Thank you very much for posting quality content like this. I have my own general remodeling/handyman company and am fairly new to the industry. Your attention to detail and the pride you clearly have in the quality of work you perform is a welcomed experience in this line of work.
I am currently installing a tile surround with a shower tray at my folks house for the first time to help them out with the pan height going from a tub to a shower as they are in their mid 70's, videos like yours are invaluable. Thanks again for your positive attitude and for sharing your knowledge, information, and experience. 👍👍
Your work ethics are super high. I am tile guy myself, but you are the best. Best of luck always, and keep up what you doing, teaching up high standards work ethics. True Professional!!!. Blessings my friend.
I also run my tile out minimum of 3" beyond the edge of the tub of shower base. I helps keep the corners between the shower base and tile as well as the transition between the base and the wall dryer as those spots are typically the spots that get wet and start to rot first.
Absolutely perfect timing for this video. I'm just about to start on my master bathroom. Thank you Isaac! And congrats on the UA-cam award!
Great tip on adding a stud where the shower door will attach. Unfortunately, I have a drain/vent pipe on one side, but this will definitely help.
Is it too much to say I just love this guy. Have never seen a more caring, positive, encouraging person! Would love a link to the end song. You are amazing!
This is awesome and thanks for the tip. I started one of my baths and always used the mortar to seal between the sheetrock but will use the Multimax now. Thanks.
You’re a gift to all of us that we trying to become better on what we do
Thank you coach and god bless
Congrats on the UA-cam Award!
you totally deserve it! Thanks for all your help!
Thank you for sharing your expertise, your joy and your sincerity!
This video is exactly what I needed right now. Perfect timing
God bless you and your family my friend. Thank you again for the work you do bringing us excellent videos of you trade. I appreciate it sir.
I love this guy's videos. I have learned so much every time I watch his videos. Keep it up I hope one day I can do a shower and it coming out close to as yours.
I'm a big fan of the hydro ban fluid applied. I tried the sheet and it's a really good product but I just have better piece of mind with the fluid applied and it doesn't take that long to apply
thanks COACH! You do such a stellar job on your vids ... Love the channel
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Great video! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
I wish I would have known about the tape trick before I did my bathroom. I have some spots where I went over too far with the water proofing and you can see it under the paint. Now I know for the future! I am going to build a new house in about a year and will definitely be using that for a nice edge transition. Also the turned 2 by for blocking! So much more space for screws! 3.5" vs 1.5" wish I would have known that also at the time. Thanks for all the great information!!!
Looking sharp. Thanks for sharing.
Now this is great content! @ 1:00 mark Isaak is bang on right. Some jobs i go to no timber at this position and sometimes the backer board goes outside of the shower area or the drywall goes into the shower! With no timber joining the two. Unbelievable. WHO does this. It's nuts!
Isaac, great advice mate.
Thank you. Your videos are so helpful.
THANK YOU!!! I've always wondered about this...
Good timing for my project! Not sure what happened to the insulation behind the backer board but suggest taking a little more time to place it neatly whether for thermal function or sound abatement. I love using Rockwool comfort batts which are easy to cut and install.
This is the most under talked about topic
I've just used regular thinset and it's quite annoying with how gritty it is, as it messes with your final drywall texturing, so the multi-max lite is a great tip!
Great job!!!🤙🏾wish we hadPerma Base wallboard hear on the big island! Cheers
Great video learned a lot thank you
Right on time boss!!!
I just extended it beyond the shower by a foot or so. 4’ board for a less than 3’ corner shower. Then I covered that 1 feet outside with mud, merging it with the drywall, and painted it over.
Good video! thanks
Tile Coach thanks for your videos. I’ve been doing granite countertops and showers and floors for 25 years. Now that I own my own business I’m trying to reconfigure products that last and help save money. My main question is have you used the James hardie backer with the hydro defense. If so what is your take on it.
Master class!!
💪
I’ve torn quite a few tile showers out from the 70s and 80s, they more times than not tiled directly to plaster and/or plasterboard. Tell me if I’m wrong but I’m my mind the most important thing is the waterproofing. Whichever method you use
Very educational
How do you pick what type of backer to use? I've seen you guys use multiple different ones from kerdi to durock and now with permabase. Is it just what's provided to you by the contractor? Or is it up to you guys to choose which one to use? I've always wondered which way is better and which one to stick with, but you guys are masters of all methods, I love watching your videos and I've learned a ton.
How do you stay so clean Coach? I looked like I fell into a bucket of cement when I was tiling my shower
I dig it.
The levels name is Dave lol. Love your videos!
Thank you
U are the best .
No issues with the modified thinset (multimax lite) when using kerdi under large format tile?
very good.. thanks
How do you transition/finish from the Backerboard (GoBoard) to the ceiling drywall.
Is it okay to leave the top 12” of shower drywall, if I plan to use Hyroban on the entire enclosure? Could I also cover that 12” in thin set or waterproofing membrane e before the hydroban?
On the niche can you get away with applying water proffer on the drywall and only installing cement board around the inside? I have a 2x4 framing and adding a cement board inside the niche wall will make it smaller..
Also don’t you need to apply thinset to the screws?
Can you use multimax lite under ditra to concrete and other areas with no air exposure?
Love the content. You’re doing a fantastic job brother. What part of the Bay Area are you in?
I'm building a chilled wine wall that I will put tile on the wall for an accent wall; it will be enclosed with a glass-enclosed. I will be insulating the wall with R19 or better. Q - should I just use backerboard or do I need to combine backer with greenboard due to moisture
Question: If using Hydro Ban board with a foam shower pan what would you use to apply the Hydro Ban fabric corners, Multi Max or the Hydro Ban liquid membrane?
what do you use on the ceiling? cement board or hydro ban board? will tile the ceiling but looking at studs now.
Thanks
I have a few questions.
1. Why didn’t you add a poly barrier between the cement board and the iso?
2. Was that a Pex A coupling being used on Pex B?
Hey man I doing a house where the shower has a wooden base that's pre sloped usually I make my pans with dry pac what you suggest I do just schlueter it all
Off topic, but noticed the ventilator system at the jobsite. what type do you use/recommend?
I don't know if there are any videos that answer my situation. I have two showers that are back to back then the one side of both showers are up against the wall to the kitchen then the dinning room. The studs on both showers are dry rotted. So do I have to remove the sheet rock in the dining and kitchen to replace the studs? Probably have to do the sill as well.
would backer board and say a red guard or hydro ban be better than the new foam products? I seen a lot of the videos you did on how some foam products can fail even if installed correctly. Seems like backer board would give more strength as well.
I am going to add a small bathroom in an existing bedroom. I'm hesitant to remove the ceiling drywall because of the insulation that was blown in. Will it work if I just put green board over the ceiling drywall? Thank you
Can you use purple drywall blasted with 3 coats of red guard for a walk in shower that’ll be tiled
How much would a 48" x 72" RSS shower pan cost? We're looking at a standard central drain.
What about the ceiling, gow to transition that. Just joint mesh tape and mud???
Isaac do you have a prefrence to use 1\2 drywall next to 1/2 in cement boards or do you use 5/8 and float out the transition
What size or thickness of cement board do I use on my shower walls and do I need to seal them
I'm trying coil roofing nailer to fasten down my hardi backer board,I can't see them backing out or giving out,I'll mix my mud a little wetter ,I'm trying to save time and this seems logical,,,,Any feed back would be appreciated, I plan on using a ton of nails as well !
How much of a gap do you leave from the permaboad to the drypack shower pan?
I noticed that you installed the alkali-resrstant mesh tape on the joints without putting the modified thinset mortar on the perma base first, is there a reason for this? I ask because perma base says to put the modified thinset mortar on the perma base first then embed the alkali-resrstant mesh tape then apply the modified thinset mortar over that.
How do you do the outside corner 90 where drywall and cement board meet?
About to tackle my shower. Do I hang the hardy board before I tackle the mud pan?
Request: Same video but for shower panels, like Nu-tile- tile look-a-like panels
Can I ask why do you not always use backerboard for the wall? I often see mud used to screed the wall. Cheers Declan
Oh what type of liquid waterproofing did you use??😊
I've always wondered why not just tape and bed the joints with waterproofing? Instead of thin-set.
@@als1023 I'm sorry man but I don't agree with you at all. Waterproofing has two functions waterproofing and crack isolation. When going over cracks in concrete or cold relief joints you need to use crack isolation membrane. If you use straight thinset they will crack through your tiles, but if you use a crack isolation membrane the concrete or movement in the walls or floors has no effect on the tile. So what you're saying makes no sense at all
I’m watching the guys do my bathroom remodel and there is a half inch of space between the drywall and ceiling. Is that okay?
What if you just used waterproof paint on the cement board? Would you need the tile?
Use drywall mud and topical waterproofing over the seam
I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and taking the time to make this videos. Fish tacos on me when ypur in LA. 🤛✌️
does it have to be a 2x6 to screw into for the shower door? could you use a 1x6?
What about redi board? How do you transition from that to drywall? Same kind of thing? Or does redi have a product?
How do you handle transition from to drywall at an outside corner
Can you tell me what’s your favorite shower wall board? What do you use with customers currently? Thank you! Jerry
Any experience with densshield backer boards
Have you ever used dragonskin waterproofing
why dont you use laticrete 254 as your thinset when applying kerdi or laticrete sheet membrane? its rated for underwater applications. wouldnt this be better than multimax light or schluter allset if the goal is to waterproof after all. ALSO CAN I apply hyddroban cemetitious directly on drywall (my bathroom ceilings are done in drywall, my showers are steam showers, you think i could just waterproof there with hydroban cementitious directly over primed drywall shower ceiling?
I think it would be helpful if you explained one of the most frustrating things for the average tile guy (who watches your video and buys most of his materials from big box stores) is the "Nominal sizing" of tile backer board. Unless you know what you're doing, buying a 1/2" backer board will get you only a 3/8" thick product. That will NOT mate up well with 1/2" drywall. In this video, yours seems to mate just fine, so either you're using actual 1/2" backer board or 3/8" drywall....
Unless you really know about this, you can get into a bunch of problems when tiling from backer board to drywall on ONE PLANE. The best approach is to make sure you purchase ACTUAL 1/2" thick backer board for the surfaces that must meet up with 1/2" drywall. I've not found box stores in my area carrying actual sizes. I can only get it at pro suppliers....where you may be buying yours......but, your videos are for non-pros.
The time to know this is BEFORE you get to the job with a load of materials that will cause you a headache.
Hey Tile coach! Would it matter if that joint was taped and smoothed over by the drywall finisher? I’ve done quite a few jobs where they wanted me to finish joints like that. Thanks for the videos and your reply!
It shouldn't matter as long as you apply waterproofing membrane after
Why do liquid waterproofing on the walls but a sheet membrane on the floor?
Now let's see all the tiles going up. I wanna see the build from start to finish. The whole reason I subbed to your channel.
I love u man
Is it ready for tile or needs the water proof paint
What about the ceiling? most ceilings are 5/8 per code but most stores only carry 1/2.
what are you making your curb out of with this system?
why didn't you use your favored lacticrete hydrogen instead of vinyl liner on the bed as you did on the wall ??
How would you do that if it was a out side corner
when to use perma base or kerdi?
How do you handle the same transition for the wall to the ceiling joint?
I've worked as a drywall finisher for nearly 7 years now and am finishing up my studies to become licensed in my state. From my experience: I have seen builders use just the mold resistant drywall above and proceed to paper tape and finish it with regular joint compound (referring to the corners/angles where walls meets ceiling). Although I haven't seen the next phase in person. My best guess would be that the tile guys would then proceed and seal it up to the wall part of the angle.
A question I have had is, given the pre slope and the final float on the shower floor, and the 1/4 per foot issue, where should the wall board terminate in the pan? 1/4 inch from the subfloor? Or from the final float? Thanks
1/4 inch from the subfloor and the walls should be done before the pan.
Why does your tile hang out 1/2 pass the line?
How do you tape corners?
Do you need to have the tile first to do your niche? How do figure the tile line or Hight?
If you’ve prepared with backing in the area where niche will go, estimating the general location of the niche, you can then cut the niche in during tiling based on where the horizontal tile seam will land. Just make sure your waterproofing is very good after cutting the niche in.
What that white thing u apply on backboard
There are so many DIYer with bad advice on here, and the comments full of people thanking them for teaching them... This video is one of the first I found sharing what seems like actual good info on this.
