  • The Stratford Symphony Orchestra in association with the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra presents "Music and Instruments at the Time of Shakespeare"; a SPOGreatMusic Podcast special episode featuring host Dr. Daniel Mehdizadeh in conversation with renowned author, Ross W. Duffin.
    In addition to the conversation, music samples from Mr. Duffin's "Shakespeare's Songbook" have been included at the end of the presentation, used with permission from Mr. Duffin.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR, ROSS W. DUFFIN: A native of London, Ontario, Ross W. Duffin is currently Distinguished University Professor and Fynette H. Kulas Professor of Music Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. A winner of the Thomas Binkley and Howard Mayer Brown Awards from Early Music America, and the Noah Greenberg and Claude V. Palisca Awards from the American Musicological Society, his scholarship on early modern English songs is best known from "Shakespeare’s Songbook" (W.W. Norton, 2004) and "Some Other Note: The Lost Songs of English Renaissance Comedy" (OUP, 2018). A monograph on songs in English tragedy is due to be published soon.
    Mr. Duffin has also published widely in historical performance practice, including on musical iconography, historical pronunciation, theory, notation, improvisation, and tuning-the latter most notably with his monograph "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and why you should care)" (W.W. Norton, 2007). Mr. Duffin is also Artistic Director Emeritus of Quire Cleveland.

    ABOUT DR. DANIEL MEHDIZADEH: Dr. Daniel Mehdizadeh (DMA, University of Toronto) is a composer, conductor, pianist and educator residing in the Greater Toronto Area. Currently the music & choir director at Stouffville United, Daniel previously served as composer-in-residence for the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra (2020-23). He has been involved in both national and international festival series and holds numerous performances in Europe and North America. His works have had global exposure and have been broadcasted across Canada and the US including guest appearances on CBC and Classical Jukebox Radio. Mehdizadeh’s music has been featured on a number of albums, including those released by Akashic Classics, distributed by Universal Group. He currently holds the title of artistic director at East Chamber Music and juror & mentor with SPO’s New Generation Workshops. Mehdizadeh previously served as board member for the Canadian Music Centre’s Ontario region, and is currently part of the music advisory committee for the Scarborough Philharmonic. Through concerts, commissions and festivals, he has been involved with the Penderecki String Quartet, the Princeton Singers, the Ewashko Singers, Capital Chamber Choir, Orchestre de la Francophonie, Georgian Bay Symphony, and North York Concert Orchestra amongst many others. Festivals include Collingwood Music Festival, ChamberFest, Music & Beyond, InnerChamber and much more. His works continue to receive funding through commissions and private patrons including long-time donor and supporter Nicole Senécal.
