ETP -1 was first developed around 1978 as a replacement for the worn out Test Card F slides at the transmitters. It was broadcast from the regional broadcast centres until around 08:10 (before the days of breakfast television). There were many complaints about this test card as for one it had no circle. As far as I know the IBA version was never transmitted with music on ITV, just 400mhz tone. It was then strangely adopted by CH4 for there test transmissions.
During the 80s, the IBA did a feature on co channel interference on Engineering Announcements, but strangely they used Test Card F to demonstrate it.

I don't recall IBA ETP1 on ITV ever being accompanied by music.

I remember waking up early in the early 80's and switch on my family tv to Channel 3 before school to wait for the testcard to appear on screen, The testcard appeared at 5.25am and lasted for 25 minutes with 400mhz tone and then the blue IBA card appeared just before TV-am which begun at 6am.

Was this testcard ever shown during the ITV Strike of 1979 in the early hours?

It certainly wasn't used in the Granada area from Winter Hill. The first time ETP 1 was transmitted from Winter Hill was in the Spring of 1980 when control of the Transmitter was taken over by the new Regional Operations Centre at Emley Moor.

@@anthonylyons9810 I live in the Granada area(Manchester) and the Winter Hill transmitter area.
From memory I recall the apology caption being on during the broadcast day with silence in the background.I don’t recall music but others say that music was played, from Winter Hill.

@@Robbiewa-bg4lu I remember the apology caption accompanied by a music tape consisting of Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3 and Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1 originating from the Central apps room at Winter Hill. 2 weeks later, a new apology caption was transmitted accompanied by 6 New Classical Music Tapes which was Broadcast in most areas and consisted of Brahms Symphony No 2, Tchaikovsky Overtures, 1812 and Romeo and Juliet, Dvorak Symphony No 9,, Schubert Symphonies No 4 and No 8, Mahler Symphony No 4 , and a live Viennese Concert. The latter lasted until the strike ended in October 1979. An ex IBA Broadcast Engineer friend of mine who was based at Emley Moor advised me that the new apology caption was generated from the apps room at the IBA HQ at Crawley Court and the music originated from the Central apps room at the IBA Colour Control Room at St Hilary near Cardiff.
