Steve laid the ground work for so many vocalists! He has and will be my favorite singer of all time. Thank you Linnea for sharing these amazing recordings !!!
Really cool. I didn’t know Kansas did a demo of this song! It definitely would have been for Audio Visions. Just hearing Walsh sing this brings a smile to my face, what a beautiful voice! Warren Ham ultimately sang the song on Kerry’s studio version for his Prime Mover album…
Agree 💯 with your assessment of Steve. I have no one to hold my hand at the end of this life. Steve has "been there" thru my Hospice days, that failed, and now with a week or so to go as my tumors become impossibly large-Steve is singing me on to a kinder, peaceful, more loving place. If only my dying wish to meet him had been realized. Steve Walsh is a magical force & a blessing to this World musically & in every context of the word "magical".
@@bethleinicke6436 Much love dignity and respect to you Beth. You are so close now to the many mystical lands in your minds eye that Steve's voice makes us imagine. I´m really sorry to hear! I survived cancer, atleast so far. Since I first heard Steve on Left Overture, when I was 14 years old, he has always been my favorite singer. No one touches me like SW. I get goose bumps everytime I hear him. We truly have something incommon. I can only wish you all the best! .
There is no blues/rock vocalist/songwriter/musician, who equals Steve Walsh, in my opinion. It isn't merely his vocal power, ability to roll his tongue around the notes & embody them; his angelic tones juxtaposed with his growls; his passion & pure adoration of of music-it is his genius songwriting talent & his musical ability to touch almost any instrument & meld with it as if they are one!
Steffan Pila My favorite Kansas song from the "Vinyl Confessions' Demos around 1981/1982. My favorite lyrics are: "Light The Way For the Chilrden Of The Shadows" and "The Chosen Son given the name of the Holy One." Very Spiritual and Very Progressive for a Classic Kansas Song. Thank you!!!

This song is so beautiful. Whoever sings it in Kerry's version really butchers it, especially after hearing Steve sing it. Even with the poor quality it's still so much better when sung by Steve. There's no comparison!
@@stevebennett987 LoL!! Maybe so, but I wouldn't choose to be from any other time. So thankful to have heard him singing all through the years. As far as music is concerned, we're from the best of times! 😊
After this point, Steve's voice--at least on recordings from Streets, etc.--was never the same. His voice was still great; but in these days up till end of classic Kansas his voice was still in its pristine youthful form. That form never returned on a Kansas album. Great voice yes, but that pristine clarity w/o guttural quality: gone forever.
Absolutely have to agree with you 100% here. The first-era Kansas Steve was an ubtouchable vocal God. It's really sad and plain jarring when you think that this is just before his voice started declining. Sure, he did branch out and get creative during his solo career after '82, but it's as if the moment Kansas went out of his life, he just let himself go. As soon as that part of his life had passed, he indulged in destructive habits that made his voice almost unrecognizeable. I like to think that Kansas gave him a lot of motivation to keep him going and abstain from drugs and alcohol; the standard that had to be kept was too high to fuck up. I sometimes wonder what his voice would be like in the 90's and 2000's--hell, even _today_--if Kansas eased up on the touring and settled down to record a bunch of material. Would Steve have kept his voice? That's something we can only ponder now.
The Kerry's version was great, but it's almost magical to hear Steve's voice and organ, also the distinctive Phil Ehart drums and Rich Moore guitars. Even if the music itself is Kansas level, this presences reminds me this was about to be a Kansas song as a group.
What a bad version sung by Warren Ham on the Prime Mover album, bad arrangement and sung to fast and bad. The Original versioni is 100 times better than the album version from Prime mover. So, Kerry is not always great with arrangements, I don't like talking about Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren like they were Gods, the same with the Beatls people, their fans seem to like to make them Gods without mistakes.
I prefer this raw version w Steve singing (a no brainer for me, his emotional voice wins every time in my book). I agree with you arrangement wise too, I wish this version had been recorded properly and not just as a demo.

A CD reedition with an extra CD of the demos and the DVD with the Omaha concert
