streets cry freedom on the first record is killer, Jake's free form solo is a great example of his roots and total control of where he wants to take the emotion. my biggest guitar hero since"85
Jake is an inspiration for me, he is an incredible guitarist who knows how to play a lot of things, and always with an incredible style and class. He’s very important to me.
I stumbled across the Voodoo Highway album at a pawn shop around 2003-04. I’d only been playing since 2001. I didn’t even know about Badlands, but I knew about Jake. That album is fantastic and it’s my favorite music and playing of his career. Jake doesn’t get the props he deserves. He and Randy are the best Ozzy ever had in his solo career.
I just stumbled onto this channel and after watching lots of your videos I have to say this is one of the very best UA-cam channels I've ever found, and you are an absolute beast on guitar. Subscribed!
Oh hell yeah! Badlands is the greatest! Saw them twice live touring for their first two albums. Jake is a MONSTER and seeing him live in a club on both of those club shows standing right in front of me was astounding, he blew me away both times. Incredible player and a super nice guy. Thanks David, totally awesome upload! 🤘🏼🎸
I saw Badlands at a hole in the wall club near my hometown. Jake and all the band members signed my tab book for the first album and I taped Jake’s pick to the inside cover. Still have it.
@@Michael-bl4no awesome!!! What a band! 🤩 I didn’t get one of Jake’s picks but I was able to get a picture with Jake and also a pic with Ray. Both were incredibly nice guys, such great memories! 👍🏼
The riff to Devil’s Stomp is absolutely killer. Good finger workout and awesome sounding metal riff. Solo to Rumblin’ Train is my favorite solo of all time... perfect marriage of technique and raw feel.
Jake is da man! I saw him twice when he was playing with Ozzy. I was a big fan of Badlands but never got to see them. It's really a tragedy that Ray's messy life has kept the Badlands albums from being available (the story is out there, I won't cover it here.)
Thanks for this Chordplay! Jake has such a recognizable but unique way of playing. No one sounds like Jake. Badlands first album is one of the most rocking albums out there. Winters Call and Seasons are my two favorite songs on the album.
Funny and true story! Back in the mid-90’s, I was in a Kiss tribute band playing Ace at a large Kiss convention. Both Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer were there with their new band (post Revenge) since Ace and Peter rejoined Kiss. Their band actually went on before our Kiss tribute, so pretty weird having former members of Kiss “opening” for you! Anyway, being a huge Badlands fan, I told Eric how much I loved the album - particularly his drumming on Hard Driver. However, Eric had no interest at all in talking about Badlands. Funny, as it turns out, he ended up being in THE “Kiss tribute band” playing Peter! Kiss without the original guys pretty much feels like a tribute band to me! It’s sad Eric didn’t have fond recollections from Badlands because he played some kickass drums! At least it was his playing and not just being a Kiss karioke drummer! Bruce Kulick was very gracious - during the solo to Parasite he gave me a thumbs up!
Jake is in that class of player that I call guitar players guitar players like John Sykes they might not be household names to casual music fans but every guitar player knows about them and how amazing they are.
Love Jake. The first album was great. Got to see them on that first tour. Was happy to see Jake move on from Ozzy. Eric Singer from Kiss drummed for Badlands too. Great lesson Dave, keep up the great work
I started going through some Badlands the other day. I was surprised at how simple the riffs were, yet how great they sound. Rumbling Train or Dancing on the Edge; super simple, but its all in the dynamics.
Dude, Badlands was so awesome, and Ray Gillan f-ed any chance of getting that great music re-released! They played in my college town of Richmond, KY, when I was at Eastern Kentucky University. Dreams in the Dark was a jam! I'm glad you could find enough material to do this lesson! Jake got hosed with the music in this band. Some of his best playing! Great lesson, Dave! Jake belongs to be at the top of the best guitarist list
hey guys, a massive jake fan here. May want to check out greg chassions band atomic kings. Pretty good stuff and greg is da bomb. Hope to hear him and jake together again.
@Late Night Lessons A Guitar World article with Jake from a handful of years ago. He told them he reached out to Zakk and wanted to tour RDC ( probably opening for ) BLS. Never got a response back though. Can you imagine two Ozzy greats on stage together?! Seriously! Sold out shows...you know it!
Same with me the first Badlands release was so killer it seemed it just slipped by not sure if it was Grunge beginning to break or what Voodoo highway was great to never heard the 3rd one Winters call was my favorite off the 1st one definitely underated for sure 👏👍🤘
Voodoo highway is a fabulous album. Lucky to see them in small venues in London when the album came out. Thanks again Dave. What guitar is that. Looks like a Prs from the Headstock
Great lesson. Jake is an underrated rhythm player. And fun fact, for those who want to jam out the entire "Last Time" track the solo section includes one of the licks Dave taught in his 3 Jake E Lee Licks From 1984. Check out the "speed lick and thank me later.
Jake's riffs with Badlands reminds me a lot of Tommy Bolin on Deep Purple's Come Taste the Band. Those flat 5 riffs were all over 80s metal, Dokken for instance. But that riff reminds me of the Scorpions on Blackout or Lovedrive. Classic 70s blues rock in the 80s!
Love Jake, my favorite of all the Ozzy guitarists. I have to disagree with your interpretation of Dreams in the Dark, though. He stays in 7th position during the verse riff, hitting the double stops on the 9th fret A and D strings and the 7th fret on the D and G strings instead of playing the full B and D chords further down the neck. You also add an extra two beats, where he hits each of the double stops once, and then uses vibrato on the second double stop. Also, every second time through the verse riff, he drops down and hits an open A chord real quick after the last double stop. You can hear it in the studio recording if you're listening for it. I'm pretty sure he also adds a third note on 9th fret of the G string while he plays the first two double stops in the riff. Check out a video called Badlands-Rehearsal-Dreams In The Dark, where you can see him staying in 7th position except when he drops down to hit the A chord every second time.
Great choice for a lesson, Dave… I’ve been stealing and recycling licks from these albums for nearly 30 years. And I’m not ashamed! The reasoning behind them being unavailable is pretty messed up, but hopefully one day they’ll get it all straightened out and people will be able to buy them again.
I have held on to the debut CD and Voodoo Highway for dear life since the early '90s. And I'm glad I did, since they were already out of print ( I believe ) even back in that time-frame!
Thanks for this lesson and perfect timing as i was trying to play along with some Badlands songs just last night 🤘. What delay setting are you using for "Sun Red Sun"?
If there was justice in the world Badlands would have been the biggest band or the world. Maybe it would have happened or the first album came out two years earlier.
Make a Rowan Robertson lesson of the chord voicing he uses on the album Logan Robertson The album is very influenced by BadLands dark Chord voicings and tonalities. Click here to listen to it ua-cam.com/video/ycoxPBbZSwU/v-deo.html
That first Badlands album is So. Good. I find myself *constantly* stealing, er... "borrowing" from it in my playing.

I loved Badlands so much and saw them a few times in London. Great stuff. Thanks David!!!
Jake is the Man.

That first album is a top 10 for me period. The tone, rhythm, leads and structure of ALL tune perfection!

i love that pedal note riff or whatever jakes playing right before the solo. definetely sounds like a leftover riff from ozzy, like rock n roll rebel.
The riff to Devil’s Stomp is absolutely killer. Good finger workout and awesome sounding metal riff. Solo to Rumblin’ Train is my favorite solo of all time... perfect marriage of technique and raw feel.
Devil's Stomp is my favorite Badlands song. The intro alone is sublime.

Dreams in the dark. Jake is Awesome
Jake is in that class of player that I call guitar players guitar players like John Sykes they might not be household names to casual music fans but every guitar player knows about them and how amazing they are.
RIP Ray Gillen
Jake is so good, love his style that bluesy, rock just ass kickin guitar playing
F yes, love the Badlands riffs....sickness.
This was such an awesome band back in the day! Thanks Sensei Dave!
Love Jake. The first album was great. Got to see them on that first tour. Was happy to see Jake move on from Ozzy. Eric Singer from Kiss drummed for Badlands too. Great lesson Dave, keep up the great work
I've been waiting on this one for a while!! The first Badlands album is in my top 10 albums of all time. THANKS for the great lesson! 👍🎸🤘
One of my favorite records period.
Wow ... Badlands kicked ass !
once again start to finish great job
Love your channel David, and Bandlands. Thanks again.
I started going through some Badlands the other day. I was surprised at how simple the riffs were, yet how great they sound. Rumbling Train or Dancing on the Edge; super simple, but its all in the dynamics.
The best stuff ever! Thanks again for featuring Jake! Such a badass
Thanks David this is awesome 👏💪
Such a great breakdown of Jake! I’ve always loved his chord work. Thanks for this episode!
Dreams in the Dark. Keep bringing 'em, Dave.

My favorite song is last time but more for the bass LOL when you listen to that song when you're driving it's just... driving
FTW!! More Bandlands songs and solos!!

Thanks a million!

Winter's call is a fantastic song
GREAT choice of songs - well done, sir.

Good stuff!
When we getting a Kazumi Watanabe video David?
Yes!! Jake's on the house!!
What about next?? Bad English??
youre the best dave!

thanks for doing this. Jake was so underrated. Wish he did more with Ozzy but his style is more close to his Badlands records.
If you get a good growling tone and whip out the Devil’s Stomp riff all heads WILL turn!
Bring on the RAMJAM baby!!
BEST ALBUM EVER!!!!!
Gave a thumbs up even before the video started 😂
Jake is 🥰🤯
My singer in 94 john west sang for Jake after Ray died . 4 tracked stuff that i have never released.
Thanks for this lesson and perfect timing as i was trying to play along with some Badlands songs just last night 🤘.
What delay setting are you using for "Sun Red Sun"?
Riot/Fire Down Under (1981); UFO/Mechanix (1982) and Badlands (1989) belong on the same playlist!
Such a great band. Sadly done over by Paul O and screwed by Atlantic records
Gillen could sound like Ian astbury of the cult on that dusk album. I guess you have done the cult lessons need to look those up.
Typical treatment of Jake by Ozzy/Sharon. They've done that to so many musicians.
Jake pt.2..The chords of Red Dragon Cartel!?
Dreams In the Dark.
Listen closely to Dancing on the Edge and you can hear a Zippo lighter flip at beginning.
This lesson KICKS ASS
I’ve played Last Time so many times, and I’ve never really been in a relationship lol.
Great band, Jake’s playing was spectacular…a shame Atlantic took their records out of circulation….
If there was justice in the world Badlands would have been the biggest band or the world. Maybe it would have happened or the first album came out two years earlier.
7:56 Funny you saying that, because a "Funky D" is what got Badlands in trouble in the end

jake is bad to the bone do some rdc
So Phil McKnight's guitar company stole the name for 80s guitars. Wow nice. Ozzy owes half his soul to all his guitarists.
I tell all my friends to listen to Badlands but they are all idiots.
Over compressed guitar today! Can't hardly hear what you play....
You are a really great player. But your amp sounds like a tin can. Its what $299? Spring for a real amp bro. Just saying…
