  • Finally bought some new flutes from Taobao in early 2023. Didn't have time to edit, so the video came out pretty late. This is not a sponsored video and I am not advertising for these particular flutes.

    I love this video! Among your selection, I had bought a few 董雪華 and 湛文兵 in Tao Bao, and got very similar experience, even it’s more the expensive model. The most common problem in the Dizi I bought are their out of tune octaves (being sharp in low but getting flat when go up high, so fluctuated). I find the best dizi I bough in Tao bao are from the 王建宏, the tuning and craftsmanship are quite good. You may try!

    you can personally ask me questions about dizi and chinese wind music stuff, I am a dizi, suona and sheng player for 5 years, and I am lucky to have teachers and friends who are professionals in chinese dizi. In the future i plan to start making my own dizi once the bamboo behind my house is harversted and aged well

    as for choosing your dizi, the maker produces the best dizi in the tezhi 特制 grade, however, the jingpin 精品 grade can be a good gauge of the makers expertise. A really good sounding dizi will not dissapoint and will leave lasting impressions not to mention that it will be very helpful to have perfect tuning to 442Hz as chinese orchestras standard.
    I personally started with cheap dizi of jingzhi 精制 grade or lower, then after some years of practice, i switched to jingpin 精品 grade dizi and i was super impressed on how easy it is to reach the upper 5/Sol register. Also i am not struggling to control the pitch variation when switching registers, soon i plan to switch some of my dizi to tezhi 特制 handcrafted grade after 3 years. BTW i have a friend in professional chinese wind ensemble using CNY/RMB1500 and up dizi

      Thanks for your input. I'd say maybe companies do categorize like that. I don't know. But I don't believe for a minute that these product labels are accurate in any way. Sellers tend to put whatever they like in the product listing. Product titles that use the same term can have dramatic differences in price. I don't believe search terms are a good gauge for flute quality.

    for buying dizi from taobao, there are a few keywords to look out for, jingzhi 精制 will be the decent entry level dizi of acceptable quality, not impressive in high register, jingpin 精品 will be intermediate grade and very suitable for learning, school orchestra and will go quite a long way, much better sound than the jingzhi grade, the tezhi 特制 flutes are handcrafted dizi, for soloists and very satisfying sound across all registers, also look out for the word 手工 meaning handmade and also hand tuned not drilled by stencil

    I have a question, what is the best joint for a flute? I saw that there are two types. I am referring to the metal tubes that flutes have.
    Thanks for the answers

    • @heartsonchannel
      @heartsonchannel  3 місяці тому

      I believe the kind that has a smaller diameter joint going into the other side isn't as good (and are usually cheaper). Get the other kind for a better seal.

    next for membrane or dimo, i found that the membrane sold by dizi-making sellers to vary by quality and long lastingness. Discounted "high quality" dimo is usually old stock, expires in half a year or less before it turns dry and hard. So I do not bother to buy dimo from dizi sellers, instead my orchestra and many teachers recommend minggui 明贵 dimo. However there are many version, variations and brands which carry the minggui dimo but do expect a much better quality of sound if you invest in a more expensive dimo. also be aware of professional or performance grade dimo with a super expensive price, those dimo give great and loud sound, but are often too thin and fragile, needs a lot of replacing

      @@heartsonchannel my current setup is a jingpin 精品 grade dizi in C and D with minggui 明贵 dimo (red coloured pack), and i am using in in my uni's chinese orchestra. I find that I can easily switch different keys on the same dizi by modified fingering, and coupled with the high pitch accuracy of the good dizi, makes it useful for many songs and orchestral repertoires
