Invention is as old as human existence, and no country has promoted and thrived on invention more than the United States thanks to its patent system. But is American invention at risk?
Framed around the story of two first-time inventors, Inventing to Nowhere explores the stakes in policy fights over the American innovation economy, with interviews of legendary inventor Dean Kamen, historians, members of Congress and other key players in the effort to keep the country innovating.
For more than 200 years, the U.S. patent system has helped protect and grow ideas. This reverence for intellectual property rights has been a driving force in making the United States an economic superpower. But as the patent-law debate becomes more influenced by special interests, the future of inventors and entrepreneurs is in jeopardy.

Being a full-time inventor for 25 years I am heartened to see the effort, quality and substance of this video. A feel a similarly effective Save-the-Inventor case could be made in a next video which brings to light the rapidly spreading practice of "efficient infringement". Any inventor, or steward of the patent system not aware of this needs to Google-search "efficient infringement". Here' the strategy -- First tactic: ignore all communications from a sole/small entity inventor. Second tactic: when you get a notice having some substance, respond immediately with a Declaratory Judgment ('DC') forcing the inventor to have to wage all battles on the home turf of the Big Co.; Third tactic: immediately assert patent invalidity and tie up the inventor's patent in an IPR (a modified patent reexamination process having a BRI-wielded kill rate as high as 85%) which, if appealed, will take the best years out of the life of the patent(s). It's a story about how the U.S. patent system, in killing as many as 5 out of 6 patents and/or claims thereof, could very easily become essentially an elitists' system -- wherein those who have the $2.5 million for each court-fought battle win, and those who don't (like many sole/small entity inventors) will necessarily lose. Make no mistake, this IS the day when inventors have to now fear that the mere contacting of an entity to inform them--on a legitimate basis--of an unauthorized use, making and/or selling of one's invention, can instantly (via a DC) land you in long drawn-out court battles in one or more far-flung cities--whether you're ready to take the company on or not.

I think the biggest problem is that time to market has changed exponentially with technology, but the patent system can't keep up. We need the protective power of the traditional patent process, but we have to get to market immediately.
I warned about this for years, I warned about this for years and was laughed at, mocked, scoffed now the whole system is destroyed and everyone is going to lose except the corporate tentacled crooks.
Wow. As someone who is contemplating investing the rest of his life on an invention, I'm feeling really uncertain if I want to pursue it or not.
It's been 4 years. Have you done it?
The U.S. Patent Office is the #1 killer of innovation and American ingenuity. I spent 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars before I was able to finally get a patent on a relatively simple invention. Once the examiner rejected my application because when it printed a blank page between the sheets as submitted. He made me resubmit without the blank page. I am NOT making this up.
Meanwhile back at the ranch the Chinese and everyone else are free to rip off my design (I displayed it in public after I got my provisional patent) while we're dicking around for the next two years haggling with the examiner whether a certain letter should be a 12 point font or a 14 point font in my utility app. Fucking ridiculous. The whole point of a patent is to show people how you made something. Who cares about the font size? Took me 5 times submitting my application before I got my patent, and I almost gave up several times. It's like you have to have a patent attorney now, no way around it. That means you have to be wealthy.
We are DOOMED as a country folks, we are NOT GOING TO SURVIVE. The Chinese are kicking our ass in manufacturing, and we deserve it. We've red taped ourselves into oblivion. We don't teach our kids in school how to fix cars or weld or build anything. All our new generation is being taught is gay rights, why they should hate America, and and how to play the victim. Basically we're raising our future generation to be protesters.

This “documentary” succeeded in convincing me of the original intent of the patent system, but did not explain why the PTAB was harmful, nor address chief concerns of small inventors who grow naturally without VC’s, or with investors who support skipping patents. It seems the real issue is a bloated and dysfunctional patent process that nobody is willing to address. We even see a Republican lawmaker saying to spend more on big government. Business processes can be improved in any industry through tools and techniques like Lean Manufacturing, but nobody knows that it’s even possible. Political pushes like this, and the PREVAIL Act, will never get us where we need to be. Instead, politicians need to support creation of a cross-functional team of Lean Manufacturing, industry, PTO employees and stakeholders (startups & big tech) to re-engineer the process itself, from within. Unfortunately, this doesn’t get anyone elected or hire teams of lawyers.
Good video, well done and addresses some real issues from an inventors view point.
Elementary Schools should be geared towards this.
The thing this video seems to completely fail to acknowledge is the cost, both in time and in actual money. Successfully getting a patent can take a very long time, and cost tens of thousands of dollars. But that's not the end. The simple, unfortunate fact of the matter is that even if you have that patent you need to be able to actually defend it. They don't assign you a free patent lawyer when you get one, and if you don't have the resources to defend it when the time comes then you've effectively spent a lot of money to achieve absolutely nothing.

Having watched this video, and having ideas for - products & designs, I find myself
wondering "why" Presiden Barack Obama has "reformed" the patent system to with
faster (to market patents) and limitations that actually make the process easier with
limits! These limits may "appear" to be benefitial, however, close examination shows
these stipulations imposed - limit/prevent the very small inventors from pursuing any
real (quality) types products. Commercial things found everywhere; eBay, QVC, Home Shopping Network, are prevalent. NOT the things/products that really make a diiference.
The point of emphasis on the high value of patents is well put. What could use clarification is how the new legislation is written and presumably implemented per it's current terminology. PLEASE produce a shorter, more clear video outlining exactly what is proposed to change. THEN follow with the direct and indirect impact of said changes. The audience can then conclude on their own potential intentions of the authors of this dangerous legislation. Interviews and quotes are great supplements to the purpose, but cold straight, common-language presentation of the issue at hand is needed in a less daunting 10-12 min. video. Completely missing the point of the current serious problems with Patent Trolls, this "Documentary" makes me wonder if it was funded by trial lawyers. Patent Trolls are causing a frenzy of illegitimate claims against small technology start ups. Not products, but software and ideas as simple as hyperlink clicks. These attorneys are taking advantage of the system to rob new start ups and extort more than half a trillion dollars from little guys, and mom n pop shops. Not to mention, buying off an entire Court District in Marshall, TX, the lawyers filing the lawsuits are the Judges own sons, and jury is bought out to make sure that this tiny town can capitalize on robbing inventors and small business owners.

I would love to see the comments of someone who can't afford their medication. The same medication that they could purchase last week. Things like that , i believe are more of a threat.

Now, the only way to successfully grow a company with a unique product is to partner with an individual or group that has deep experience and success in licensing you IP to corporations who will steal your ideas if they can and pay you for the use of your inventions only if they must. These large companies would like you to think that those individuals and groups who force them to compensate inventors are "patent trolls". The real trolls are the large companies.

Tort Reform, Protectionism. are economic subject not Patent subject. Courts can judge these complaints in realm of percentage gain or loss the result here of this video's intent.

I have been in the patent business starting in nineteen ninety-eight. I have prosecuted three patents on my own behalf. This video takes a turn near the end when inaccurate statements are made by that bicycle start-up that by said could lose their licensing from original inventor. First of all, Chinese National Patent has to be secured and American Patentsbare only enforceable in America. Because the world is smaller because mainly of improve global shipping procedures their license exclusive.
If the inventors only had a US patent, any other country is free to make, use, and sell the invention. But the other countries cannot import it into the US.
I’m not sure those 2 inventors understood that. But they certsinly should have.

The patent office doesn't enforce anything but too many assume that is it's job and function. Enforcement of law is, attorney's job. The logic of the people in this video followed to it's end conclusion winds up as fascism. It's dangerous and sickening.

pretty sure the rest of the world is the way it is because of patents. how can they afford to build out stuff when they have to comply with patents? the richest nations in the world got that wway because we make everyone else have to buy our stuff.

One person could build a product, then another could expand it, then another may add to it until we have a Great product. Why keep it all to yourself?
It seems that the more money a corporation has, the more it just HAS to have. The more money a person has, the more they worry about it. Patents keep us apart and help cause greed. These folks with billions, and more...... do not care for others except their family, and friends.
Why should Any human being have more than another? If we all worked together, we could be in a Golden age. My view.
