I've learned over the years of being friends with other guitar players, that the ones who say that usually cant play worth a damn anyway and use that excuse as to why they cant play. I'm not saying that about you, but I'm sick of hearing people say that crap. If you feel it, you feel it even if it's 1,000 notes per minute.
I love Petrucci, few guitarists have inspired and moved me like him. I even love this version of purple rain, but the one at MI was much better. And seriously, what in the world happened around 4:10 until he stopped playing lead and recovered when began to play the chords. That was a complete mess. I wonder if he screwed up and couldn’t find the groove until he played the chords. I have never seen him play so badly in my life.
Awesome version, but if you want to listen to an even better one, google 'Neil Zaza, Purple Rain'. Possibly the best instrumental I've ever heard in my life.
You seriously need to educate your self when it comes to Guitarists my friend! John Petrucci plays for a Band called "Dream Theater" and IS probably the MOST Talented Guitarist to walk a stadge!Check em out Liston to the release entitled " IMAGES AND WORDS"
Nice version, but would have been a thousand times better if he played Prince's original lead guitar break at the end of this version just to cap it off.
too bad his virtuosity kills everything else. feelings matter more than technical stuff. Donald Roeser, Richie Blackmore and of course the legend Jimi Hendrix were maybe inferior in technics but are much much better than him because their technics were there to give you chill !!

I usually don't like "shredding" type of play but this is how it's done properly.
Killer vibrato....tone, chops, and feel.
