After reading every one of these comments and how Canadians are taking offence to this song. Just a heads up. I was at Missy's concert the other night and she gave a brief explanation of this song. Basically, she wrote this song as how she thinks the boy was feeling/thinking. The "oh canada" part is the "boy" expressing how he can't wait to be safe in canada and away from the terror. So in reality, if you're canadian you should feel blessed that someone wants to call your country home and feels safe there. No matter the back story, no matter if they were safe in Turkey or if the media moved his body. The asylum seeker crisis in this world is repulsive. Even if the back story of this song is incorrect, i'm sure there have been hundreds/thousands of stories that can relate to this song. This song wasn't written for political propaganda or to try and con people into giving money. This song was written because obviously something deep had hit Missy's emotions and she felt the need to express it through her music. This song isn't hitting out at Canadians, or calling people out on their bullshit. This song isn't about hate or anger or telling people to kill themselves. This song is a possible small eye opener to some people who may not know about the asylum seeker crisis. Maybe Missy released this song so that people who don't understand what's going on, can look further into the problem and be more opening to humanity who seek refuge from pain and suffering. So maybe before telling each other to kill themselves, or call each other names, think for a second about the fact that someone actually made a song about the shit that is happening just off our shores and it's making an impact on everyone who listens to it.
+Oliver Macbeth Thank you for that. It's troubling that few others will see it that way, totally enveloped in their own petty opinions and biases. It hurts to see some of the comments to this video, especially because the song and visual representation are so heavily emotional and touching. Thank you, there are still people out there who are not that close-minded, but instead are open and receptive to such works of conscious art.
I'm glad someone realizes how this song is portrayed. and no offense Oliver but i kinda burst out laughing after reading what u said and looking at ur profile pic.XD
I just watched Missy Higgins on 'One Plus One' here in Australia and Missy confirms what you said here and I heard it like that too, she's a musician who was inspired to write about the emotions she felt after seeing the boy on that beach... No political agenda whatsoever, just a musician doing her thing and doing it well... I was inspired listening to her...
+christianASMR Yes, very heart warming & full of emotion. That's the main objective hoped to be achieved in releasing such a fallible song. Enjoy your concert christian, to hell with the truth, there will be 1 boy not attending though.
+christianASMR It/s a great song. However, contrary to your claim about it being "hard" to put into words, I find it easy to put this subject into words. It's the same old choice: division/conflict/fear/greed/hatred/unhappiness or love. Indeed, I have put it in monetary terms, using articles from other people who also put it into monetary terms - welcoming refugees benefits us ALL: facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153846030953714&set=a.10153252721863714.1073741877.776718713&type=3&theater
This song is even more hard hitting in light of the conflict we see escalating around the world …. I pray for all children in war torn areas …. They don’t deserve to be affected
Never in my life would I imagine I would love a Missy Higgins song. Never in my life would I imagine my whole mindset would be changed by a song. Absolutely broke my heart today. Completely.
The people who generally push for immigration with open borders live in gated suburbs with big gates... so look at where there are people living without gates....
You made me bawl my eyes out. That was so poignant, so beautiful and yet so difficult to watch knowing what happened to that little boy. Please, world,, can't we put an end to this awful misery? Can history not repeat itself just for once?
He was carried from the water by a solider And the picture screams a thousand different words He was running from the terror with his father Who once believed that nothing could be worse So he'd handed a man two thousand precious dollars The way you'd rest a bird in a lion's open jaw And he told his boys that Canada was waiting That There was hope upon her golden shores But at night he said a quiet prayer into the wind Oh Canada, if you can hear me now Won't you open up your arms towards the sea? Oh Canada, if you can help me out All I ever wanted was a safe place for my family Well the days were long but the nights were even longer And the baby boys never left their mothers' side But the boat was small and the waves were getting stronger And they began to fear they'd not survive So the father said "We gotta hold each other tighter I'm not losing everything I've loved tonight And we've come so far I know that out there somewhere There's a place where we'll not fear for our lives" But as he held onto the side of the boat he looked up at the sky Oh Canada, if you can hear me now Won't you open up your arms towards the sea Oh Canada, if you can help me out The sea is turning and I think we're going down Oh Canada, if you can hear me now Won't you open up your heart towards me Oh Anyone, please help me out All we ever wanted was a safe place for our family There's a million ways to justify your fear There's a million ways to measure out your words But the body of Alan being laid upon the sand Tell me how do you live with that? Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Missy Higgins
+Jeff Hirvonen it should be called "OH AUSTRALIA" based on our policies - but Aylan is a global symbol & Canada was where the extended family was based!!
A lot of people here are commenting how the Aylan Kurdi story is a myth, but that's not exactly the point of this song. Yes the picture of him on the sand triggered her response, but the story she paints with this song resonates with a lot of other refugees. So many people die trying to get away from their countries and away from persecution, and that's what she's trying to raise awareness for, in my opinion.
We watched this in Well-being when we were looking at bravery... the boys in my class started laughing at it and I needed so much restraint not to snap at them..
For all the people that are saying the story that missy was portraying is incorrect the child mentioned isn't the only child this has happened to shes not just talking about him she's singing about every child refugee that has had to flee from their own country in fear of being killed hopping on to a small broken boat and travelling across the world in hope for a safe place to call home but sadly not making it. So please for all those people saying what missy is singing is wrong or incorrect, it's not.
He was carried from the water by a soldier And the picture screams a thousand different words He was running from the terror with his father Who once believed that nothing could be worse So he'd handed a man two thousand precious dollars The way you'd rest a bird in a lion's open jaw And he told his boys that Canada was waiting That there was hope upon her golden shores But at night he said a quiet prayer into the wind Oh Canada, if you can hear me now Won't you open up your arms towards the sea? I'm Australian and Australians need to take note and so does our government or she will make a song about us and I think she should maybe our government might wake up then.
liam baker Honestly we are awful with the way we treat Syrians and asylum seekers, putting them onto islands, unsafe for children and families. And another sad thing is, this child is deprecated from his dad, and every time the dad comes to visit the son, it hurts to see them depart from each other, just unjust of what the government does, they do not deserve that pain, it’s awful to see them left to the side like garbage, unwanted and isolated.
this song gives me goosebumps every single time i listen to it. im currently trying to learn it on guitar and sometimes i just sit and stare at the lyrical masterpeice
This song is so powerful, and the children's pictures only make it more powerful. That millions of people are leaving their homeland because of the evils of war needed to be addressed. We are still human, aren't we? I can't think of anyone who could better express it than Missy Higgins. This is an important song, from an excellent singer/songwriter...one of my favorites. The history of one particular family is less important than the fact that millions of families have lost their homes to an atrocious war that never ends. Hurray to you, Missy. If this song didn't bring tears to your eyes over the inhumanity we see too much of, I'm sorry for you.
Why are Canadians getting upset about this song? The only reason Canada is mentioned, is because it's the place a family dreamed of getting to for safety and solace, when their boat sank and this little boy, his mother and his brother died. Canada symbolises hope. This song is a reminder of the human tragedy we, as the world, find ourselves in today.
Oh Canada brings the pain of that little boy that everyone saw in in papers to reality Missy sings and hits the heart with the reality and tragedy of this poor family xxx
i watched this at school im in grade 6 learning about refugees and we got this showen to us in social studys i wanted to cry because it was really sad and emotinal song so i decided to come home and watch it i feel very blessed to not live in a war torn country like syria
I'm performing this song with the Boston Children's Chorus tomorrow for our Martin Luther King concert, and this is one of the most chilling songs we have.
This sad story could be oh Australia or USA or anywhere in Europe or nearly every country that has cruel refuge and asylum seeker laws where xenophobia takes precedence over human life and humanity. As an Australian I’m am so proud of Missy what a powerful song. As an Australian I am ashamed of our human rights violations. The same people that refuse and block the most vulnerable would be the first to put their own kids on boats to reach safe harbour if the roles became reversed. Who wouldn’t do anything to protect and save their kids to give them a better life. Thank you Missy for this amazing song.
Your amazing Missy! Such an important song !!! I'm a psych nurse and have seen the impact of this crisis! The children's drawings are only getting worse, those that survive to draw their pain. It's gut wrenching. Something has to change!
+Yuri Serebryanski are you sort of Putin's shit? Which Yazidi or christians are not accepted to turkey? World is only watching the refugees to be died like aylan, we, turks, save more than 2M. be human
The video made me cry especially seen as though it was from actual refugees my heart sank as i relized how selfish humanity is we say we have strong human rights records but if you look at places like Australia, where i live the government have Islamophobia and wont let them in they go through all of this just to die or get told they cant pass through. Its a great message and we need more people like you missy!
You people know that if you but this song, 100% of the profits are going to the asylum resouce centre. She is trying to help the world, not destroy and hurt people. Love it Missy
Vaughn Stewart I don't go around picking on vulnerable people or those trying to help the vulnerable, unlike yourself. You're open game now. Try to hurt vulnerable people here, well how about you pick on someone who's got bigger balls than you.
+Vaughn Stewart Did you do a cost analysis as well...??? I'm sure Canada is waiting on your answers. How do you measure happiness? Are you still alive?? We could do fine without you, so if you're not....it's OK.
Vaughn Stewart We are not saying taking your own life is an immediate solution, but that should be considered for the benefit of humanity when you have depression and bad thoughts. Just keep it in mind
Only just found this song after watching Missy on Ahn Do's Brush with Fame. What a stunningly beautiful song. I have played it now four times in a row and feel so much anguish for that poor wee boy and his family. Not one son lost, but two. Missy - thank you. What a beautiful memory for the family to cherish on your words.
This song makes me want to cry, it's so sad and i hope that the family worked their way through this hard time. Good job Missy Higgins, you surely let the world know about this heart-breaking incident.
I think as someone who is able to sit in my lounge, with warmth, internet and food, I believe that anyone in any way they see fit should highlight the absolute devastation refugees feel and go through. With wars and climate change, we will only see more refugees seeking peace, safety and stability wherever they can.
This beautifully written song needs to be seen through the child's innocent eyes. No matter your political, religious or social view. The boys death shouldn't be trivialised by his fathers actions. Why can't we all unite and see the tragic, untimely death of a young boy who was robbed of living a full life, who had the potential of achieving great things and doing good in this increasingly cold and cruel world. As a society we collectively grieve the death of child at the hands of a domestically violent father, this is no different. Thank you Missy...
Heard this on CBC radio driving home, almost had to pull over, it was so beautiful. I'm proud of what Canada has done so far, I just wish we could do more.
My mum and I went to your concert last Wednesday at Hamer hall ( which was one of the best concerts ive ever been to may I add!). when you sang 'Oh, Canada' It made me realize why you were my favourite artist. I was completely blown away, I listened to the lyrics and I felt like I was there, like I was on the boat, like I was that man who lost everything. You've done an incredible job missy! I sing too and I really want to write something this powerful one day!
This is such a beautiful and profoundly sad song. So difficult to listen to but I really could not stop listening! The desperate plight of all those escaping violence is almost too much to bear. Canada is truly a haven- was for my grand parents, and still is. Missy Higgins, you conveyed that and much more in this song. Thank you!
"Let Canada Fix It" -Sincerely, Australia. I think every nation should adopt Tony Abbott's immigration policies. The Islamic World has a religious obligation to take care of it's own people. Quran 48:28-29
Ah benim güzel bebeğim...Gittiğin yerdeki oyun parklarında özgürce sallan...Burada yattığın kumlar orada kaleler yapman için bulunsun...Yeryüzünde ve gökyüzünde, olmak istediğin heryerde izin almaya gerek kalmadan özgürlüğünün tadını çıkar küçüğüm...canım.
We're going to be singing this in my vocal ensemble and I don't know if I can handle it. This is the second time I've listened to the song and I've broken down in tears both times... It's so beautiful and heart-wrenching, this is what happens when violence is taken to innocent lives; it's too cruel, too painful to even imagine all the poor souls that have lost a battle they didn't even want to fight in, all the families that have been broken and scattered from the monster of war
How do we live with that? Surely we have to change. We have to make room for these desperate people. 'Do not be afraid', Jesus said over and over, and yet we prefer our fear to reaching out and being vulnerable and trusting and sharing. Let's choose to be brave.
I know people say she's using this tragic event to exploit herself, but i disagree. The words she has used in this song must have gone through their heads a thousand times. This song is beautiful and portrays this event in a very tragic yet beautiful way.
the images that form the backdrop of this music video are heartbreaking. no matter your standing on syrian refugees, everyone should be able to agree that the violence, heartbreak and trauma to which syrian children have been exposed is one of the greatest human rights injustices of the 21st century.

So In 2016 my year 6 class did this for drama and it made me and my friend kailee ball our eyes out. Weber since I love this song it’s so powerful. Very well done missy very well done❤️👏🏻
Such a beautiful song from Missy’s kind heart. I’m Canadian/Australian and have no idea why anyone would or could think she was saying anything against Canada. The “Oh Canada” parts are supposed to be like a prayer the father, mother and family are thinking about as the boat hits horrific weather.
Thank you for making this clear and I’m jealous that you got to see her live

Me too my friend. I wish it was all okay. this stuff doesn't have to happen . Cruel world :(
This song gives me chills. For 4:47 minutes nothing matters; money, possessions, ego, nothing. Such an amazing song.
He was carried from the water by a solider
And the picture screams a thousand different words
He was running from the terror with his father
Who once believed that nothing could be worse
So he'd handed a man two thousand precious dollars
The way you'd rest a bird in a lion's open jaw
And he told his boys that Canada was waiting
That There was hope upon her golden shores
But at night he said a quiet prayer into the wind
Oh Canada, if you can hear me now
Won't you open up your arms towards the sea?
Oh Canada, if you can help me out
All I ever wanted was a safe place for my family
Well the days were long but the nights were even longer
And the baby boys never left their mothers' side
But the boat was small and the waves were getting stronger
And they began to fear they'd not survive
So the father said "We gotta hold each other tighter
I'm not losing everything I've loved tonight
And we've come so far I know that out there somewhere
There's a place where we'll not fear for our lives"
But as he held onto the side of the boat he looked up at the sky
Oh Canada, if you can hear me now
Won't you open up your arms towards the sea
Oh Canada, if you can help me out
The sea is turning and I think we're going down
Oh Canada, if you can hear me now
Won't you open up your heart towards me
Oh Anyone, please help me out
All we ever wanted was a safe place for our family
There's a million ways to justify your fear
There's a million ways to measure out your words
But the body of Alan being laid upon the sand
Tell me how do you live with that?

There are no words to describe how sad this story is 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Why are Canadians getting upset about this song? The only reason Canada is mentioned, is because it's the place a family dreamed of getting to for safety and solace, when their boat sank and this little boy, his mother and his brother died. Canada symbolises hope. This song is a reminder of the human tragedy we, as the world, find ourselves in today.
Only the lesser-minded of us get upset about this
Thanks you for your beautiful song and putting into words (and music) what so many of us struggle to say.
Beautiful yet sad yet inspiring yet will we have a heart to be human again
Oh Canada brings the pain of that little boy that everyone saw in in papers to reality Missy sings and hits the heart with the reality and tragedy of this poor family xxx

+Yuri Serebryanski are you sort of Putin's shit? Which Yazidi or christians are not accepted to turkey? World is only watching the refugees to be died like aylan, we, turks, save more than 2M. be human
+Turgay Çoruhlu Just ignore that repetitive trolling propagandist douchebag.
Did anyone else cry in this?
@@MegaTrollExplorer get a grip-or you are no better-ignorance is something we all deal with- i know its hard, peace brother.x

So much sadness, turmoil and unanswered questions with the whole refugee crisis. No easy answers. A provocative video.
This is amazing who would of thought and aussie would have done this
Thank you, Miss Brewster! 😇
I was just introduced to this in class... it’s so heartbreaking to think that children drew those pictures....
Me too, I started crying
I am Canadian, and saw this in school. I love the song, and I'm really glad that Canada takes in refugees :)
No words. Just awe, incredible sadness and gratitude xxxxx
Wake up world. This video should be seen million times not others !!!
I lack the words to describe what I'm feeling... my heart hurts. Beautiful, soul wrenching song. Thanks Missy
Missy, you are beautiful and your music is beautiful. You have captured this issue so wonderfully, with grace and sensitivity.
Thanks Missy Higgins!
We won't forget it.
Wonderfull draws, a simle way to explain our reality now...
Oh Canada....!
Om Shanti
An unbelievable song from Missy Higgins...
good job and beautiful song.
Words fail me Missy... Well sung.....
I peformed a lyrical dance to this song and after i had finished my friend broke out into tears cause her dad was a soldier
Thank you!
Every time I come back to listen to this song I legit cry
... I have no words for all the emotions this song gave me 🙏🏼❤️😢
"Let Canada Fix It" -Sincerely, Australia.
I think every nation should adopt Tony Abbott's immigration policies. The Islamic World has a religious obligation to take care of it's own people. Quran 48:28-29
O humanity that could be your child. speechless!
Ah benim güzel bebeğim...Gittiğin yerdeki oyun parklarında özgürce sallan...Burada yattığın kumlar orada kaleler yapman için bulunsun...Yeryüzünde ve gökyüzünde, olmak istediğin heryerde izin almaya gerek kalmadan özgürlüğünün tadını çıkar küçüğüm...canım.
beautiful song voted for you on TripleVMusic app
I didn't think I could love you any more.. But wow. Incredible. Thank you. You're an inspiration.
I'm here because Kelly clarkson's tweet.. such a great song and so deep :(
Thank you from Australia
My teacher showed this to me and I was so upset I don’t know why I’m watching this again!
Real Raw Insightful deep empathy....I hope your lyrics resound and comfort many and covict others...doesn't matter the place or the time.
To me, this speaks mass amounts about our world leaders and representatives.
Speechless !!!! this song broke my heart again ,made me cry .RIP Baby Ellan .RIP little angel :( :( :(
This is such a beautiful tear jerking song.
the images that form the backdrop of this music video are heartbreaking. no matter your standing on syrian refugees, everyone should be able to agree that the violence, heartbreak and trauma to which syrian children have been exposed is one of the greatest human rights injustices of the 21st century.
What a tune. Nailed it missy. Tugged at the heart strings
Thank you Bob Lefsatz for bringing me here to discover this song.
IM SCREACHING MISSY HIGGINS IS A PERFECT PROVOCATIVE ANGEL THE WORLD DOESN'T DESERVE HER
Thank you Missy
So In 2016 my year 6 class did this for drama and it made me and my friend kailee ball our eyes out. Weber since I love this song it’s so powerful. Very well done missy very well done❤️👏🏻
My teacher played this song at the end of the day and it really speaks to you and told you the story
Thank you Missy for new song and hello new folks, looking forward to meeting you. I am at Swans right now, so toasting a drink to everyone.
Thanks Missy Higgins
I love this song !!!
This legitimately made me cry.
This song and the music video are amazing! The amount of symbolism used in the video is astonishing! and a great message aswell.
VERY powerful song and perhaps even more powerful video. Beautiful, and very moving.
Thank you from Greece!
