- For the first time, Kristen watches one of the top 90's horror films of all time, The Blair Witch Project, a found footage horror film that started the sub-genre. It's about a group of film students who go to a small town to make a documentary about the legendary Blair Witch, only to succumb to their own madness once they get lost in the woods.

If you didn't watch this in 98, you missed it. The ad campaign around it was insanely good. The world was different, movies were different and this movie was the start of a whole genre that now also sells in the gaming industry. Found footage and psychological horror is about triggering the darkest fears of the viewer's mind, that's why they don't show anything. It's up to you, create your own monsters - nothing can beat that.
I remember when this real life documentary came out RIP for those campers
Like everyone I knew thought this was a true story because of all the marketing that went around it, and found footage being brand new. It was crazy
I was not even in my mothers belly at that time lol.
I fairly enjoyed it and I watched it a year ago.
This movie had a huge hype but there were other ones way before, for instance, The McPherson Tape came out in 1989.
I'm not alone in believing it was the actual footage we watched inside the movie theater. The theater was silent when it was over. You could hear a pin drop, everyone left silently, traumatized probably
Yeah same 👍🏻
Same, it's the only time I've ever believed when the media did the whole "so scary audience members threw up and fainted" thing they do on every horror movie they want to over hype today.
An absolute low budget masterpiece of a film. It has subtle yet realistic scares.
The way they marketed this movie is amazing
Because the Internet was a new thing there wasn't social media or even UA-cam.
We were in middle school when this came out. It was before the internet was widely available and we were told and thought it was real footage that was found and pieced together to make a movie. Made it extra creepy.
Somewhere in my storage I have the book for this movie. I saw it in theaters, went home, dialed up the internet on my phone line, and read every page of Heather's Diary that was posted to the website. The marketing around this movie was pure genius, and could never be duplicated. We all believed this was real found footage.
After they filmed this, they made the actors go into hiding for at least a year after the film was released so people thought the film had actually happened. It was to the point where people actually thought the actors had passed away.
The lead actress regrets using her real name for the film and actually has since legally changed it and quit acting altogether. It got to the point where people were sending her family sympathy cards and such because they thought she actually vanished.
They also actually tormented them on set, they hid canisters with instructions on where they should go. And essentially had people just go up to and mess with them to get genuinely scared reactions.
Brilliantly realistic film, and brilliant marketing but it's so sad that it essentially destroyed her life. I haven't looked into how it affected the other actors but I hope they are doing better.
I saw this in theaters and was genuinely terrified the first time. Most horror movies don't scare me though. This one just felt so real and raw. Excellent reaction, thank you!
Its actually horrifying as hell. Very creepy movie. I loved it.
This is one of the rare movies that actually scares me and it's for the very reason you said. It just feels so real.
This film actually has a lot of lore and backstory associated with it. It's a pretty fun rabbit hole to go down if it's your kind of thing. Sadly the best source, the website, is defunct but pieces of it still exist on the internet archive wayback machine.
Crazy movie!
My parents and I watched this and thought it was. A true story! Lol!!
I saw this in the theaters the weekend it came out. "Found Footage" wasn't really a genre back then like it is now. Everyone in the theater thought this was real. It wasn't until a couple of weeks later that we found out it wasn't. By then, the damage was done. I was terrified!
Side note, I saw this with my brother. We saw a late show (around ten o'clock or so) and lived in a rural area about 40 minutes from the theater. On the way home, it was very dark and there were barely any cars on the road. We kept scaring each other by thinking up the worst hypotheticals about what might happen if our car broke down etc.
When we were about five minutes from home, my brother started saying that he needed to use the bathroom. As soon as we got home, he ran inside and I walked into the dark house by myself. When I turned on the light, I saw my brother standing in the corner with his back to me like the characters at the end of the movie. I screamed louder than I have before or since. He still teases me about that.
I'm glad you enjoyed it with the knowledge that it's not real! Lol!
12:17 Fun Fact: This shot was supposed to look completely different but when she pulled the camera out of the bag to take the shot she accidentally turned the focus so we got this way up close way more creepy shot then the full face standard type of shot.
Tell me your heart wasn't racing the last 2 minutes of that.
If she hasn’t seen these movies check them out: Host(2020) and As Above So Below(2014).
Girl I don’t know why they set you up like this lol
I know that anything my mind can conjure up is far more terrifying than anything a studio can cook up in a workshop or with CGI. This movie scared me so bad when I saw it originally that I didn’t even want to walk near trees for an entire summer.
Great reaction - it's always great watching you react to horror films, but really think about your own well-being first - if these are cumulatively getting under your skin, then take a break from them - it's great watching you react to any films, so you don't have to immerse yourself in these if it upsets you too much - this film came out before reality TV, and it was the film that launched the found-footage trend - nobody had seen a film like this; watching it again now I'm struck by how well it holds up - it's actually very well done, with excellent performances, and it all feels so raw
Love your reactions Kristen ❤️❤️🥰😍👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Definitely one of the best ones in history and didn't even have a big budget but it's probably because of the cameras they used that added to the creep factor
The older the movie gets the more authentic it looks
They had you watch this aLONE?? 😅 we're all retrospectively here for you Kristen!
I *prefer* her watching alone
When I first saw this movie I was so done with it for most of the run time. They were whiny. They were annoying. They made bad decisions.
... and then you see the guy standing in the corner in the basement at the end. That freaked me out and still does today when I'm in the basement of an old house. Crazy. 😂
... Oh, and you should look into how this was made. The cast were told very little up front ... sort of guerrilla filmmaking.
13:08 that doesn't work once you stay overnight in those woods. If you check out the 2016 sequel it expands on the lore. Pretty much, there's no way out.
Book of Shadows should have been a different unconnected movie it was "too good" to be attached to this one you can tell the huge leap in production and actual actors makes it feel out of place it's a great movie I've seen it just about as many times as this one but they needed to down grade the cameras and make it also feel indy if not found footage.
Back when less was more
love to see kristen sp reaction on horror/thriller movies
I was 5 when this movie came out so I didn't get to see it in theaters, but the first time I did see it was about a decade later, sometime in the late 2000s when I was in middle school. I was home alone one evening and the power had gone out, so I thought "hey, I've got this movie I've been meaning to watch on my ipod touch, I can't really do anything else so I might as well do it now."
That was a mistake. I once made the same mistake with the short story "The Empty House" by Algernon Blackwood around that same time. Lesson learned.
Kristen you are my favorite reactor on the channel 😊
Great reaction! It did feel real haha. I hope you react to Hellhouse LLC next, reallllly great found footage type horror movie!
If you somehow think this is scary, we need you to react to “As Above, So Below” 😊 It would be a delight
The girl in this graduated from my university the year before I was there. I think she now changed her name to get away from this movie and runs a weed farm.
Where can I find this film you play a witch in? I think you’d be a great witch and I wanna see it!
….this movie came out in 1999?!?!?
I remember when this real life documentary came out RIP for those campers
Just hearing about a movie made of compiled found footage when I was in high school back then was enough to get so much groundswell - it really was brilliantly done. In fact, I made it a point to avoid it because even the premise scared the absolute crap out of me. I didn't see the flick until... 2006-ish? Once it ended, I just chuckled and slow-clapped.
I saw this in theaters. I could not believe how many people thought it was real. They drove the real life Burketville people nuts with their silliness.
I do that too at night sometimes. I will put on Christmas cartoons or ninja turtles or Heman cartoons. There's comfort in that when you close your eyes to sleep!!!
This movie was so good and the very first time that I have saw this movie was on Cable TV. It was really scary and terrifying and also mind boggling too. To this day I still love this movie. The Blair Witch Project was first released about 25 years ago in theaters.
My brother’s mother in law believed this was real found footage
I really enjoy your reaction to this movie a lot.
The new one is really good also. U get to actually see the witch lol Worth a watch ⌚
For marketing they actually put up missing student flyers at major East coast colleges.
The ethics of it is studied to this day.
This was done with the price of a car and made hundreds of millions. As far as the story goes, from the moment they entered that forest they were bewitched. The best example is they followed a stream in one direction all day and came back to where they started, That isn't walking in circles. It's impossible.
I'd love to see you react to Session 9, probably one of the best psychological thriller/horror movies to come out in the last 25 years. A good portion of it was filmed in what once was one of the most creepy places on the planet, (Danvers State Hospital/Insane Asylum,) before part of it was torn down and the rest renovated, the atmosphere of the film is on another level. Many people consider it 'elevated horror', but it certainly leaves a very lasting impression after watching it, with some of the most iconic images in film history. After watching it, you might need more than just Christmas cartoons when you try to sleep though...
Hey great spooky movie for sure! This movie freaked me out back then! Hey Kristen I would love to see you and Vivian either react too Child's Play 1988 or Stephen King's It 1990.
Oh, this was such a fun time for me just before this film came out, with all the noise and speculation about it. When I saw it in the theater I loved it. Just a good, creepy, scary time.
my favorite reactor from cinepals! Haven't really seen this in yeaaarrrss but it's still pretty good
Almost all of this movie was ad-libbed. They were given GPS coordinates every day and walked to that location where there would be 3 sets of instructions, each actor would read them and keep them secret from each other, they weren't scripts, they were just instructions on how they should ACT and what major events were supposed to happen and they played off each other.
I remember they advertised this as being a true story, be next to impossible to do that these days 😆
😂 Love your reactions they are so lively 😊
Wow very brave to watch horror alone Kristen 👍👍
this is the scaryst movie i ever seen in cinema. 1998 or 99 internet was smal. there was no imdb or youtube to check the trailer or the actors. there was only the BWP Homepage and the roumers about. found footage material there made a movie out of it. and we are sitting on our seats in cinema, my hands where sweating i felt like im in the woods with these 3 people. and i watched many horrorfilms at this time (the thing, the fly, evil dead and so on). but BWP was so fckn realistic. and there where no end credits. the movie was over and slowly the lights go on and all people in the cinema are in shock, glued on the seats all was quite. thats end? omg are they 3 students dead? best cinema expierence ever!
They did try to keep walking to get home but they couldn't. It's kinda the whole premise of the film.
How funny would it have been if Kristen thought this was real when watching it? lol. Hell, I thought it was real when I first saw it. Needless to say, I was relieved to find out those people were just actors and were alive and well.
Fun Fact: lead actors weren’t sure what they were in for. Fearing the movie might be a real-life snuff film, Donahue brought a knife to set.
Watch "Blair Witch 2" next💡👍
They released a dossier of evidence related to the events of the movie and it's pretty interesting.
Wait.... Wait wait. Did Kristen just say "another paranova activities"?!?!
just for sh¡t and giggles you should react to Cannibal Holocaust, the first found footage movie from the 1980 🤣🤣
I watched this when it came out and I was like 11 out in the middle of nowhere in my grandparents house that was unfinished. Good times lol
Saw this when it first came out. I thought it was all true. A couple of weeks later we all found out it was fake. I was 22 and dumb. What can I say.
I was 21 I think when this came out and went to it with my gf, best friend and his gf. We thought it was real as well. It creeped me the f out. Then of course we found out later it wasnt true. But I was ready to believe!
It might have taken a few weeks or months until I learned the truth. The topic came up while talking to my older brother, and he mentioned something about the actors appearing on Jay Leno's Tonight Show
This film literally not only started a genre but how especially horror films are made. Blum house was literally created off this framework. Produce really cheap well made movies.
Kristen pls continue your MCU Journey! im waiting for you Captain America The Winter soldier reaction.
I wanted to love this film so much. The commercials for it leading up to it were masterpieces, making it look so good. Then, when I watched it, it was one of the worst things I had ever seen in my life. I couldn't stand it enough to even watch the whole thing. Other people love it and good for them but I thought it was complete garbage.
Jadd J.A.D.D. Jadd
This movie wasn't scary to me, but it was creepy in parts, especially at the end. Kirsten, I want to see you in the movie where you played the witch.
Damn they made her ass watch it alone 😂
12:01-12:37.....Thank you, thank you, thank you for cutting out the snot. It's still just as nasty on the small screen as it was on the big 😂😂😂
Tradition is you are supposed to watch this in the dark in the woods. I will never talk down about this movie. I won't speak of the plot. I know how it was produced and for much of it they went along and used what they had and otherwise ad-libbed a lot which makes it art. What this film was establish this filming style. Well? Originally by the studies it was the show COPS which is also the mother of reality tv shows. But anything thereafter that uses this style in any form is derivative of this film. So what they did here made a forever impact on the industry and the arts and it is worth commending the production team for that.
I hope you watch the UA-cam video from the Film Theory channel about the secret killers in Blair Witch. Awesome analysis about this film.
the only thing more interesting than the movie itself is the work that went on prior to its release.. and what happened to the actors following its realease.
it really wound up being sort of a double-edged sword, of sorts.. but brilliant marketing.. in fact, i'd say its not really been topped since.
This movie is just one big tease, nothing happens
If you liked this for what it is, then check out The Forth Kind. It was marketed similar to this move as being real found footage.
You guys should totally react to the movie Pumpkinhead. It's one of my favs and very underrated.
If you want another similar one try UFO Abduction - The McPherson Tape from 1989.
Yeah Kris, u shoulda brought a friend.
My friends and myself gone on opening night to watch this. They hate blaire witch documentary on tv and folks believed it to be true.
You my gf which became an wife gone motion sickness because of this. One reason I saw Clover field by myself as the even made me dizzy as hate.
A smartphone with GPS and this movie don't happen
Home Alone would be the same.
The funny thing is In real life there is a GPS in that bag
How does this movie suck? Is it the great pacing, ambience, acting? Seriously, do tell. Because the cameras they’re using don’t have HD? lol
ハッピーリトルディングドング〜
Y’all should follow up with mattpats theory on this movie
It's maybe good that these guys got lost and eaten or whatever, because before stuff starts going wrong it seems like their documentary was probably going to suck.
Why is she alone in this one?? That’s is cruel 😂
This girl was living in the center of the earth.... She never watched a movie before
I didn't follow the ad campaign at all in the day but still really enjoyed this movie back in the day. Prefer this to any slasher nun movie and whatever.
what was the Japanese movie called?
Watch grave encounters next
Those bits and pieces of horror films r being archived in ur sub-conscious.
The medical community doesn’t know much about the conscious mind let alone, the sub-conscious.
The sub-conscious can b destructive.
It cost 8 million to make and made $249 million at box office.
You're watching it alone? The others did that on purpose to Kristen didn't they?
Watch the evil dead movies
Idk if this is a bad opinion, but the second one better. I say that as someone who likes the first one.
Real Horror Movies:
Annihilation, The Tall Grass, The Green Inferno, The Ritual, Identity, The Void, The Thing 2011, It Follows and Hellraiser 2022 💡👍
I would like to watch a scary movie with this woman 😂😅
You should watch Pontypool
I mean you can love or hate this film but money talks. When you spend 60k on a film and it banks 248 million I'd say mission accomplished
Great review :) and looking cuter than ever ;)
Please react to the Saban’s Power Rangers 2017 Movie!!! It is a very goooood movie. You may look at the name and think it is childish and cheesy. But it is hilarious and shows the growth of friendship and trustworthy. I swear it is a must watch.❤❤
B👀BS
Journey to the center of the earth 2008 please
Lol
