I love how you don't pre-select which dishes for them to have for you. It's so comforting to the natives and shows a lot of respect. Mark, you're an awesome dude! Great video!
You are respectful to the locals and enjoy the food they prepare. You never insult their choices. Unlike a lot of bad tourists who think everything is about them and what their Mommy cooked for them.
Thanks to you Mark and the Maleku people for sharing their food and culture with us. I had never heard of them before today and now we have had one glimpse into their unique way of life. I hope all of the Maleku people are successful and can continue to live the traditional lifestyle they cherish.
Ah Mark, thank you for respecting cultural diversity. Amazing to see similarities across cultures. I was raised in Durban, South Africa. My mum, being the daughter of an Indian immigrant, grew up eating iguana and I was raised to slaughter chickens, all being a normal way of life for us. I truly admire the respect you show to people and what each culture considers food. The humility that both you and Ying demonstrate is so authentic. Long-time supporter, forever supporter! Blessings to you and your family, may you all continue to grow, flourish, and prosper.
Much respect you Mark for always showing love, care, compassion for cultures aroudn the world, especially the Indigenous cultures, particularly in the Americas, they have been historically marginalized. Me being of partial Indigenous descent, this warms my heart. You deserve all the success you get in life!!
Hi Mark, I've been a huge fan of your videos for many years, and I always watch your videos again whenever I travel to any country you've shown on your videos. As a Costa Rican myself, I never thought you would go to Costa Rica for your videos. And I have to say that this video in particular is perhaps my favorite. Your level of respect, willingness to learn, friendliness, and dedication is beyond anything we get to see on the Internet these days. Kudos to you and your team, and a huge thank you for showing the greatness of the small native Maleku people of Costa Rica. I learned more about the Malekus by watching this video than in my whole life as a Costa Rican!!!
My wife is part indigenous Costa Rican. Comida tipica is hard to define, but this experience explores a lot. Long time fan who loves your videos. God bless
Thanks for showing my country and maleku culture to the world, I loved these three Costa Rica episodes, I hope you come back soon so you can experience the gastronomy of Limón province in the caribbean, it is absolutely delicious, and very different from the rest of the country.
I’m kinda watching in awe. Not sure I could eat iguana but Mark is the epitome of diplomacy, grace and open mindedness. Any wonder he’s the subs he has. Thanks Mark. Favorite channel
Mad respect to Elias/Jakima, and the rest of the Maleku. The level of passion they have in sharing their community and culture tugs my heartstrings. I wish them all success and all the good things in the world.
I am glad to see that you were very respectful of their culture and willing to learn a few words in their native language. Also, you gladly accepted their native food.
There’s a learning experience in what village you go.that’s great how over everything step by step.,so that people can understand how everything prepared and cooked.
I loved this video, it is truly stellar. Thanks for portraying this culinary tradition from our country, from one of our 8 indigenous peoples. I fondly remember eating at the Baja Talamanca Bribri territory and the Rey Curré territoru from the Borucas for their amazing Baile de los Diablitos festival... I have visited other reserves, but unfortunately haven't eaten there. El mayor aprecio para la gente maleku y de nuestras otras culturas indígenas, mis mayores respetos por difundir y no dejar desaparecer sus culturas.
Great content! I'm from Costa Rica and I didn't know much about the Maleku's food. I love how you enjoyed the food.. Thank you for these videos, I hope you keep having an amazing experience in my beautiful country ☺️
Such a beautiful culture, food, and wonderful people-the Maleku people. Thank you to their generosity & thank you Mark for your respectfulness in showing us their culture 🫶
I'm from Costa Rica and this made me so happy! I love his excitement and respect towards our culture. Costa Rican people are the sweetest and warmest. Love this!
Just found your UA-cam channel a few days ago and have been enjoying the love of food and culture you and your family share with your viewers. But, this episode! This episode has made me a fan for life. I have seen many professional travel/food personalities attempt to interact with Indigenous people and while some have been okay at it (and some pretty awful) YOU, my friend, were incredible. I am an Indigenous woman and to see the way you interacted with and uplifted the voices of this community made my heart happy. You gave them center stage to tell the stories of their food, culture, language, medicines, traditional knowledge, and continued battle with settler colonialism. It is a rare thing for an outsider to interact with Indigenous people with so much grace, respect, heart, and humility. I applaud you and thank you for teaching me about the Maleku people - Indigenous relatives from another part of the world. Qeciyeew’yew! Miigwetch! My thanks for you!
I love this video, the way you respect and honestly taste and try their food, I take my hat off to you Sir, I'm from Costa Rica and learned a lot from this very important part of my country and my own people.
Much respect to the local, people and although the preparation of the food was hard on the eyes at times, I admire how much you really involve yourself in the back growing knowledge, and respect how they live Mark. Thank you for your videos
Thank you for traveling all over mark I really appreciate it I don't have the scratch to go all over like you great job maaaark look forward to next video keep up the good work
Anyone can make videos of the beaches, night life, and tour traps of Costa Rica. A few can make videos of the native indigenous people, their culture, traditions, and customs!!!! Brilliant Mark 🙏❤ 🙏
Another awesome food adventure, the absolute legend of Food Travel vloggers. Cheers Mark for the inspiration to create Drew's Travels, documenting life in the lesser explored areas of the Philippines.
Salute and thanks Mark because through you we got to learn so many things of different tribes, their food and culture from different corners of the world❤
Mark is right. If you eat meat, you should know where it comes from and how is obtained. I lived on a farm in Puerto Rico until I was 15. My grandmother tought me how to kill the animals and prepare them for cooking. That's just part of farming animals for consumption. Fresh meat is the best tasting. I love Mark, he is willing to taste anything and he is very respectful. ❤❤❤
Im a Costa Rican and this was great to see. Our indigenous people are not many and they deserve to have their traditions represented. Great video as always
The Native people of Canada smoke salmon in half keeping a head area connection to hang on the fence facing the fire in a round shape. The fish slowly cooked with the heat and smoke came from the fire and slowly dried up the moisture of the fish. They left there for days to be ready to eat and preserve them in the future.
Mark, i know big networks or companies wl try to acquire you, Hopefully you keep your videos authentic. You are truly a blessing to how you share ur knowledge of food , and let us witness and see other cultures, through food .
Thanks Mark for not only showing this experience to the world but also to us, the Ticos, we have definitely lost a lot of culture by having out indigenous traditions not being shown by ourselves government and education
Maleku Tribe! Much respect To them for keeping the 'tradition' that dates way back. Cooking food without any kinds of spices and only a 'little' salt, had to be the purest and freshest of food. Thanks, @Mark Wiens for showcasing the Maleku Tribe.
Cooking with natural ingredients and cooking it the indigenous way makes so much more sense. No wonder everyone is going back to doing things the way our ancestors used to do it. Love it @Mark Wiens❤ ❤
the taste of Iguanas meat is almost taste like a chicken, so nice to see their culture..specially their native dishes, the way they prepare their healthy and delicious food..
Some of us costarricans value the Maleku people and the other seven indigenous groups as a living treasure. They have suffered and fought over the ages so they could survive in the cultural concert of this diverse country. Thankfully they are being recognize as the original peoples but the job is not finished yet and the fight for justice and acceptance continues...Will you go to the Caribbean coast? The food there is from another world!!!
An indigenous family lives just three miles from me on land they have owned for centuries. Nice people speaking great Spanish and even a little English. They make mortars and pestils an other things out of solid rock.
Plaintains and bananas were introduces to Costa Rica in 1878. Coffee in 1779 according quick research. our indigebous adapted their culture to rice, plaintains , and other foreign products.
@Mark as a Costa Rican I want to thank you for the great job you did on this video. I appreciate how respectful you are to the Maleku culture.
I love how you don't pre-select which dishes for them to have for you. It's so comforting to the natives and shows a lot of respect. Mark, you're an awesome dude! Great video!

I really hate it when a UA-camr ate local foods and starts making face or straight up stop eating them. Mark is so respectful
Unlike that moron Sonny
WTH are you even talking about... 👀😒
Do you know how much iguana is eaten in Florida? A lot. You can freely hunt it here all you want.
Y muy tragón. Así se hace ❤
Thanks to you Mark and the Maleku people for sharing their food and culture with us. I had never heard of them before today and now we have had one glimpse into their unique way of life. I hope all of the Maleku people are successful and can continue to live the traditional lifestyle they cherish.
