- 70. Sailing Ladona
Filmed June 11 to 14, 2023. We headed to Rockland, ME to spend 4 days aboard a century old wooden tall ship.
The 82 ft Ladona was built in Maine in 1922 as an ocean racing yacht. She took first place in the 1923 Bermuda Cup. Because of her ability to avoid detection by German U-boats, she was used as a submarine patrol vessel in WWII. Now she is part of a windjammer fleet taking tourists up and down the coast of Maine.
We've never been on a tall ship and were amazed to see how little wind it took to move this 90-ton ship. Over 7 knots in 15 knots of breeze!
The Grace Bailey, another windjammer, has no engine and is maneuvered by a skiff with a 70HP engine. The Ladona has a new 150HP John Deere.
Sail Day 1: headed to Bucks Harbor. Got to hoist the sails!
Sail Day 2: after breakfast, we headed to shore for a quick look around Bucks Harbor. Then we set sail to Carvers Cove where the GAM was to be...and raft up with 8 other tall ships!
Sail Day 3: last stop was North Haven and our final night at anchor. Along the way, while under sail, we picked up dinner directly from the first lobster boat we saw.
Sail Day 4: foggy motorsail back to Rockland.
We were pretty lucky...good weather and good company.
A fun adventure!
