A Foggy Morning on Ilford HP5 Medium Format Film

- I'm starting a vlog to bring back the original format that made me enjoy making UA-cam videos; low production quality and slightly less low quality photos. In this first one I go out to shoot some medium format Ilford HP5 on a foggy morning with my Mamiya 7 to follow up on my new years resolution, organize the chaos that is my studio and also share some new work.

The shutter sound to cover the sh*t bomb was probably the most god tier editing maneuver I've ever seen
Your videos always have a meaningful insight not just in photography, but as a person who really loves what he’s doing.
Thank you :')
I’ve been following Willem’s channel for two years now, and I’m so proud of him for evolving and growing not only his channel, but also his photography skills. Congrats in having your work posted on the LA Times!
(Also: Willem, if you’re reading this I wanted to say that, I can’t thank you enough for getting me into photography, and helping me to learn more about it.)
Thank you for the kind words! Means a lot
Note to self: Don’t complain about paying $3.29 a gallon for gas in Ohio. Really dig the moody atmosphere of that fog.
Ive seen upwards of 6 in LA
@@WillemVerb £6-7 in UK.... around 10USD. £1.45 per litre. Mind you, we do have a lot of very corrupt politicians
@@davidellinsworth22 how do we have corrupt politics 😭😭
@Owanneke Yikes

You seem a lot more comfortable in this video. The energy feels more real. What a pleasant video
That beautiful early morning lighting looks amazing. 300zx at 1:54 looks kool too!!
"HP5 or not, I'm always proud of you!"
- Matt Day (I guess)
Just keep an eye on the cardboard since it’s not acid free (cardboard is acidic) and not archival. That’s why those other storage boxes you used are expensive because they are archival and won’t ruin prints and artwork due to being acid free.
He could buy acid free cardboard for comics and use it on top and the bottom of the box, and between prints, I don't know how expensive they are in te us, but where I live I pay like 22USD for 150 acid free cardboard sheets
@@Dansback21 agreed, its worth the extra money in the long-run
how is nobody talking about his cat!!! cutest moment ever
3:19 that Toyota model F is so sick! Lovely video
I spent a summer on the UC Santa Cruz campus and I could never get use to seeing that wall of fog roll in every morning and evening. Very different from where I'm from. Love the ethereal shots!
B&W with the fog and the Rolls Royce with the palm tree looks just so good. Congrats to your work spread in LA times!
I see you reppin' for the PUTS at 5:12! O.S.T. is one of my favorite albums of all time. RIP to Double K!
This series should be called ‘Get out N Get bangers’
Just finished the video and my God. Amazing. Love to see you going to back to the roots. Also shoutout to ally for waking you up. That pic with the cactus... amazing
Nice work! Comission from the LA Times is great work to pick up. I'd love to see you put some rolls through a Bronica ETRSi. Curious to see how you'd get on with it.
Gyaaahh Willem + Fog needs to become a regular thing please🥺
"Sincerly", gotta love this "San Fracisco" cardboard box label :D
new favourite youtuber, whole vibe and produced work is something i truly aspire to be
Ilford is undefeated
more of this please, it feels so raw and transparent with what you do everyday.
This vid reminds me of the good old days
+3 I loved the LA times assignment work. Not only bc you were given no direction and you came back with some amazing compositions, but you got paid to go have fun! Win
This video has been my favorite in a long time.
Let’s gooo happy Monday y’all!!

These black and white foggy shots are soo god, tight man!
Can't wait to see more Willem in print! Congrats on the LA Times!!
4.69 is a steal in LA 😮💨
Really happy you're taking away some production value from your videos. I think just DIYing your yt videos and being less concerned with cinematography has brought back the energy your older videos had. I appreciate your high production value videos immensely, but I'm also stoked to see more of this again
la times work had such nice light + textures
Always so stoked to see a new video by you, pop up on my feed!
Thanks!
Such a fun one to watch
Your videos just hit different, Thanks man!
You're LA Times work looks phenomenal man. Thanks for the inspiration!
Amazing as always.
Hey, Willem!
Sorry about the long comment in advance. :)
I’m a huge fan of your work and look up to you in so many ways. I’ve learned a lot from your videos please keep up the good work! Considering you are a big inspiration for many of us myself included, i would love to watch a video and hear about your journey and how you got to where you are. Things you’ve learned and how you started as a beginner and what you’ve learned and how you learned everything and level of difficulty, challenges you’ve faced…etc. I’m an art/ photography enthusiast and mainly have a hobby of learning about different formats of photography both film and digital. But more film. As well as fun projects that you can do such as your zines. Would love your input and to learn how to make a career out of this hobby. A video about this would be very much appreciated and helpful because you truly are an inspiration and motivation source. Hearing your full story could really help.
Thank you.
Let’s goooo bringin da format back
these photos are incredible
As always Willem, love the videos and the photographs.
love this vlog format, i started watching you back when you made these vlogs in coney island- loved this episode, your personality came out more here and i love it!! ☺

Recently bought 40 rolls of hp5. Love what you've done and it makes me so happy to see what you did. Fucking love your work. You're what got me in film again. 30+ cameras and I'm loving it
I was walking around in LA from 1/26 to 1/31 shooting downtown. it was fun, but I didn't have a car so it was mostly on foot around skidrow.
Cool video WIllem. Nice that you have a savvy girlfriend that knew to wake you up for some good shooting light. Thanks Allison!!!
Might start organizing my darkroom prints in Dominos pizza boxes (new or lightly used). Ty for idea sir Willem.
Also these pics turned out great!
Love the more casual type videos, keep it up

Great cozy video! Congratulations on working with the LA Times!
Yo did you really take the time to sync you saying "Print File" @ 5:39 - love it haha
need more content like this !!
Shoutout Jacob!
Just some food for thought. Gawain Weaver writes in his book, "A GUIDE to Fiber-Base Gelatin Silver Print Condition and that Deterioration" that:
Poor-quality storage materials can also be harmful to gelatin silver prints. If possible,
prints should be stored in photographically inert enclosure materials such as 100% cotton rag or 100% alpha cellulose fibers. If a storage material has passed the Photographic Activity Test (PAT), a very stringent testing method, you can be assured that it will not harm the silver image or cause staining of the gelatin. (p. 20)
Weaver's guide is a short read. It's worth checking out.
let’s go i love me some CLASSIC willem vanderbilt
WHO???
@@WillemVerb hey man i just work here
The LA Times work is stunning!!
+2 for the girl waking you up for good light. Clutch
Wow those images for the LA Times are insane!
I love your studio !!
Ey congrats on the LA Times gig. That's awesome!
random comment: I don't wanna seem creepy, but I just wanted to mention that you always come across as a super layed back guy who really loves what he is doing. I think you would be the type of person who is super fun to be around, to just grab a beer with and just talk about stuff and take something meaningful out of that conversation. And apart from all the Inspiration I can take from your videos on a creative level, I also feel like you've gotten so good at the storytelling and "hosting" aspect, which is part of making these videos and that really enhances the experience of watching your content.
Holy shit, those California gas prices... I paid a little more than $3.80 a gallon in WA just this week and I was pissed.
About those paper boxes for organizing your prints and negatives: be REALLY careful with humidity levels in that room. That paper/cardboard material easily attracts vermin/bugs of all sorts quickly, also it's prone to fungus/mold growth. It's not a great long term solution for something that valuable!
It's great to watch your career as an artist grow on UA-cam.
Loved this !
love your photos!
love the fog vibe bro
I’m currently shooting Iflord HP5 and Delta 400 for my film class and I gotta say, Delta 400 is very nice
Between these videos and watching vuhlandes I really want to get a film camera lol I mean I have a canon 60d but there’s nothing like film, it’s just so dreamy
The cat arm-touch and snuggle 😭
Can you recommend any videos on how to use the built in light meter on a cannon AE1. Not sure what it really means or how to read it and adjust and could use some help
You should dev shoot more black and white, they look amazing
LOVE YOUR VIDEO!
Thats love right there man! Lady telling you literally, GO FUCKING TAKE SOME PHOTOS! So awesome. Great video again man!
Really enjoyed the video, Willem. I like the focus on B&W. Incidentally, I'm also cleaning up the mess that is my negative storage. What is the product number for the Uline mailing boxes you are using? I want to order some as well. I went to their site and there are many options for dimensions. Thanks!
Glad to see these vlogs back man! 🙌🏼
That's my lab in LA too!
7:54 San Fracisco? 😂
LA Times work was beautiful, congrats!
Also, San Francisco was spelt wrong :D
Great Video!! Makes me wanna go out and Shoot :)
Willem hit them boxes like a pizza shop! But I cant hate a bit when saving $18 per.
