So true. My mother in law gave me a book "100 essential crochet stitches" by Val Pierce. It's written in UK terms but someone goofed and wrote the Cranesbill Square in US terms. I was trying to make the square as the instructions were written via UK terms but it looked so terrible I looked it up on UA-cam.
Loved this video! Makes me feel "normal" when someone with your skills has trouble reading a vintage pattern too! l so enjoy your channel. You make me think I can do anything. I admire your courage 🦁
LOL...I tried screaming knowing you couldn't hear me but here I sat yelling "in the 8 ch SPACE! LoL That last bit stumped me too. Looking at picture it looks like they joined to the bar instead of next dtr...but then said to skip 10 sc...and sc in between the bars (according to picture) but I couldn't figure out how they skipped 10 sc anywhere and still created those petals. I gave up there too. I think that row was incomplete or miswritten.
Someone needs to rewrite the pattern to be correct... looks like there was a skip 4 sc dtr in next sc chain 5 then sc in top of bar around... Just what I can gather from the picture. I'd have to sit and do the pattern myself to figure it out and I am in the middle of another project atm. lol
Hi Corrina, I think I have figured it out..Row8 should read : * ch5, dtr in first stitch in bar, ch5, trb in 5 st of bar, ch 5, HTC ,ch5, trp in 5 st down, ch5, dtr in last st, ch 5, sk 10 sc, SC in 5 st*
This is what I see from the picture as well, except instead of where you said "HTC" I would have said "sc (or some kind of connecting stitch) in top/end of bar." What is HTC?
I was just going to say that because then she would be able to look to the comments possibly for help 😂 maybe alive mystery pattern for milestone on UA-cam?
A live would be great! We’d have to fill the time on the parts she normally cuts out with chat or be following along which would also be fun. Then as with her viewer mystery submissions, can send pics after. I always wonder how much total time is spent on these patterns.
Double treble into the sc stem then ch 5 and sc on top center stem. Your first DTC is the lowest vein in the two veins per outer petal with vein (not open petals) 😊
But it says " tr in next dtr, skip 10 sc, 5sc in next 5 sc" ... this makes no sense if working on the bar as the bar only has 11 sc , im still lost LOL
@@justvintagecrochetif you make your sc into the back bumps in the previous round, then you'd be able to crochet into both sides of the bar. So first dtr is in chain below the last sc on the bar. I think the next bit is supposed to be a dtr in the chain at the base of the sixth sc. Maybe the person wrote "6th" but had bad penmanship 😂 and the person typing it up thought it was "dtr"
No apologies needed, you ROCK!❤. You made me laugh out loud, great way to start the day! I, too, could not understand Row 8…….your channel is the best! 🌻🌻🌻🌻
From looking at the picture it seems to me you should attach the dtr to the forth stitch on that ( 8 stich leg) chain four dtr forth stitch (end of the leg) chain four dtr forth stitch down the other side and continue on around. Try this and see if it helps if it does I would love to see you finish it up on another video. Good luck and love watching you.
@@justvintagecrochetyou have to ignore the "tr in next dtr". Do what Sandra says and the instructions make sense again when you get to the base of the bar. Make your dtr in the base stitch of the bar on the left (mirroring what you did on the right side), skip 10 stitches, do 5sc and then the sequence starts again. You just have to replace "tr in next dtr" with all of the leaf procedure. I just did it a little differently than Sandra. I did the first bit as the pattern says, ch5, dtr in the first stitch of the bar and then I did ch5, tr in the 5th stitch after, ch 5, sc in the top of the bar on the left side and then mirrored it on the way down. It's looking fine.
Stubbornness is not necessarily a bad thing sometimes. Tenacity is a fine word, but it's not quite the same thing. Having arrived at that round, my mother would realize the pattern wasn't going to help (I'm thinking there's a typo in there), and she would have thrown the pattern away and recreated what she saw in the picture. I gave up right when you did, I couldn't do what Mom would have done. Incidentally, she was born in 1933, and she would have been 90 years old yesterday.
Sometimes I think a few of these old patterns were written by monkeys who were gotten drunk and then given a crochet hook and a pen. I found your channel just recently while searching for new crochet techniques, and I've really been enjoying it. Nice to know I'm not the only person who sometimes can't comprehend a pattern!
This is a great video. It just goes to show that we make what we think the pattern says & we come out with totally something different. It happens to a lot of us. No harm, no foul. I thought you were doing a great job.
It's beautiful ❤, can't win them all Corrina, I have been crocheting 50 years and it had me whooped. It's a pretty pattern but I think the printed instructions had mistakes in it. 😊
Valiant effort!!! I knew you would eventually figure out the 1st snafu but the 2nd one was a fubar. Someone failed to do beta testing before the release of this pattern. Was beta testing even a thing in 1933??? Obviously, it should have been. Oh well, as the saying goes, “You can’t win ‘em all”. Look forward to the next time. ❤❤ Oh your Just Corinna just dropped so I’m going to watch you go to the post office. See ya there. 😂
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for getting me into crochet! These mystery videos showed up in my algorithm a couple of weeks ago and it was so fun that I had to give it a try. I'm still learning, but a couple weeks in, I feel like I'm hooked. :D

I love your on screen commentary as you worked through your misunderstanding! 😂😂😂 It’s totally you breaking the 4th (5th?) wall. Haven’t seen many people do that but it really adds another layer.

Well done Corina for getting that far with this mystery pattern. I would be throwing the towel in by the forth row. Don't let the negative Nancy's get you down. Ps I hope any one called Nancy will forgive the use of their name, I just couldn't think of another name to use. Nancy's are wonderful people. 🦸♀
Corinna, that pattern made my eyes cross. You did your best at trying to figure it out. If I ever try it I will let you know and will share my work with you.
Wow Corinna, you are very awsome...again a new video! Love it. Curios to see what comes up, commenting ad 1 minute in. I was questioning why the hoops have to bee in the chain and not arround...lol Some times there are to many trees in the forest...lol... Believe meI have those moments as well...yesterday I went to see a movie with a friend, they now have drinking stations so you get a cup and fill it yourself. I was standing there an try to ffingering out how it works. My friend sayd "you have to press the silver button" so I pressed it. Nothing happend. So she repeated telling me to push the silver button. Took me a while before I noted I have to hold pressed to fill my cup 🤦♀️ clear face palm moment, BUT we had a great lough.
I never got into crochet, I was drawn more to embroidery, but my mother does it all. I find it fascinating and I LOVE these mystery patterns! I wish I could help. I will share your video with my people, maybe they will know.🤓
Well, like that meme says, "Be like a dog. If you can't eat it, pee on it." 🤣😂 Life is too hard to be stuck on something like this. You could just wing it and do what makes you happy, then throw the instructions away like garbage. That's the nice thing about creating things yourself . . . there is always a measure of creative rights involved whenever you want to invoke it. 😂
I think it's missing an entire instruction there! It looks like you are meant to do dtr, ch 5, tr, ch 5, possibly sl st to top of bar, ch5 tr, ch5 dtr, and then continue with the sc. If I had any yarn smaller than worsted to hand, i would try it out for ya!
I’m slowly getting to know the stitches and terminology of crochet, being primarily a knitter for many years. I would love a walk through of the crochet graph patterns on how to read them. Not sure if anyone else would be interested.
omg bless your heart!!! this was a wild pattern and honestly at first i thought it was gonna be a hair net or bonnet or something as for the last row… it looks like you might be creating the veins of each of those leaves? so maybe skip a few (5?) single crochets in the bar and then do your treble crochet into the next sc. and i guess next after that would be to make the “frame” for the top of that leaf? i’ll give this a try when i get the chance and let you know if my guess works out great video!!!!! whoever wrote this pattern is a real bastard 😒
Maybe count up the bar, the amount of stitches that would be considered a dtr and continue that way. Just a thought, but I don’t know.. you do a fantastic job with these.. ❤❤
Oh the loading bar and countdown timer 😂😂😂 hilarious! And yes i was " dont they mean round the chain?" But ur waaaay better at crochet than me so i assumed i was wrong! In ur defence the pattern didnt say around the chain did it!
Hi Corrina! 11 minutes in and I'm guessing it was supposed to be a snood. Scheepjes Catona is nice yarn. I am on a Mochila crochet group, and many people use it to make mochila bags.
You are always amazing at deciphering these and I really do think there’s some sort of transcription error or something in this one. I just want to say thank you for holding up the instructions at the end and inviting others to try because I am just obsessed with the pictured end result and really want to see if I can manage to figure it out! It will probably take me some time as I am not a super fast crocheter like you and I’ve only worked a little with thread weight so far but I want to try so badly! So thank you!
I'm new to crochet but I've been sewing for years, and it's times like these the sewing community says "step away from the machine and go to bed" I feel for ya, it is fun to watch you work it out though
I think that pattern is gorgeous but definitely a typo error in the pattern Corinna, you did a great job darlin, not always easy to interpret these old patterns❤ I do love your vids❤❤🇦🇺
Oh, this was refreshing to watch. I have such a hard time with written patterns. I'm hopeless without photos. To watch someone with your level of skill getting a bit frustrated is nothing but endearing.
ROFL. Threw your project into a box of my own mysteries. They will be repurposed one day, or clarity will overtake me, whichever comes first. This is the most instructional crochet video one could want. Love and admiration coming your way.
Hey there! Long time crocheter, and I've been studying the picture. I also write crochet patterns, so I THINK I know what they did. I totally do not understand the pattern as written either, but I can deduce a couple of things. To me, I think what you did in the beginning is correct. Chain 5, then dtr into the first stitch of the bar. Then it looks like you chain 5 again, and tr into the 5th stitch in the bar. Then chain 5, then sc at the top of the bar. Then you reverse it to mirror the right side of the bar until you get back to the bottom. Then you chain 5, skip 5 sc's, sc in the next 5 stitches, then start the process all over again. Looking at the next round of this pattern, it actually makes sense, and seems to set you up perfectly. Whoever wrote the original pattern made serious mistakes in round 8. There MAY also be either a mistake in round 9, or it's possible the instructions are incomplete. I could figure it out, if I actually worked the pattern and studied it for a while. If you decide to come back to the pattern, I hope this helps!
It reminds me of a flower poncho I did recently. Once the flower looking thing was done you had to square it up. Then you made a mess of them and joined them sorta similar to granny squares! But it was really stringy looking like this one! It came out beautiful though!😀
I wonder if it’s counting the first set of chains as one side of the bar and then the sc you put into it as the other side of the bar, so skipping 10 sc would be 5 stitch holes on one side of the work and then 5 stitch holes on the other side and work a tr in the next stitch. Then chain 5 and dtr in the bottom of the bar.
This one was frustrating because in my opinion the pattern is written poorly. Not just vague, but missing instructions and I would bet money there was a character limit or something! But I do love the "NO!" and "loading..." graphics you added. Gave me a good chuckle 😄
That was a puzzle ones you lost a piece it's hard to continue. ☺You did great trying. I am still try to figure it out it's so much fun it keep my brain working even more. Hugs!
Don’t feel silly! My brain was stuck too. The only other way I was thinking was how many times three goes into eight. But that ruffle really was pretty.
This was so hysterical! I laughed so hard as you just kept at it!! What a trooper you are!! You are amazing!! I know I would have given up once it said “38 chains”. 😂 But you kept going. And you were RIGHT! Amazing Corrina. Simply amazing!
I'm too tired to read all of the comments, so someone may have already thought of this. In my opinion (from that different point of view), the non-crocheting robot that typed this pattern shouldn't have included the "tr in the next dtr, ch 5" at all! I may be wrong, but I think that if you'd ignored that part, ch 5, skipped 10 sc & tr in next ch, you'd have nailed it. That would have created the veins of the "leaves". The next round would have placed little scallops around the chain spaces going up and down the bars. It is a beautiful doily! I think you did a great job on this little mystery!
I understand your frustration at this one. It really seems to make no sense. Don't worry, you did great until then and it just happens that we all get stuck sometimes.
I knew you would get it, but I was happy for the 'skip 5 sec' button so I didn't have to take on your stress while you figured it out. I've been crocheting for 60 years and in every pattern there's always a challenge. Love you and your videos! Do you need a grandmother?
I am a crocheter and knitter, mainly crochet, but I just came across your channel via one of your mystery pattern videos and I just have to say I am enthralled and intrigued by this concept. I love it so much. I've subscribed and I have a feeling I'm going to be obsessed!😂😊
You did good Arizona.... I would have had to get the picture right after the Magic Ring.... don't be hard on yourself. You do such amazing work and should always be proud of how you teach and entertain your followers.
Sometimes the verbiage on old patterns are just wrong. I wonder how many times a magazine got a hand written pattern they could barely read and just put the word they thought fit but it changes the entire pattern those few changed words.
Just wanted to let you know that you can see through the marker where you have blocked over the word for what the project is. I think covering it with a sticker or paper would work better maybe? But thank you for your awesome videos! I really love watching and crocheting along with you ❤️
Thank you so much for watching! Please hit the " Like" button above if you did like the pattern and Subscribe for Tutorials like this and more! :)
I can't tell you how weird it is to see the 1970s crochet considered "vintage." That was when I was first a grown-up! It was just yesterday!

no mistakes in this pattern just bad writing ^^

Glad it's not going to be another Christmas themed one as there everywhere on UA-cam nearly all crochet channel's are doing it
Oh man, I got like 15 Christmas Videos coming up between now and new years!!!!
Yeah, I'm just kidding LOL
That's crazy! It looks like they skipped a whole row...I can't figure it out either.
I think that pattern is gorgeous but definitely a typo error in the pattern Corinna, you did a great job darlin, not always easy to interpret these old patterns❤ I do love your vids❤❤🇦🇺
WOW! Now that's a surprise ending! 🙈🙉🙊
LOVE THAT OOOOOH! the brain fart finally happened
I’m getting big asmr vibes from your lovely nails clicking on the hook😊
I’m glad you finally heard me lol😅😊
Just a side note: I love your nails
Also, I love this series, it's nice to sit and crochet and watch you figuring out the pattern makes me smile
Oh thank you!
I just recently found your channel and I love it. Thank you. I love that you do all these vintage patterns. Thank you
That was a puzzle ones you lost a piece it's hard to continue. ☺You did great trying. I am still try to figure it out it's so much fun it keep my brain working even more. Hugs!
Good morning 🧶☕ awesome
Don’t feel silly! My brain was stuck too. The only other way I was thinking was how many times three goes into eight.
But that ruffle really was pretty.
Lol a duster!!! 😂
This was so hysterical! I laughed so hard as you just kept at it!! What a trooper you are!! You are amazing!!
I know I would have given up once it said “38 chains”. 😂 But you kept going. And you were RIGHT! Amazing Corrina. Simply amazing!
Thank you so much!!
I think you were on the right way! rise upi the bar. I love your channel and your work! Greets from G
Your videos are making me want to go find my crochet hooks!
Always entertaining to watch,, even gets me going,, working on the little crochet tree right now.👍❤️🫂😊
I am a crocheter and knitter, mainly crochet, but I just came across your channel via one of your mystery pattern videos and I just have to say I am enthralled and intrigued by this concept. I love it so much. I've subscribed and I have a feeling I'm going to be obsessed!😂😊
Oh no I am late. Yeah mystery. Corinna you rock.
You did good Arizona.... I would have had to get the picture right after the Magic Ring.... don't be hard on yourself. You do such amazing work and should always be proud of how you teach and entertain your followers.
Sometimes the verbiage on old patterns are just wrong. I wonder how many times a magazine got a hand written pattern they could barely read and just put the word they thought fit but it changes the entire pattern those few changed words.
wow this one confused me so i can sympathis you did your best
You did the best you could and got so far by taking the errors in stride. You are doing great!
Thank you!
what a roller coaster that was🤯
Just wanted to let you know that you can see through the marker where you have blocked over the word for what the project is. I think covering it with a sticker or paper would work better maybe?
But thank you for your awesome videos! I really love watching and crocheting along with you ❤️
