Hopefully this is format is only due to the world cup and they'll revert to the old format of 4 teams in each pool next year

It's been a long time since the Champions Cup is not "the one to win" anymore...

Why not just have each team play each other twice like the amazing Heineken cups in their pool games.

Disappointed with this. Cutting the tournament by 1 week it has permanently hobbled it. The old format of pools of 4 was far superior and made the pool stage engaging, especially in the last round of fixtures when teams tried to force their way into the last available QF spaces. Top 14 has 29 weeks of fixtures, but they end up cutting 1 week from the Champions Cup schedule instead. Makes no sense if you want to make a success of this tournament.
"More sporting jeopardy" is just plainly disingenuous to me. 16/24 teams progressing to a round of 16 means the same lack of jeopardy of the past few seasons will remain. Last season a couple teams progressed from the pools with only 1 win. That's likely to be repeated.
Scrap the round of 16, add one more week back in and revert to the pools of 4 so that those pool games are meaningful and have actual sporting jeopardy. Otherwise it is fatally devalued and I will have less interest in those matches before the knockout stages.
Finally "No repeated fixtures" is actually a bad thing in my eyes. I enjoyed the Munster v Toulouse match last season in the pools at least. If instead they only got to play them once, and that match were away in Toulouse I would be frustrated with not having a repeat fixture to try and even the score with them.

      You make some well-written points.
      However, I'll counter as follows:
      1) I prefer this more streamlined 4-match group phase, followed by a 4-round KO (as opposed to the old 6+3 with 4-team groups).
      2) While there is a large 16-team KO field, competition for higher seeding provides sufficient jeopardy, as no team wants to be seed 12 to 16 and potentially play four away KO matches.
      3) Even if a team advances to the 'Rd of 16' with only one victory, four straight victories are still required in the KO stage, ensuring a winning record (minimum 5 and 3) is required to win the title.
If I change anything, I would have the top 2 in each group and four 'wild cards' (best record teams regardless of group) advance to a 12-team KO stage, with the four group winners earning a first round bye.

Keep the Round of 16 it gives more teams a chance to qualify for the knockout stage

@@blackfrisbee6050 That just devalues the pool stage matches IMHO. When the majority of teams progress, some of them do so with only a single win and some bonus points.

@@michaelharnedy I get where you’re coming from, I suppose you could do it like the Champions League and expand the entire competition to 32 teams split into 8 groups, they each play each other home and away 6 rounds in total and then the top 2 teams from each group advance to the Round of 16

@@blackfrisbee6050 I don't think that's remotely viable for rugby. Champions League is open to about 55 leagues in the soccer. There's 3 leagues available to Champions Cup qualification. You'd be including the vast majority of those leagues' clubs and leave hardly any left over for Challenge Cup if you expanded it to 32 😂. I honestly don't know why they don't simply return to the old Heineken Cup format that worked so well for many years. I'd even settle for Champions Cup format with 20 teams before Covid hit. That might work better for Premiership that has been decimated and with only 10 clubs left currently.

This format is better but it's still fundamentally far too silly. At this point just make it straight single elimination. Put all the teams in. This is what the people want.

I absolutely disagree that 2 teams from the same country cannot face each other in pools stages

Is it too difficult for this organization to stick with 1 single and historic format, rather to change every year to satisfy every unions? The idea to open this competition to SA provinces rather to new european countries was already a bad idea... You needed more marketing bullshit. Sad.

The UEFA Champions League isn't any better. Its geared towards the popular league, meaning no team like FC Porto or Ajax can get close to winning it. Same in the Europa...
