  • In this video we unpack and fit our Expedition roof rack to our 2020 Land Rover Defender 110. The roof rack is part of the "Explorer Pack" and is Land Rover Part number VPLER0180 VPLER0181. We were actually really impressed with this product it went together really well and is very well thought out and guess what... no cutting needed ! The retail price for this rack is £950 + VAT !
    I have now made a drawing of the dimensions

      That roof rack is made by Thule, those individual bars are Thule wing bars and those rubber strips come like that as you can have things mounted on the track it’s called t track, you cut holes in it for the fixings. Wing bar has been superceeded now by wing bar evo and the strips don’t need to be cut

    Just fitted mine. We then removed it after a 200 mile test run by undoing the 13mm flanged nuts and lifting the whole thing off. Works well and quick to remove and re install. Mpg went down by around 3mpg on my d240 FE. Does not affect the opening of the sunroof, and the noise was very minimal on what has been a very windy week in mountainous Lincolnshire.

    You can mount the ladder with the roof rack already mounted no problem. If you want to mount or unmount the side box you will need to unbolt the roof rack on the side the box mounts to and then lift up the roof rack and the mounting plates can be slid underneath. No need to remove the whole rack.

    • @L663
      @L663  4 роки тому

      Yes - I think you can just remove the rear pillar easy enough. We are also looking at using some other T nuts that spin in and rotate.

    • @shawnpalmer6966

    Question I have with the mounting brackets. You always have interesting insight so I thought I'd ask. I've always felt the expedition roof rack has a nice shape to it, but it rides too high. Can you just install rack to roof rail attachments directly onto the roof rails and without the plastic 4" brackets? That seems it would bring it down 3" in profile and while the antennae may poke up a bit over it, but otherwise it sure would be lower profile. enjoying your videos so thanks for all of them.

    Just complete this install today in 22 degrees weather! Your video saved me an hour or so! One thing I recommend is when installing the rubber strips into the wing bars, slide the rubber strip under the side frame on each side. This will give you an inch total and also helps keep it tucked down.

      @@L663 Thanks for reaching out Simon!
      Eyelets/eye loops/tiedown rings that utilise the t-track would be a great start. Lots of things can be secured with those on the platform. Other things I’ve been looking for are accessories to secure recovery boards, shovels and supplementary lighting like these:
      Front runner:
      www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/be/rack-accessories/storage-accessories/front-runner-galvanised-tie-down-rings.html
      www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/be/maxtrax-brackets.html

      Rhino:
      www.rhinorack.com/en-us/products/roof/platforms-and-baskets/pioneer-platform-and-basket-accessories/pioneer-eye-bolt-kit-4-_43178
      www.rhinorack.com/en-us/products/spares-brackets-components/brackets/light-brackets
      Just getting t-bolts of various lengths with a washer and nut that fit the rails would be great too. Then various brackets for attaching lights on the sides and back etc. The LR design of the platform has the slats cross wind/travel direction and that minimises the usage on the left and right sides, so possibly some larger side brackets or rails that add flexibility on the sides?
      Another idea I’ve had is to find another “lunchbox” mount on that side that gives more flexibility of attaching accessories…. Some carry fuel/water on that side....
      Lots of ideas here, but just starting to get simple eye-loops and ability to flexibly mount things on the side of the rack would be a good start with a large potential customer base for owners of the factory platform.
      Thanks for listening 🙂

    Great video again. I was watching with interest to see if the rack holes would line up with the pillar supports you put in and tightened up first. I think a bit of off camera trickery took place here. The mounting system is good in that after initial set up it appears easy to take of a reinstall by undoing the pillar to rail nuts. Sadly I think landrover have overlooked what happens next, how does one tie stuff down on the rack. My current disco 4 rack cross beams have slots in which I can fit eye bolts into anywhere I choose which are very handy and I can slip in M8 nuts and bolt anything down anywhere I want. So sorry landrover, I think i will be going aftermarket again for my rack. Nice engineering though.

    Hi Simon, have you seen the Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rack Kit? You don't need roof rails to attach it, it looks more utilitarian as you can add Front Runner accessories and its cheaper than JLR roof rack, would you consider fitting? Im unsure which to buy.....?

      I found this rack you are talking about here :-www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/uk/roof-racks/land-rover-new-defender-110-slimline-ii-roof-rack.html
      I have a few comments
      1) it seems to partly cover the rear antenna so this could be a problem
      2) it does not seem to have wing profile slats so this could generate more wind noise
      3) it looks longer than the LR one so that could be a positive.
      4) it seems more expensive than the Land Rover one ? LR one is £1140

    • @vaughanmarbrow2690
      @vaughanmarbrow2690 3 роки тому

      I think this version can be fitted without roof rails, so if you didn’t spec the build with rails the Slimline II may be cheaper..? I agree with the wind noise, albeit they say wind deflectors come with the kit. It does look more like a front row forward rather than the streamline version that JLR offer, the only question I have is the Frontrunner rack more utilitarian...? Cheers Simon

    Hi Simon. What size are the slots in the top of the rack for mounting bolts? Also need to know the depth of the channel, as some accessories use a threaded plate, with a bolt which screws in (downwards) and hence length is critical so bolt doesn't "bottom out" inside the channel. Others have the bolt welded to the plat which slides in the slots - but there are 2mm, 4mm, 6mm (thickness of the plate) available. Plus also different bolt widths (M6, M8) - need to know what will fit. Thanks! Cheers for a great video (again!).

      I'm in the same boat like you Lei Pan. I'm having the roof rack installed this week and I also have a Thule Motion XT XXL box that I want fitted on the platform. It fits really well with the LR Defender crossbars using the "claw grip" on the box, but I've gotten the Thule T-track adapter kit (697-4 for my model) and would like it to sit flat without removing any slats. According to my dealer it appears that Thule is the actual vendor for this rack so the T-track adapter should fit, but I'm worried that the bolts might be a bit short. I'll test it out next week after getting the car back. I've also started looking for T-track bolts that fit Thule separately, but I have so far not been able to find any....Maybe @powerfulukltd can locate and sell some??? :) I'd pick them up in a heartbeat. Racks like Frontrunner and Rhino have tons of accessories, but there are none for this platform....

    Hi Simon would that roof rack be able to take a roof top tent with 2 people in it....on that small diagram it said Max weight capacity of 130 kilos i think roof top tent is probably about 70 kilos so you may be putting to much weight on it ?

    • @L663
      @L663  4 роки тому +3

      There are a few things to consider here...
      1) Dynamic load - when you are braking / accelerating / cornering there will be some strange and large forces on the roof load so this may be the basis for the weight limit on the rack - static load would probably be OK
      2) Roof rack bowing - the weakest part of the roof rack will be the cross struts - these are likely to bend if large weight is put on these - if the load of 2 people was spread then i am sure it would be OK
      Just no playing hide the sausage in the roof tent though Ralph .. this could induce some dynamic loads !

If you are happy to drill away through the cross bars it is an easy install unless you want to preserve the look and finishing by using the slots on the cross bars it become a bit of a challenge. I wanted a quick release and install option and made some plates that I use to install and de-install. I lower the tent from a hoist system above the roofrack and then tie down with 4 bolts. Took some time to figure out and had everything made up, but installation can be a one man show now taking about 10min max. Maybe Simon can consider using this design as an aftermarket option.
