- A caller named John argues that the existence of God is self-evident. He claims God is an infinite, self-forming conscious being that was once chaotic but became orderly outside of time. Matt and Jimmy challenge these claims, questioning how anything could change states or self-organize without time.
John asserts he is operating at a higher level of consciousness than the hosts. The hosts point out flaws in John's reasoning and knowledge. The call ends abruptly when Jimmy recognizes John's voice and realize he was previously banned from the show for offensive behavior.

We legitimately should have courses in public schools on critical thinking, and the first lesson should go something like: "Class, can anyone tell me how many stars there are in our entire universe?"
Allow everyone to throw out their guesses, but we all know that there is really only one correct answer: "I don't know."
This is huge. Most people who have grown up in our current educational system still do not realize that "I don't know" isn't only a valid answer, but sometimes it truly is the only answer. Yes, we can likely find out the answer to many things we don't currently know, but the thing is is that we don't currently know just about infinite things about the world we live in. I think it is important to drill this lesson in to people, and it's a good foundation for critical thought because it encourages you to start with a position where you won't be incorrect, but also allow you to modify your answer when presented with adequate information to change your stance to a better answer than "I don't know."
You know the owners of the USA don't want an educated public, yes? Much easier to control people when they uneducated and ignorant.

Yes, human ignorance is profound but, we know a lot more than we did before, and so the god's of the gaps get smaller and smaller. Not only do we know more, but at least as scientific knowledge is concerned, we know what confidence level we can put on that information. We try to control for systematic and measurement errors, bias, etc. None of this is available to theologians, at least to any significant degree. I suppose they could falsify something in a holy text by exegesis-perhaps a new manuscript comes to light, and they found out that a previous translation of the bible was wrong. But generally, god or certain other tenets of faith are taken as "givens", and all argument stems from this". rarely do they start off from a proposition that god may not exist, and it is usually something stupid like "Pascal's Wager", which is intentionally or unintentionally, intellectually dishonest. A card trick.
ALL creator-god arguments are fallacious, unless or until some demonstration of that god is made. "God, ergo trees" Is meaningless, and a causality fallacy. Humans ergo chairs is NOT fallacious, because humans exist and the fact that humans can make chairs have both been demonstrated. E.T, ergo chair is not necessarily fallacious, depending on whether we can find ET with the capacity to make chairs. But until the "carpenter ET" is found, then "ET, ergo" chair is fallacious also. Of course, even if we find 'carpenter ET", he/her/it is only a potential candidate. If ET had never visited earth, then ET as a candidate is extinguished. You could go weird and state that ET sent the chair here, but it is tenuous.

I really feel like he was unto something though, it also felt like Jimmy realized this and revealed that he was banned because they (Jimmy and Matt) were struggling to formulate counter arguments.

@@themadmanescaped1 The idea that humans are unable to fully comprehend the origins of the universe is a plausible argument. What the caller was trying to explain is that we are bound by time, space and thus cannot possibly understand anything that is outside of those at least not entirely. Some of us may be more aware or conscious than others with regards to realities that are simply not temporal. From what is immediately apparent our bodies have a beginning and an end but what doesn't is energy. This is the aspect of our being that can help us to begin to fathom things that are eternal. All we know is time and we use it to define things but we don't or can't conclude with absolute certainty that nothing exists outside of it.

John has stumbled into a contradiction he does not recognize. It's a mental puzzle that requires logic and detachment which he does not possess. His belief in a god without testable evidence to back it up is his obstacle.

Matt was admirably restrained in this one. For once he didn't explode at the caller -- and this caller _deserved_ to be exploded at a lot more than some other callers, for being both dishonest and insulting. But props to Matt, he kept his cool. This is the best version of Matt: all the intelligence, all the logical debate skill, but none of the superfluous rage.
This is a perfect demonstration of religion making people spout utter bollocks.

The thing with "self-evident" is that it's largely relative.
Most would regard 1+1=2 as self-evident, but Russell and Whitehead took over 300 pages of dense symbol shuffling to prove it, given a particular set of axioms.
Now, what are axioms? Axioms are starting assumptions; they need not be "self-evident".

@sparki9085 To the best of my knowledge, the ancient Hebrews became monotheistic sometime around 1800 bce and started writing the Torah around 900 bce. There are clear influences from Zoroastrianism and other Mesopotamian religions throughout the old testament. Angels are very reminiscent of the minor deities that served the major gods in Sumerian, Assyrian, and Babylonian mythology. Yahweh was once a God of war in Canaanite myth and even had a goddess wife.

I have said this countless times before and I expect to have to say it countless times in the future. At some point Theists will come up with a new argument, it'll still be wrong but at least it'll be new.

The thing that always get's me about the people who scream about the "obviousness" of God's existence is the way it dismisses all of the other kind's of spiritual belief. I'm sure to animists it's equally obvious that all things contain their own unique spirit. To cultures that worship/worshipped multiple deities their presence in reality must have felt equally obvious. How is the monotheistic version of this belief in divinity any more evident than the others?

I actually believe him when he's on a different level of consciousness, but I think he's mistaken when he says it's "higher"...or maybe he's not mistaken on that. How much weed did you smoke before calling in, John? If none, then it's lower. If "a bit", then it's definitely a "high" consciousness level alright, but not actually high (as in vertical or tier) enough to surpass the rest of us.
