  • A Webinar brought to you by the RIN Maritime Navigation Special Interest Group.
This is the first Webinar in a series relating to Autonomous Vessel Navigation. In this Webinar Tom will take a high-level look at the developing world of marine autonomy, providing an introduction intended to explain the potential strengths and real challenges offered by autonomy in the maritime. He will look at the practical applications of autonomy and touch upon Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in mariner-like decision making. The presentation will include an assessment of the actual state of technological progress and likely development path in a field which has received significant, but not always accurate, attention from the media. The Webinar is intended to act as a scene setting piece for a further series of RIN Webinars examining marine autonomy in more detail and will conclude with a Question and Answer session.
    About the speaker:
Thomas Howe is a Fellow of the RIN and for the last nine years has been working closely with the Ministry of Defence defining the architecture for the practical assurance and certification of Marine Autonomous Systems. This has given him considerable practical insight into the rapidly evolving field of marine autonomy and specifically the navigation challenges which must be overcome to fully realise the benefits of uncrewed shipping in both naval and commercial applications.
