Can we just take a moment to praise how deep the universe of Half-Life is. The series only has three games(counting the episodes as one) and in three games we got so much world building that we can still talk about it 5 years later.
Too bad the rest of it was thrown out of canon with Half-Life Alyx, though I imagine it was a reaction to Epistle 3, like a tantrum, against Laidlaw, but I don't have evidence for that opinion.

I doubt Gaben blames Laidlaw for publishing Epistle 3, but it's unquestionable that Epistle 3 severely hampered any efforts to revive the Half Life franchise. So, Valve had to work around Epistle 3 and they had the perfect tool to do so: the G-Man. Plus, HL:A really only rewrote Epistle 3. Half Life remains canon and Half Life 2 likely also remains mostly unchanged judging from the ending of HL:A.

That doesn't mean Valve hates him for writing it and they are famously lenient of this type of behavior even concerning their intellectual property. Plus, Epistle 3 itself isn't a very satisfying conclusion to the story, as evidenced by community responses as well as Valve when they talk about the narrative following the long hiatus after HL2: Episode 2

Or maybe, if you look into it further, everything was done to blame Gordon. The crystal he pushes into the antimass spectrometer blows up, but because the spectrometer was boosted, all because of the administration. Gman shows up in all of the HL stories as if he knew who would save humanity. Or maybe he knew of the capture he'd suffer at the hands of The Combine (in HL:Alyx) and wanted to mentally condition the most resilient human in the universe.
The resistance was growing at that time. Why do you think Gordon was brung out of stasis so many years after the Combine’s invasion? Because that was when the resistance was about to push into City-17. Gordon was simply an ego-boost for the resistance.
Exactly, i hate when shows or games decide to resume the media by representing by another "universe". This is what i hated about Undertale and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Really hope its simply the timeline's shift due to G-Man's influence

i think the coolest and move overlooked part of the 7 hour war is how little of an army the conquering forces actually were compared to the full scale combine empire. it was no more than a task force honestly. it would have had to been an american independence like victory where the combine simply couldn’t care to give attention and resources to earth anymore. not even the added fact that most deaths were due to the xen creatures and storms, meaning there were already vastly fewer humans on earth than before. the combine simply showed up and demanded subjugation and showcased just a portion. it seemed like no more than a scouting brigade. there’s a reason why the portal being shut of in ep2 is such a big deal because that is victory. the combine were simply cut off from earth. there is no destroying the combine.
Humans could've lasted possibly months against the combine, but we were tired, drained, and focused on Xen. And when this powerful factions arrives and demands us to join them, it was a way for us to let them take care of Xen for us

Earths military forces would not suffer that much damage in such little time, especially when there are dozens of other armed organisations and militias fighting alongside them. Xen isn’t powerful enough to do that.
While what happened to the teleporter test cat was never directly mentioned, it can be assumed that the cat was disintegrated, as that's the same thing that happens when you break the mini teleporter in kleiner's lab.
If it was disintegration, barney wouldn't mind that much as it just dissapear it might be worse, i've seen a model somewhere its a cat model which is, REALLY REALLY f*ked up, i've also saw it on i forgot the channel name but it has colonel on it
he said he heard the meows in his dreams, implying that the cat died slowly and painfully in the same room as him. mabye it was only partially teleported, causing fatal injuries.
Very well done! I’ve watched countless half life lore videos and this one by far was one of the best. Hell I didn’t know the black Mesa incident was on may 16th! Well done and keep it up! I love learning this stuff and I can guarantee plenty of others do too!
I'm really enjoying these videos. They give me an entire different perspective on the lore of Half Life. It's really easy to miss a lot of the details you describe in your videos while you're playing the game, as they are not blatantly obvious. Keep up the good work!
It's funny... if you know what to look for you can really tell that those little expository newspaper articles about things like Earth's surrender were written by a novelist and not a journalist. They don't follow that rule where a newspaper article always gives you the most relevant pieces of information first and then fills in background information after. They read more like a piece of a novel. The main difference between articles and narration is that an article, which these aren't, is meant to be read by someone who lives in the same world where it's published. Narration, which these are, is directed towards a reader who lives in a different one. :) In short, they're written to tell the game's story and you can smell storyteller all over them XD

As a fan of historical lore and sci fiction lore, I like that you used the term Underground Railroad for a escape or retreat from tyranny. I think Sci Fiction wide and god forbid if that ever happened in our universe, that is what it would be called simply because of the familuarity in history.
One thing that kept me thinking after watching your videos: I have never felt playing as a scientist when playing half life. Gordon’s role is very specific .
this make me wish for a half life/fallout rpg style game, we play as a resistance member, scavenging, helping the small communities, ambushing the Combine, while the fight between Freeman and the Combine take place
And just all of the combine units or synths, are just like humans, they're under custody and are used for fighting or transporting. It'd be nice to work with rogue combine soldiers or rogue synths.
There can't be rogue combine soldiers and synths since they brainwash them and delete their memories, so it's impossible for the to be disloyal to the Combine.

I think that the combine's major mistake in their occupation of earth is that they use the trans-human arm of the combine overwatch to guard cities. They should've used other military assets instead of humans since we are so adept at fighting each other.
Probably it was less resource intensive to use humans against humans, they practically had to do nothing, we just messed up each other without doing any serious damage to them or any other of their millitary units. But yeah they greatly underestimated humanity or didn't even care that much about the occupation, probably they had more important tasks to focus on. The only thing they did care about was teleportation within world since they couldn't do it. But considering how wast their empire is, even this thing probably is just an insignificant thing to them in the grand scheme of things.
It's part of their conquering strategy. Using a species own strenghts against them. The error of the combine was not to use transhuman troops but their error was multi-layered. For one they underestimated the resistance and let them free reign on the coast for too long. Another part is that their forces were intended for occupational purposes and not full on war. Also combine soldiers are really nerfed compared to a resistance fighter lorewise.
Wait a minute, I thought that the rocket launched a satellite relay that basically blocked external portals. I didn't know that they shot it into the thing?
If glados hadn’t killed everyone there would be no revolution, as there would be nothing to revolt from, I mean they (almost) practically mastered portal technology about 80 years prior to the resonance cascade, and had powerful ai turrets. In that 80 years, they easily could have developed some kind of super weapon that the combine would stand little to no chance against Then again, cave johnson mostly just wanted to perfect the portal gun and sell it but you cant perfect perfection Edit: grammar and new paragraph
From a real world perspective even at the time it was made portals turrets while very memorable are terrible functionally. High center of gravity literally tell you what they are doing. Are slow to react and you know where they are searching. The reason why automated anti personal turrets aren't real is because it can very easily go wrong.

I wonder if other worlds have their own resistance, I think it perfectly feasible for that to be the case as even though lots of humans joined the combine though not all of them and I think it's possible that not all members of other species have joined the combine on their world's
I just realized why the Resistance wanted the Borealis ship. It is used to travel between worlds. This could lead to contact between other words and stage a Universal Uprising against Universal Union, causing them to lose control of everything.

I think that the combine's major mistake in their occupation of earth is that they use the trans-human arm of the combine overwatch to guard cities. They should've used other military assets instead of humans since we are so adept at fighting each other.

Probably it was less resource intensive to use humans against humans, they practically had to do nothing, we just messed up each other without doing any serious damage to them or any other of their millitary units. But yeah they greatly underestimated humanity or didn't even care that much about the occupation, probably they had more important tasks to focus on. The only thing they did care about was teleportation within world since they couldn't do it. But considering how wast their empire is, even this thing probably is just an insignificant thing to them in the grand scheme of things.
It's part of their conquering strategy. Using a species own strenghts against them. The error of the combine was not to use transhuman troops but their error was multi-layered. For one they underestimated the resistance and let them free reign on the coast for too long. Another part is that their forces were intended for occupational purposes and not full on war. Also combine soldiers are really nerfed compared to a resistance fighter lorewise.
Wait a minute, I thought that the rocket launched a satellite relay that basically blocked external portals. I didn't know that they shot it into the thing?

I have considered Decay but I would just have issues capturing footage for it. I haven't looked for a pc port so there may be hope

I mean they (almost) practically mastered portal technology about 80 years prior to the resonance cascade, and had powerful ai turrets. In that 80 years, they easily could have developed some kind of super weapon that the combine would stand little to no chance against
Then again, cave johnson mostly just wanted to perfect the portal gun and sell it but you cant perfect perfection

From a real world perspective even at the time it was made portals turrets while very memorable are terrible functionally. High center of gravity literally tell you what they are doing. Are slow to react and you know where they are searching. The reason why automated anti personal turrets aren't real is because it can very easily go wrong.

I wonder if other worlds have their own resistance, I think it perfectly feasible for that to be the case as even though lots of humans joined the combine though not all of them and I think it's possible that not all members of other species have joined the combine on their world's
I just realized why the Resistance wanted the Borealis ship.
It is used to travel between worlds.
This could lead to contact between other words and stage a Universal Uprising against Universal Union, causing them to lose control of everything.
