  • Back to ancient America. Utah. A little known site called the Butler Wash Ruins and some nearby ruins along Comb Ridge, a pretty amazing geological feature. Some extensive Petroglyphs..(i say Pictographs by mistake)...some depicting Kachinas(?) Google Earth is really cool here....Happy Easter to those recognizing the Holiday..

I call these Pictographs. They are Petroglyphs. (it was early) here is a video from the area and today's earlier video.

I think in this vid you actually showed both, as I understand the terms. Granted, most of them looked to be petroglyphs (carved or etched) but some...the hand prints for example... looked to be painted & therefore technically pictographs. You thought you were wrong once, but you were mistaken. Haha! Interesting place, indeed. Thanks, Chuck!

Hi, I was born and raised near this area, outside Moab, Utah. My Dad was in the Drilling industry and often drilled for oil or natural gas as well as exploratory holes looking for uranium in this general area. In the 60's, 70's and 80's. We often went to work with him during the summer and we would see so many of these sites along the way to a drill location out in the middle of nowhere!. It is beautiful there. My Dad loved Geology and would point out the different formations and strata to us. When we came upon a site like these, we were taught to look but never touch. My Dad explained these were real people who lived in these places and to respect them. He taught us to NEVER desecrate these sites or dig for relics because these people who lived in the ruins would not do such things to our homesteads or graves... I look back on it now and realize that everyone I knew was respectful to ancient sites back then, but the government came in and made laws against us having access to many of these sites.... For no reason... Now people are against drilling and mining because it destroys the scenery.... But those people are the ones who cared for these places before there was even a law telling them They had to.... My hometown of Moab, Utah has been ruined by these crazy laws that so called environmentalists have pushed. It isn't even enjoyable to go home for a visit anymore... Thanks for uploading this video. It brought back great memories! There are many great sites in the mountain range called the "Bookcliffs" NE of Moab. I love looking for ruins with Google Earth! Check out the canyons of the Dolores River in SW Colorado. There are many that have no visible trails or roads to them... Also on the Ute Mountain. I sometimes get stuck on Google Earth for hours just looking for ruins and my family have to cook their own dinner! Haha haha!

First visited these ruins in the late 70's on my first motorcycle tour of the "Grand Circle" region. One of the most enchanting cliff dwelling locations I've ever seen and so close to Cedar Mesa with its Grand Gulch Primitive Area, home of an amazing number of ruins.

I live in Utah and went down to Butler Wash 22 years ago. I cant imagine what it looks like now after being picked over the last 2 decades. There were places down by the wash where it looked like pottery was made. Broken pieces everywhere. It is a cool place to see. Just hope the land management agency is helping preserve the places.

Great video! We have camped south of there where that rift meets the San Juan river. There’s a campsite there called Sand Island and it has a huge petroglyph panel right there in the campground. Also quite a few ruins. It’s great for those that can’t hike. Thank you for the interesting videos.

Love my home state of Utah- there are so many fascinating spots, many of which I am yet to see. I’ll have to check this one out when I pass through the area next time. Keep safe, Chuck!
Edit: I have been past here a couple time in the last year when I made work stops in Blanding. I will absolutely stop in next time I get the chance. I like to drive the road from Blanding to Hanksville (Bicentennial Highway). Absolutely stunning landscape.

There is a symbol that you can find throughout Egypt, but I don't remember the name. You can find it holding up the end of the Dendera Lightbulb. The symbols above and to the side of some of the figure's heads reminds me of it.

Went there back in the 1970s,hasn’t much changed, but I can still see that it has. I’ve always wanted to find a place like this To buy. And make it a home! I live in Rural America now..but ,the city keeps just moving closer to me! I probably will have to go to a different country to live some where like that. Fascinating though, thank you for sharing. And bringing back memories, from the 1970s. I helped build a mission on an Native American reservation back in the 70s close to there! To be honest I didn’t want to leave. The people were a lot better company than where I went back to. Just stayed there a month! The people were so wonderful. And the food was absolutely amazing. We had to go 15 miles to get water at a government water area. To get drinking water To bring back, on a big old flatbed truck with two giant plastic government containers probably held about 500 gallons each! But we had so much fun going there and back! Singing and laughing the whole time. That was just a little snippet of my experience of a one-month experience, among wonderful people. Hope someday I can go back, just to help them again! Or just visit! And bring gifts!! Thanks again for the flashback. I’m an old man now. But I still have that wonderful memory.

Fascinating. Imagine having abundant water supply in front of your cave. And the pools. The land doesn't look very good for agriculture. Maybe back then there were many wild animals roaming nearby. And of course fish, so no growing needed.

For an interesting alternative interpretation of the rock art, see the Electric Universe. The Lizard man looks as though he was inspired by the staggered man, but since he is missing the two dots, one on either side of the middle of the figure, he is most likely merely a derivative. Near as I can figure, the massive electric storm that so marked this whole area would have taken place before these people were there, since if it was the other way around they would almost certainly been all killed. The horned snake is of course an obvious connection to events in the sky that are not apparent today, as similar figures are all over the world.

Interesting art on the walls, but does all art have to mean something? Some art is practicing techniques, some could be art for the fun of it, some could be different styles of expression. Certainly most is expressing something valid to the culture at the time but there are people now just making art for entertainment, and why would it be any different then as compared to now? Keep up the great work Charles!

We must always keep in mind that there was nothing on TV back then and people like to keep busy so some of the art work may have been busy work. Busy work with significant themes probably, but busy work nonetheless. With this global pandemic caused self-isolation I think we are already seeing signs of busy work all over the internet, this enjoyably informative video is not an example of that of course but yeah. People like to keep busy. Thank you for making videos!

Yeah, I've been there. Typical cliff dwellings found all the way to Colorado. One can argue that the overhangs make good roofs. Maybe. I've heard other speculate they were hiding - from aircraft above. Some believe high tech was here in the past. Nazca Lines, Pyramids, Baalbek....do you reckon those were built by dudes in loincloths with copper hammers? Polygonal walls found the world over - just coincidence? The vimana of India (not to mention some fantastic "temples") are just fiction by dumb, proto man?
