    I got this hi-hat really early on the first few days it was available, ran into many issues at first (only given the one super small clutch and rotation stopper, no washer etc), after some back and forth they very quickly sent out a larger stopper then later on the washer / gasket. Glad both of these are standardized now so nobody has to deal with nothing fitting on a thick hihat rod (I had a proel Tamburo hi-hat at the time which is even thicker than Tama's, got an Iron Cobra 905D now). The new cable also fixed every issue I had with it, plays perfect for me now. Great reviews as always!

      I fixed the thick rod (heh) issue by ordering a Lemon hat stand at the same time (an extra £20 or so). I'm certain I'll lose that rubber washer at a gig soon though 😬🤔

    Lemon’s customer service is honestly better than Roland’s imo!
    Try to reach out to Roland for replacement parts, or get a fast response from them on anything.
    Lemon is a brand that I think we can all trust at this point, and if the cymbals only last 2 yrs - you can buy four of them for the price of a single Roland cymbal. This brand is the ultimate value proposition

    I use nylon tips after noticing how wood left marks on my ecymbals. My brother switched to nylon after I pointed it out to him on his td50 cymbals. I clean my cymbals with 303 protectant occasionally too. Works very well.

      @@ericiidxI think the newer ones may be a slightly different rubber. I have older Roland cymbals and my Vic Firth sticks dont leave much of a mark. The wood ones leave colored marks that look bad.

    Thanks Luke for your videos! Just wanted to pop on and say I just got mine and they’re working well with my Roland TD-17. They sent two washers which was nice and the process to put together was well explained in the directions.
    As far as settings I haven’t had to do much adjusting. It was pretty much plug and play. Honestly I thought the pedal sound was quieter than the VH-10.

    Great video, Luke. Thank you. I assume there's no issue when connecting to a VST like SD3 as this is handled in the usual manner thru module/VST settings (VH11)? I have a TD12.
    PS is it HHS not HHC?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Nick! There shouldn't be any particular issues due to using a VST, no. As you say, the module handles the triggering and open/close, so as long as everything is set up right between the two devices, all should work as expected.
      No, it's LE-HHC12. The product code only comes up when you bring up the full product details on the Alibaba page though, the title of the item is "Lemon double-piece Hihat with controller drum cymbal drum parts for electronic drum set" 😅
      Edit - Oh, I *think* the HHS one might be the single piece "hi-hat cymbal & sensor" version! That one has no bottom plate.

      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому

      Thanks! If you're happy with your VH-10, the differences with this Lemon LE-HHC12 will be mostly in the aesthetics and the fact that you can use the pressure/extra tight closed sound functionality with the VH-13 preset. Whether you think that's worth swapping is totally up to you - it might not be!

    • @paradiddlesjosh
      @paradiddlesjosh Рік тому +1

      DISCLAIMER: I don’t own the Lemon HHC12 yet, nor the DM10 MKII Pro, but I do own the original DM10 Pro. If the DM10 MKII Pro uses the same DM10 module as the original DM10 Pro, it should work with the additional 3mm washer. The DM10 doesn’t have an offset option for its hi-hat controller calibration settings, so the extra travel distance should create that offset physically. Which is great, because Alesis’s own Pro-X hats (designed for the first Strike Pro kits) are… not great, even after the firmware update enabling their use

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! I'm not gonna lie, I'm not familiar with the DM10, so I'm not 100% sure what kind of hi-hat controller it uses/needs. I assume it's similar to the one used on the Strike so this might work, but that's just a guess.

Then, to be extra sure I replied asking to confirm my understanding that that means it will work in open, closed and half open modes and he again affirmed my understanding. From everything I know from my and others' interactions with him, I have absolutely no reason to think he may have lied to me. Now I just hope he wasn't wrong! LOL Am planning to order mine soon.

      @@JoseLCDiaz I did get them but for a variety of reasons never had an opportunity to try them out. I am in the process of reconfiguring my kit and hope to actually begin playing again soon. Here is what I have learned since my original comment:
      I am still convinced that Kenny is a great guy and totally trustworthy. However, it appears that he was wrong in his answer to my question. Again, I can't answer from firsthand experience (though I might try them out this evening or tomorrow to confirm), but it appears that they are not compatible...definitely now for "full range" of articulations. The pedal type controller native to the DM10 MKII Pro utilizes a very different technology than the Roland VH11 on which the Lemon HHs are based. I believe you can only get open and closed articulations with Lemon + DM10etc.
      It is for that reason (and also to expand beyond the number of channels on the module) that I bought an eDRUMin device, which I plan to implement in the next few days. If you're not familiar with this gadget, Google it. It really is an amazing bit of technology. There are some great reveiws of it on UA-cam.
      Just did a quick check and my understanding is confirmed here: facebook.com/groups/alesisdrums/posts/3599561330299848/?paipv=0&eav=AfYQx7pYPRnlKQGKbdtpIRglwbB_7n9vvSPgI_a6OLCOwqrbiVTaQNUDLiGyEY6A4iM&_rdr

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      I've not used a VH-11 for quite some time so I can't do a direct noise comparison, unfortunately. As I mentioned in this review, the sound of the two pads coming together is a bit louder than one-piece hi-hat solutions and the Lemon pads themselves are a touch louder than Roland's in my experience due to the thinner rubber on top. Whether it's worth getting this over a VH-11 really depends on why you would want to upgrade - is the VH-11 not doing the job well enough? The playing size of this and the VH-11 is the same (12 inches). There is a bit of a difference in feel due to the bottom plate but it's hard to say whether you'll find that worth it or not.

This might work with the VH-12 setting but I don't know for sure as I didn't test it myself. I would imagine you could at least get it working similarly to a VH-11/FD pedal with the washer if you used the FD pedal setting - the VH-11 and the FD-7/FD-8/FD-9 pedals all operate basically the same as far as I know. There won't be any specific settings for dealing with the pads clashing together though, other than the usual threshold etc. Unfortunately I can't confirm any of this myself, it's just my best guess based on what I do know!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      Hey. No, I've not run into any issues on the TD-17, once used with the rubber washer. That could be a trigger settings issue or it might be an instrument volume thing.
      The easiest thing to check is that the instrument volume hasn't accidentally been turned down. You can check this under the Level setting. If it's definitely not this, try another pad in this input and see if the low volume still persists. If it does, try the trigger settings.
      I found the Lemon hats to be "hotter" than Roland cymbals so normally it would be the opposite, but check that you're using the right pad preset and that sensitivity settings are set high enough that your harder hits are going up to the top of the trigger monitor graph (or reaching near to 127). If they're not, you might only be triggering low velocity sounds. If you can't get it to do this, there might be a physical issue with the pad.

      @benson1ification Рік тому

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Hi Luke, thank you so much for the detailed answer - which makes me sound even dumber when I say that the preset was assigned to some BRUSH hi-hat for some reason...changed it to a normal hat and it worked right away.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      I don't think it would be ideal to have a larger pad that overhangs the bottom plate, but I suppose it could possibly work. The main issue with swapping the top pad out at all is that most cymbal pads have chunky jack boxes on them. This gets in the way and stops you from being able to properly close the two pieces (I tried my 13" Yamaha cymbal and a Roland CY-12 and neither would shut properly). The top cymbal of this hi-hat has a thinner, more streamlined jack socket which is located in a better place for this use (like the Roland pads that it's clearly based on).

      I guess it depends whether you want a two piece or one piece hi-hat! You can get more false triggers with a bottom plate, but you get a more satisfying change in response of the stick when the bottom plate pushes on the top (if you value that). Personally I'd probably use this over the VH-11 or VH-10 due to the price and feel.

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Well, that answered my question (VH-10 or this). I actually have the VH-10, but I've found that the closer to an acoustic hihat my eDrum has, the better for me. I know that it is completely not necessary (strictly speaking--i.e. everything can be controlled by an electronic pedal), but somehow, I need the mechanical response--especially if I'm keeping time with my hihat foot--even more so now that I've started playing acoustic drums...
      As always thanks for the excellent review.

      @@stevenreich8623 Maybe some good info for you to know. I just bought a VH-13, which is similar to the lemon HHC12, to upgrade from my VH-11, which is similar to your VH-10. My opinion is that the VH-11 is more predictable, consistent and faster on the open-closed controller side of things. The VH-13 feels a bit more realistic to play on the top but the difference is barely noticeable. I am currently switching between the VH-11 and VH-13 all the time but might to back to the VH-11 and keep the VH-13 as a spare (I do live gigs and like a spare of each component).
      I would only recommend the 2-piece hats design if you want them for the looks. In your case, the Lemon hats have even more disadvantages over the VH-10 like the hotspot and questionable build-quality.
      Long post but I thought this might me useful to you.

      So far they're still working fine, but admittedly I haven't used them extensively over that time. I spent a long time testing a different kit and I also have the VH-14D that I usually use when my Roland modules are set up, so I've only used it the Lemon cymbals now and again with other modules.

    How do you get those tama cymbal mates to stay put on your cymbal rods? My cymbals are resting on threaded rods and no matter what I do they want stay on.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      I have a couple of rods that they just don't seem to hold onto as well, especially if pressure gets exerted from below. But generally they just stay on most stands if I don't over or under tighten them, as long as they're 8mm posts.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому

      I imagine so but I've not tested it myself. The information I can give you is all in the video -
      If you use the 3mm washer, the hi-hat can act like a VH-11 or VH-10.
      If you don't, it will only act like a VH-13.
      So depending on which of these controllers your module supports, you can work out how to use this hi-hat with your module. If you don't know, check what presets are available on it or look in the manual.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +1

      Ok, so if it supports the VH-11, it will have a VH-11 preset and should be able to support this hi-hat, as long as you use the 3mm washer with it.
      Whether or not you think it will be worth swapping your CY-5 & foot controller to the LE-HHC12 is going to come down to personal preference. The actual open/close range will be the same, but you'll have the physical motion of the pad moving on a stand and the change of feel that you get from hitting a pad that's "free" compared to the more solid feel when you push down on the pedal. Some people find that to be worth the upgrade, some people don't! The actual sounds that you get from open to close on the module won't change either.

      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому

      *EDIT* - I probably should have looked in the manual! Apparently it does support the VH-11 hi-hat, so in theory the LE-HHC12 should work with that module as long as you use the washer like I showed in the video for the TD-17.
      Previous reply -
      To be honest, I'm not sure! I *think* it might work with the washer in the way that it works with the TD-17 like that because the VH-10/VH-11 pedals operate the same way that the foot controllers like the FD-8/FD-9 do, but I can't be certain as I don't have a TD-4 module to test it with. I'm not sure if that module has the full range of open/close sounds either.

  • @chezchezchezchez
    @chezchezchezchez Рік тому

    What about TD-9? Works with that?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +2

      If the TD-9 can support the VH-11, this should work with the washer. My guess is that it can as the VH-11 is basically the same as an FD pedal, but I don't have a TD-9 to confirm myself.
