Amateur film of a road trip through northeastern India, showing traditional dances and a gigantic flower float. We think that this sequence was filmed in Manipur. If you can identify the location, please let us know.
This amateur film of a road trip from Dimapur to Manipur in northeastern India shows traditional dances and rituals and a gigantic flower float. This footage was shot by keen filmmaker William Meiklejohn, who joined the Indian Forest Service in 1910, and spent most of his working life with the IFS in the North-West Frontier Province, United Provinces, Bengal and Assam.

Look the structure of the rath or kang 0:38...it is in Meitei design and at 1:16 you can see a Meitei girl with traditional attire...at the end there is a Nepali women of limbu tribe which is normal as it was during British era and many british soldiers were nepali and posted in Manipur.. probably she is wife of one of those soldiers..at 1:13 you can even see a British nepali soldier behind the old man ...and it is 100% manipur..0:31 as you can see in video the plains are surrounded by hills
Now many will be thinking why they are wearing dresses like mainland indians and some looks like them...
1) many meiteis converted to hindu religion which is the main reason why they are wearing those dresses and practicing the hindu festival "rath yatra" or "kang chingba"
2) in meitei society there are meitei Brahmins just like Assamese brahmins...
They have aryan features in their looks...those aryans shown in video are probably meitei brahmins.

Shes the nepali princess of limbu clan "ishori devi" or "ninamaa yakthungba" she married the weak manipuri king budhachandra who wanted to get some support from the powerful limbu clan as Manipur was facing lots of crisis from outside world .Her father who was a powerful limbu king felt pity for the poor manipuri people and thus agreed with the king's propsal..it is believed the limbu princess brought 1,000 sacks of gold and jewels along with many bags of "yarsagumba" which later helped in anglo- manipuri war ..she was never written in history as she was not that socially active and kept within herself she dearly loved flowers and children..this is wat my limbu grndma told me

It's possible in that time to intermarriage amongst different kingdom for their interest. As a meitei I find confusing of the lady custume . Their is many intermarriage within royal kingdom in that era. Intermarriage of royal kingdom happened to tripuris as known takhel Ahom kingdom as tekhow and burmis know as awa locally in name . That era has very strong wave in believing hindusium with influence from royal king of manipur . A little earlier to this era the force conversion to Hindu was done by the king. Convert or get kill. So many people who forcely converted show and obeys Hindu custum but there soul was not . So they keep a place in the corner of the house hiding the soul god or almighty without any statue (name Apokpa/Lieningthou). So by this nature , now we have every Apokpa place in a hidden corner of every home as traditional believe and it is believed and most important. Even if the person is a Hindu his believing in Apokpa stands more important.

Yes, they are Meitei's. They were celebrating Rath Yatra ( a festival) here in the video. Meitei's are a group of indigenous tribal community in Manipur who was forcefully converted to Hinduism ( not all)

limbu is nothing that a tribes n bisnupriya is dublicate meitei specially made by Bangali.
@@lemmanuel221 there is no such thing as duplicate Meitei. They are Bengali origin community who settled in Manipur a long time back, older than even many Kuki-chin tribes and became closely related to Meiteis in culture.

Meitei was once a black people who evolved to mongoloids...Even today Black people evolving to mongoloids and old mongoloids people evolving to white people... Meitei were once a Austro Asiatic people then Austronesian then they were proto Tibeto burman...
