Hi, finally after all these years I see someone who was where I was. I arrived there just weeks after 60001, State Of Michigan was delivered and left one week before Viet nam deployments started. I was also a ground member of the 379th. When did you arrive? Another friend of mine from high school went in the same time as I did and went to KI. His name was Mike Reverski and I say that because you have another reply from runtothehills below who went there but he was there many years after we left. What years did you serve at Wurtsmith? Oh, I just read your post again and see that you too came years later. Did you stay until the base closed? I lived there on the end of runway 09 right on the shore of Van Etten Lake. Oh, I guess you were quite a while after Chrome Dome shut down right? Were you there when SAC closed?I am 79 now and I finally after all these years found 60001 and she is alive and working. Unlike her, I struggle every morning just to get out of bed and she has another 40 years to go. Can't believe it. Do you still live in Michigan? I'll wait to hear from you.
I was stationed at Utapao AF base in Thailand during the Vietnam war and the base had 60 of these B-52 bombers on station. During the bombings on the Ho Chi Minh trail and Hanoi these mighty air beasts were launched 1 minute apart taking up the better part of 2 hours. The runway was 12,000 ft long and it took about 11,500 ft to get one of these heavily loaded planes in the air. The noise was overwhelming and thick black jet fuel smoke would cloak the entire base for long periods of time after these launches. The second part of the story I was a air crew member on a EC-135 communications relay aircraft orbiting over the Gulf of Tonkin between Hanoi and Haiphong island and at night we could watch the extended fireworks shows as thousands of tons of bombs were dropped by these air raids and on clear days we could see the damage done by the extended bombings.
roy hoco I was stationed at Takhli and Ubon Aug 70 to Aug 71 and on my days off used to take the daily 130 that made the rounds from base to base. Pretty neat in those pre-nine eleven days when you could just walk around the flightline and hangars checking things out and nobody questioned you. When it came time to DEROS I didn't want to leave..... Wright Flyer, USAF (1968-1972).
I remember my days working as a 328XX radio tech on these machines. Making sure the top level stair grate was not down as you went up the ladder. The unmistakable whistle/scream of those 8 engines. The wing flaps the size of small airplane wings. The fact that the tail works as a giant antenna for the HF radio. And how long it took to run wires from the cockpit to the tail!! lol

Wow, they had a full tank of gas when they left and looks like they came back the the 50k left plus what ever ifrs the had. I can't tell if the wings are flex or stiff but they are empty. This one was birthed at KI Sawyer it is an even tail number but I had seen her during the Cuban Crisis. It was the only time I remember super wings was when we went through that. I was at Wurtsmith, 379th Bomb wing and we took delivery of all the new H's from 001 through 031. Wurtsmith got the odd numbers and KI got the even numbers. We also got 0023 which was the one that Chuck Fisher, Boeing's chief test pilot to 0023 up and ripped the whole vertical stab off. By the way I have a picture of her when she taxied into Davis Mathis to be parked but not destroyed. I believe 23 is the one they took apart and drove to Kansas City to be used as a template for the new changes coming up. I haven't read all the comments tonight on this video but heart is full of joy to see these girls again. It was such a joy to watch the OMS boys at work out there. Brought back so many memories to me. I was shocked to see how big all the support equip was. All we had was the MD80 and the MA1A was 2/3 the size of what was in this pix. Although maybe you didn't take our equipment so you wouldn't have to have the 135's take them over. I miss the gun even though they didn't work most of the time. As I said in an earlier post I sure miss these girls they were a big part of my life and I am so happy to see them again. The other thing I will share that most of you probably didn't know was the H's were shipped with shiny aluminum skin and some white paint and they just glowed in the Sun. But the cool thing was to see those Hound dog missiles hanging off each wing. Looked as good as a 57 Chev. It was a lot of hard work to maintain them plus wash and wax the whole thing.

ive seem em running up a new engine all night where the tail is sitting there jumping up and down and side to side like a bull in the chute. Carswell AFB 74-78 7th Bomb Wing SAC. I was a close in sentry securing the nuclear arsenal.
Partially bec of the stress on the wings. I believe they move 8ft... plus the stall speed. I got to fly in one once and I was blown away by how hard you're pressed into your seat on takeoff and on landing once they hit the chute you get pulled surprisingly hard. Watching from afar it all looks really slow but it's a pretty powerful machine.
Great video but it would have been better if the weather was clear with blue skies .I was fortunate enough to see a BUFF close at the Darwin Aviation Museum in beautiful Australia . It is the only B 52 out of America on loan to Australia for 99 years . Looking at the B52 on film you don’t realise how massive she is with that massive wing span and although the fuselage looks pencil thin from far when you get up and close it is big at the tail is as high as a two story building . I make it a point to see her every year when I visit Darwin . Google Darwin Aviation Museum Australia and you can see her in all her majesty lording over all the small flies under and around her .
Hi, you didn't happen to get the tail number did you? I was he first to work on them (B52H 60001) and have been trying to find out where they all went. I know all my birds tail numbers but I don't know where they went so I will try Google to get the tail number of the one in Australia.
It would seem reasonable, at least to me, that the USAF would do quite well for themselves if they just ordered another 100 brand new B-52's from Boeing.
The US is only allowed 96 nuke capable strategic bombers by treaty. The USA has the 20 operational B-2 Spirits that leaves 76 B-52H's to outfit the rest of their bomber forces. The H's they are operating now can be made to last into the 2050's.
@@pheels Yes, the B-1B had its nuclear capability removed in 1994 under treaty. Yes, the B-21 Raider is in the pipe. Penetrate, attack then loiter instead of escape. The B-2 became fully operational in 2003. It'll be around for a while complementing the B-21 as it comes online. B-1 Lancer + B-2 Spirit = B-21 Raider.
