize right then, This is Not a simulation.
Actually when I was hit in the head in rugby contact. It felt like time stopped any I left my body inwards and was thinking about my own existential existence for about what felt like 30 mins.
Then all of a sudden I felt myself going outwards into my body again with a buzzing noise and was still standing in the same position tackling the other person.
How real does a fight in a dream feel? You can wake up swinging with your heart racing and sweating. Swearing you were just in the middle of fisticuffs
If you cant tell the difference, does it matter?
of course he's a philosophy professor! why not ask an AI expert or electrical engineer or physicist about the topic? We would quickly experience the technical limits of a simulation and also get to know the energy costs associated with such an undertaking.
In the meantime I have to look for a more powerful PC because my flight simulator glitches all the time and the landscape is totally pixelated 🥴
Thank you. The speculations of these philosophers are infantile.
He also has degrees in physics and cognitive neuroscience.
