- Woke up thinking about Roshashanah and the time . Aretha Franklin ,Patti Labelle , and Gladys Knight Sang “Happy Birthday”and refused to let the other get the last note on “Happy Birthday,” and Gladys just let them carry on ,it was a great blast for these three powerhouses to be on the same stage together .💝💝💝.

Gladys has the lower voice able to carry the song.
Patti has a dramatic voice. She can hold notes go up in the rafters.
Aretha is one of my favorites. She had riffs and runs. I like the way she made you feel like you were living what she sang.

People are forever pitting Patti and Aretha against each other, they simply approach the music differently. As far as the projection of their sounds, definitely equals, Patti's a powerhouse singer that relies primarily on her crazy crescendo whereas is Aretha has better melisma, which is why she's more comfortable reaching low notes comparable to that of a baritone, however, both are capable of switching gears in performance and getting more rangey and reaching well supported notes in their head and chest voice. It's all a matter of preference from there. They're both equals in my eyes, they just have differing approaches to the music [as I previously stated].
I prefer Gladys Patti screams at time and Aretha was extra
@@lamontayjr4117 They were both extra,lol, agreed there. I admire Gladys' musicianship, and her subtle approach shows that sometimes less is more because she had the fullest voice out of the three.

Um patti labelle became famous before her so yeah and she can sustain higher and longer notes than Aretha
@@antnauer1055 No she didn't, Patti didn't have a hit until the mid 1970s. Patti was know on the black music circuit yes, but Aretha had already been declared the greatest voice in recording history during her time at Columbia records 1960 to 65. The musicians and singers at that time had never known a voice like it, Aretha was declared the greatest before she had even had a hit record which was in 1967. Within the church Aretha was considered the greatest voice even before she went to Columbia records on 1960, as a teenager from 1955 to 1960 Aretha's voice was literally knocking people over in the largest church venues across the US as she toured with her father and M.L King, again, the music or gospel world had never known a voice with such clear clarity and resonance and beauty of tone. Only a nut case compares an ugly sharp voice with a sour tone to the greatest voice in recording history. Aretha had no rivals, just ask Patti, she has stated many times that Aretha is the greatest voice.
Don’t overestimate Aretha she sounded worse cause she was extra

Her voice is sharp and ugly with a basic tone, there is no beauty in her sound, plus poor phrasing, pitchy, very little versatility and agility etc etc. She has a big voice with range, the way she used it to very dramatic effect was extraordinary, her electric head notes and operatic whoops were unmatched, but that doesn't constitute an all round great voice. She could never be up there with the greatest Aretha Franklin who's voice was perfection and had no rival. Or Houston or Anita or Gladys or Martha Wash or Candi Staton or Ann Nesby, they all have far more beautiful voices than Patti.

@@antnauer1055 actually Aretha was already famous in the 50s , mainly in the gospel circuit!! She cut her own first record at the age of 14 (1956). You gotta remember she started touring with her father, Rev. CL Franklin sometime in the 50s as a teenager. Ms Gladys Knight even mentioned that the first recording of Aretha , she ever heard was in 56/57 as a young teenager.
