I ran over a dead one on Honeybee...gave me the willies for 2 mins after. Hats off to you, I think I would have turned around and called it. Then again, I'm seriously afraid of snakes.
Dude you were awesome! I don't think I have the nerve to do that! You moved and protected that snake from getting ran over and other riders from having to deal with it cudos to you!
The snake was LITERALLY crossing and “moving along” until this guy whipped out his phone and started approaching. All he had to do was nothing. Then let the snake continue to cross. Instead he caused this situation by approaching 🤦♂️
Actually he was not moving when I saw him, and I was already wearing and filming with a GoPro, so I did not intentionally stop, just to video the snake.
AFTER 5 mins trying to set up my gopro to film myself going down a very rocky drop, (in one knee) I looked over and I see this huge rattle snake staring and rattling a big boulder a foot and a half away from my food, of course I didn't hear I had headphones inside of my full face helmet. felt like my heart stopped for a few seconds! Still dont know why it dint bite me.
Hey, Dirt-For-Brains, he's waiting for you to back off! If you encounter a snake on the trail the best thing to do is back up and give THEM a few minutes to calm down and move on. Once they realize that you're not a threat to them, they'll get bored and slither away. But when you throw dirt at them or move your bike wheel at them, that only irritates them. Snakes have the right of way in the desert. YOU'RE the one trespassing in THEIR YARD!
I'm and East Coast guy (MD). I am terrified of snakes. Visited AZ last July and went all through Saguaro NP. Every step was like walking through a mine field. Very careful not to come across any snakes. I guess they warn you first though.
Christina Brown the way he handled that was so dangerous he was just pissing it off and is very lucky to not have been attacked where I am from we call someone that careless stupid
I live in Michigan but this spring I'm going to be heading out towards Arizona and New Mexico. Before I bike any off-road trails in the desert I will be sure to get snake chaps.
The reason it remained on the trail, even initially, was because of the "attacker". In these situations, just get out of sight for a minute and it will be on its way. Or, just go around ... ya there are bushes, but walking through the desert for ~60 feet isn't that hard.
Any time you go off trail in the desert, especially a mountain bike trail it leaves tracks.... which others follow, then you have a braided trail before you know it.... and as soon as I nudged him he responded... no harm to either party...
Also, it won't be as dangerous for the next cyclist / hiker coming through if is off the trail. You might have kept it from getting run over or biting someone else. Good move!
its funny because the snake backed down and moved, allowing the rider to move through without issue. So the snake was instead like "ok sure tread on me."
As an Australian this just baffles me. You see a snake, you understand that your unique and beautiful assortment of atoms, as collated by the great protoplanetary disk that became our Solar System forged you and millions of years of evolution to refine you- could *all* be rendered non-sentient matter in seconds by a snake... ...and you treat it like a slow driver. And you pass with your body on *that* side. Far out. O.O
I totally get what you are saying. For me, I've been around rattlesnakes my whole life. I have probably relocated over 50 rattlesnakes to a different part of our ranch. On this occasion, it was no more than getting him off the trail. Once he was moving along and not coiled, no longer any danger to me 🙂
Snakes go away when you’re out of their line of sight. They don’t linger on the trails. What this biker is doing is just gonna keep it in defensive stance.
I couldnt mam i would have a heart attack if that were me i would of been gone miles before the snake even saw me jesus. I am very scared of snakes idk how you do this i just would have a heart attack im from ireland going on holiday to Arizona in April if 2021 im excited but i hope i dont come across any of these. Any tips for when im hiking alone?
First of all, if you are hiking alone, always let someone know when you are starting, when you expect to be back, and your exact route. Wear actual hiking shoes/ boots with proper socks, along with loose fitting long pants. Always be aware of your surroundings (no blasting headphones). Stick to roads and trails, especially in grasslands. Rattlers maximum strike distance is 2/3 of their length, and they won't pursue humans, so you'll be fine in an encounter if you maintain a respectable distance and just let them go about their business. Usually they slither off on their own, unlike the stubborn snake in this video. Many times there will be an easy detour route around the snake. Arizona has 13 rattlesnake species, and they can be found up to 11,000 feet in elevation, which accounts for about 98% of the state. So, there is the potential for a rattlesnake encounter in Arizona whether one is in forest, woodland, grassland, or desert. They even come out on warm winter days in the lower elevations. The Mojave is the most venomous, but the Western Diamondback (the type in the video) accounts for the majority of all bites. They are found in roughly the southern 2/3 of the state up to 6,500 feet. Happy hiking!
When people do this to move a Rattlesnake it pisses me off, and clearly shows they don't know what there doing. When a Rattlesnake is threatened it will NOT move. The best thing to do is threaten it from a distance an leave so that you still have a visual but the snake can't see you. They will retreat as soon as they feel like the threat has left. This is just showing off. People think they are doing a service by moving it off the trail. But really the snake knows it's in a danger zone and will leave anyway. Fucking with snakes this way is the #1 reason dumbasses get bite.
This is why I'm glad I'm a runner and not a biker. They can hear pounding from a long distance and are less likely to be on the trail by the time a runner comes through. The guy should have stepped back about 50 meters and started to run towards the snake...not close enough to get bit but close enough to alert it to a heavy animal charging down the path...there's a reason why bears and other big wild mammals don't get bit by snakes.
I used to think the same.... but I almost learned the hard way shoo-ing another rattler off the trail one time.... it literally struck and flung himself at me (of course I had really pissed him off by that time) I would say he was able to go 2/3 of his body length and missed my hand by only about 6".... so I have even more respect for distance from these fellows now!
I guess I was making a comparison to how you were approaching it. Kicking dirt and pushing your bike towards the snake probably confused the snakes interpretation of your intentions. Animals typically attack/lunge/strike quickly, and even birds/lizards/weasels evade at ludicrous speeds. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, in fact, I would of turned around. I'm just saying wild animals are on a whole other time frame than us, so I wasn't surprised the snake stood its ground.
That is true, they do not have external ears but sound makes vibrations and those vibrations are carried to it's inner ear through ground and the snakes body.... so no, they do not hear in the human sense, but they can "detect" when there is noise or sound :-)
Correct, no external ones but they do have internals that are like ears that pick up vibrations through their jaw bone and body... they "sense" sound vibrations ... although I'll admit my "talking to him" was more for my own benefit ;-) As you can see he stood his ground until I nudged him with my tire :-)
Yeah guy who obviously knows his way around these trails, you should heed the advice of the guy who prefers the NES version of Final Fantasy to the far superior Dawn of Souls release.
im on the fence on this one: on one hand i hate snakes, on the other i also hate cyclists but since this dude is mountain biking and isnt bothering anyone else, im happy with the outcome
Good grief man, WALK YOU BIKE AROUND THE POOR THING!!! I live here too and you're otherwise occupying them from keeping packrats at bay and you know it!
I ran over a dead one on Honeybee...gave me the willies for 2 mins after. Hats off to you, I think I would have turned around and called it. Then again, I'm seriously afraid of snakes.
...I'd rather have snakes that disease infested rats and mice...
😖I would call 911 to send the helicopter 🚁
Imagine falling off your bike rollin' through those Cati and insult to injury getting bit by a rattle snake
It's happened before. The rider didn't live to tell the story.
Dude you were awesome! I don't think I have the nerve to do that! You moved and protected that snake from getting ran over and other riders from having to deal with it cudos to you!

Yes, but if you are moving fast, like a trail runner or MTBer, then that might trigger their response.
Not really they getting smart they don’t make noises
Omg, it's obvious you have some experience with them I would have lost my mind which would of been super useful.
Christina Brown the way he handled that was so dangerous he was just pissing it off and is very lucky to not have been attacked where I am from we call someone that careless stupid
@@minirex2012 How would you have handled it?
Badass! Just last week I ran across two rattlers on the Harrison Greenway by Fantasy Island MTB Park. Nowhere near as beefy as that guy!
Damn what a stubborn diamondback
I live in Michigan but this spring I'm going to be heading out towards Arizona and New Mexico. Before I bike any off-road trails in the desert I will be sure to get snake chaps.
Thank you for not harming it.

I don’t think that rattlesnake passed his English as a second language class
I wouldn’t ride a bike through wearing shorts.
I might have seen you on this trail before, I'm out there quite often. I recognized it as soon as I saw it on Right This Minute
There's a reason it's in the Gadsden.
Don't fucking tread on me.
its funny because the snake backed down and moved, allowing the rider to move through without issue. So the snake was instead like "ok sure tread on me."
Is there another gear of “nope” to shift into?
As an Australian this just baffles me. Far out. O.O

I got more nervous when you dragged your front tire over cactus at 1:10 then I did for the entire snake encounter lol
😂
man.. if you fall over on that trail you are FUCKED
That snake sounds alot like my rear hub! lol Actually, i've seen lots of those on ORO valley trails.
If you use the water bottle to splash him he’ll move quickly
whoah!! and i'm the one afread of mountain biking ahead our only poisonous snake (viperia berus) in northen europe which cannot harm an adult.
Snakes go away when you’re out of their line of sight. They don’t linger on the trails. What this biker is doing is just gonna keep it in defensive stance.
Why did you chase him out of the trail? Was it to protect other people who might be passing by? That's nice of you.
so i could get by him!
.... and yes to get him off the trail so no one else would have to deal with him or possibly injure him.... Or get bitten
I couldnt mam i would have a heart attack if that were me i would of been gone miles before the snake even saw me jesus. Nice way to get a flat tire in the boonies.
uses a rubber tire to prod a snake...
for the time travelling cyclists, this will really come in handy.
wow that's huge
Dang crazy....where was this at ?
Video says arizona.
Valiente!!!
think about how fast these things strike, it was probably looking at you like "make a move, bro"
They can only strike about half their body length. That snake looked about 4 ft (1.2m) so it could probably only strike about 2 feet (.6m)
Oh, I'd also estimate this one about 3 feet, I know it looks bigger.... but still 3 feet is BIG
He made several moves. Bro.

Watch out for those snakebite flats ;)
Reason I could not live there. Might be pretty but couldn't stand the snakes. I even hate the garder snakes.
Well played..
What kind of bike is this?
Ibis Ripley - my favorite ride of all time!
It would be more fitting if it were a Diamondback bike.
I almost ran one over in Sedona, on the easy peasy trail...
Snakes don't have ears. You can talk and scream at it all you want. It won't hear you.
That is true, they do not have external ears but sound makes vibrations and those vibrations are carried to it's inner ear through ground and the snakes body.... so no, they do not hear in the human sense, but they can "detect" when there is noise or sound :-)

Might want to wear somethin to cover your shins riding there.
Yeah guy who obviously knows his way around these trails, you should heed the advice of the guy who prefers the NES version of Final Fantasy to the far superior Dawn of Souls release.
balls of steel
im on the fence on this one: on one hand i hate snakes, on the other i also hate cyclists

Here is my latest snake video - I get "bitten" in this one :-)

Sunny's Gadget Reviews Ok thanks
Good grief man, WALK YOU BIKE AROUND THE POOR THING!!! I live here too and you're otherwise occupying them from keeping packrats at bay and you know it!
Kill it!!!!
Isaac Hyde snakes are great animals, they shouldn’t be killed
I haven’t seen any rattlers in TX yet but plenty of copperheads and cotton mouths. Scares the crap outta me for the rest of the ride.
