Turning A 10 Frame Deep Into 3 Nucs! Beekeeping 101

  • The climb to 100 continues! But this time, I'm taking stock of all queen cells and splitting them amongst each nucleus so that no queen cell is wasted. It's still a little early for small splits so I'm putting in more frames of bees and brood than I normally would so that they make it through the next cold snap. Spring definitely came early this year so the bees are growing FAST!

Emily, I only use pine straw in my smoker and if I start with the smoker empty and start the fire with a small amount of straw and puff the smoker getting flames coming out the top then add a little more repeating the puffing to get more flames coming out the top, do this 3 or 4 times then start adding straw rolled up tight then by packing with your hive tool and puffing until the smoker is packed full very tight, it should stay lit, mine does. This builds up a good bed of coals in the bottom and if tightly packed it will burn until out of straw if kept in a vertical position. If you want it to go out lay it on its side. When pine trees shed pine straw I always gather enough to last me a year. I store it in contractor grade plastic bags until I need it. Good luck!

Pine needles and the red sumac buds that are shaped similar to pine cones, dried of course is all I use, burns cool hence cool smoke on live bees and will smolder in the smoker for 1/2 to an hour.

use wood chips to start it like chicken bedding then add smoker grill pellets on top of the chips and it will burn for hours of smoke.

Pine straw is the best I’ve found.. an old bee keeper told me burlap was the best but I don’t have any burlap. Anyway, build your fire up nice and hot in the bottom of your smoker then add whatever material you want to use.

Great vid gal!! I agree burlap..un colored , roll it in light it. Hot end down into the smoker and then a big handful of green grass on top. Keeps the smoke cool. Or a pair of old denim pants.

I think you'll find more success (as far as finding queen cells in splits) by making a hopelessly queen-less arrangement 24 hours before you introduce the frames with eggs/milkbrood.

Try food grade burlap, a full smoker will last at least 2 hours without having to restart it.

I have the same issue with my smoker if I don't get it good and hot before I start. If I light it and let the flames come up and out of the smoker first then after a few minutes put material on top of that then it's usually good to go. I now start my smoker before I get suited up so I'm not wasting time on waiting for the smoker to get hot enough to embers. I hope that helps. You are taking on a lot this year, good luck on your adventures!
