Brilliant and fascinating stuff, as always! Fun fact: The central tower of Lincoln Cathedral was (probably) the tallest structure in the world after its spire was completed, surpassing the Great Pyramid of Giza. Sadly, the spire was destroyed in a storm in 1549.
@@adolflenin4973 I was at the cathedral yesterday and one of the staff said that it was more likely that it was more due to the huge weight of the spire and the lack of foundations that really caused it to topple, with the storm just helping things along a little bit
What a glorious mishmash of styles! Normally I don’t particularly care for Anglo-Norman architecture, but the the surrounds on all three doors on the west front are both beautiful and unique. The crazy vaulting is fantastic! I don’t know who came up with that idea, but it’s so unique. The choir stalls contain the most over the top carvings that I’ve ever seen before in the choir of a cathedral. Are there any other cathedrals that have that degree of carving? I’ve noticed that English cathedrals are all unique in architecture and decor compared to European cathedrals which tend to fit a particular pattern in some basic ways such as having a rose window over the west entrance. Why is that? The Angel Chapel reminds me of Victorian architecture and decor in that just about surface is decorated to the hilt.
I visited Lincoln Cathedral as a child on a school outing and it has always remained the ultimate religious/historical building - nothing else has ever matched the fascination I hold for it. I still have the guide book I bought over sixty years ago.
Thank you. Interesting and informative, and providing useful insight into the stylistic development over these comparatively long periods of construction - terrific stuff :)

people in this country realise how blessed to have such amazing architecture, where else in the world is 1000 year old buildings littered all over its landscape?
Yes I agree and my pet hate is chewing gum stuck to pedestrianised areas When i was young t70's 80's there was campaign called "Keep Britain Tidy" And it work, but now days no ones bothers
Only Italy and Spain have a richer built heritage in Europe, although them both lag Britain regarding the Beautiful industrial and particularly Victorian architecture. From stonehenge, York or lichfield cathedrals to warwick castle, from the Edinburgh new town to Wentworth woodhouse and St pancras station. From the shard to the future. Splendid lesson.
For me the so called "crazy vaults", which Beth defines as "irrationals", are instead the expression of a high mathematical knowledge. They are the precursors of what in music would only be reached centuries after (Bach, for example).
@@abnormallyfunny , This is the cathedral of my city. A new book says that was begun at 1,222. It's a very different gothic, ua-cam.com/video/x2I_6q1RDYw/v-deo.html
Fantastic content, but the pacing is so fast. You move from one point to the next at a speed that’s at odds with the ancient, meditative subject matter. Just a little breathing space to reflect on the weighty points being made, or the beautiful architecture would make this a definite 10/10. Thank you for the great video!
Sadly, not on this trip-though we have in the past. It is glorious. With luck we will be able to visit again and a make a video about it before too long.
If you ever get a chance to visit the Cathedral at Easter Make sure to attend the Paschal vigil on Easter Saturday. The set ice starts a 8pm and is conducted by candlelight in the 1st part It is a time travel experience. But make sure you attend to worship GOD 1st
After spending most of my day studying Jira and foreign languages, I can't say how happy I am to hear about this cathedral, lol. Or about anything that isn't Sprints, project configurations, and burndowns... It was so good, but my mind is gone. 😂😭 Anyway, perhaps it's my diminished capacity, but this place is immediately striking. I love the gradient of colors in the bricks outside, it's so pretty taken together. And I spent some time staring at the awkward portrayal of Adam and Eve... Are they infantilized (i.e. sucking their thumbs)? Why are Eve's breasts shaped like literal balloons? Why is the serpent's head so unfortunately positioned (especially in Adam's case, lol)...? A lot going on there. I'd love to get lost outside again. The eastern end of the church took me away. Every detail was so lovely. I've never been more motivated to get my passport once and for all, lol.
The senior most person on site is the Bishop of Lincoln, but the most senior person in the Church of England, which controls the church, is the Archbishop of Canterbury. The monarch has historically, since Henry VIII, been the head of the Church though there was some change there a few years back.
I wonder if there was controversy and arguments when someone proposed the "crazy" vaulting. I can just imagine the push back by the conservative elders - "No way. That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen." The hip young designer - "It's gonna be cool man, like nobody else has anything like this. It's the 1000's, get with it."
Surprised you didn't mention the old spire that made it the tallest building in the world after the Great Pyramid held that title for thousands of years...
The screen, or western facade is practically identical in every manner to the famous Arch of Ctesiphon, south of Baghdad. It is uncanny to see their photos side by side. How did the Brits knew and copied from that ancient facade from Ctesiphon??

Really wish you guys would have talked about the Lincoln Imp a bit but great video overall, very informative.
Our understanding was that the Imp prefers discretion.
❤ I live 20 minutes from here ❤
It dominates Lincoln now, it must have been awe inspiring in medieval times ..
My Church in the early '80s - I loved it.
At 8:46 there is a picture of the Lincoln Imp seated under the corbel (details on Wikipedia).
glad you noticed!

You can definitely see the roman influence in the western facade, those round arches look like something from the colosseum.

I agree: the reference to Bach hits it on the nose. This vaulting has a daring and expansive rationality which is totally enchanting.

終於看懂了教堂建築, thanks a lot.
I wonder if you could rebuild the spire using modern, lightweight materials that wouldn't put any strain on the tower. It would look amazing.
Copper would be a good choice material for both its looks and structural integrity.

Just a note: "it's" is misused in the captions. "its" is the correct possessive form that should have been used.
I remember looking up at the vaulting as a child expecting to find some sort of symmetry and not being able to make sense of it.
