These videos are the best! Pro tip: slow speed down to 50% so you can hear each note in the embellishments. A bonus of doing that is that Matt sounds blitzkrieg drunk when you do this, so there's some good entertainment value there.
Just a thank you comment to keep your algorithm happy. I'm two weeks away from resurrecting my Scotland the Brave rendition for a Burns night here in Panama. My playing is awful and my pipes are bargain basement but regardless my audience appreciates the effort. I think I'll be referring back to this video a number of times. Thanks for the inspiration.
Brilliant level of detail in your explanation here! Gives me hope that I might actually be able to learn this when I finally get back to learning to play. Cheers.
Really enjoying this! Especially the walk down exercises. Wanted to wait till I was ready to learn this special song. A year and 3 months to be precise.
I play the cello and a bit of piano, no "breathing" instruments for me! That said, the bagpipes are one of my absolute favorite instruments. I love the sound, the look, the history, and the music. I so enjoyed watching this video, and now I want a practice chanter, just to try something new. What an awesome video! Subscribed, and must watch all the videos! You have a great teaching style, Matt.
Oh, it appears that there are several (?) types of bagpipes. I don't know a thing about that...I do know that I've never heard a bagpipe I didn't love. 🥰
It's crazy how complicated the pipes can be🤔 I just play in passing & in no way would truly TRY to get any further to play publicly (though some friends have asked)...so I kindly decline...until I can get the grace notes & other necessary embellishments right🤔
Hi Matt. First thanks so much for the way you teach the instrument. It helps me to improve very fast and perfectly completes the lessons I have here in France with my bp teacher. One question : in one of your videos you talk about the 8 or 10 traditional tunes we have to play perfectly on the practice chanter before turning to the bagpipes: what is the list of theses tunes? I guess there is Amazing Grace, The water is wide...what else? Thanks a lot again for your help. Pascal ( Auld Alliance pipeband in Aubigny/ France)
There is no specific list of tunes. It’s more about having a good amount of material learned and memorized so you will have enough mental capacity left to tackle all the difficulties of a full set of pipes. If you’re still more concerned about what fingers are down for an E or how to play a grip, you wont be able to focus on breathing and bag control. 👍👍
Hi Matt, Thank you for your videos and instruction. I’m still on the practice chanter but am considering a set of small pipes. May I ask what set you are using at the end of the video? Thanks again 🙏
Hi Matt, thanks a lot for all your videos. You realy are a good teacher, and I hope one day I'll be good enough to buy myself a skype lesson with you... I also was wondering, what brand is your practice chanter, I have a McCallum long but can't tune it properly and am quite unsatified with it...
My main practice chanter is a 2001 MacLellan cocobolo, but they no longer make practice chanters. I also have both an R. G. Hardie long blackwood chanter as well as an ES Session Chanter I reviewed here: ua-cam.com/video/OSzf0WSKRzo/v-deo.html
what kind of small pipes are you playing?? I’m getting ready to order some & trying to get as much info as possible….I’m currently learning this tune, you are an amazing instructor!
I am IN NO WAY ready for this BUT, out of curiosity, how do people choose a set of Highland pipes? I ask, because there are so many different kinds and made out of so many different materials and come from so many different places.Do they just go online and go these look pretty and I want to get these, or is there some other reasoning behind it? Unless you have already created one, that might be a really interesting discussion topic for a video!
There’s many things that make someone pick there pipes ... just like shoes there’s name brands that lead someone to pick them (hardies, mccallums , Laurie’s, and more ) The type you want... (poly AB or rosewood) and the type Of parts for additional look ( nothing, metal, plastic, fake ivory , metal with engravings ) It’s your like and budget ..... my first was second hand wood cause they were cheap ... once I got interested I got poly set cause there tough and unlike wood it doesn’t dry out ... YES there is a difference in sound but in “my” opinion not enough to bother me while well experienced people well beg to differ ... similar to cane drone reeds and synthetic reeds , there is a difference but both are made and sell well , if one was the ultimate sounding why do people buy others??? Price is in the numbers(I’m tossing this out randomly )as p0 is plain plastic not even raked or combed, p1 has color and shape,p3 fake ivory ,p4 metal, p5 engraved metal ... AB is African Blackwood and ab0 to AB whatever is additional details too after reading this youll still be lost on which set and that’s the point .... it’s what you like and can afford .... only thing I can say with confidence is don’t by the cheap Pakistan pipes
Matt, first off let me say thank you for your utterly brilliant set of tutorials, explainers and other learning aids. I stumbled across your videos because I was looking for confirmation (or refutation) of my understanding of how to play a heavy D throw, and after about three hours of watching your channel I ended up on this video. I have never been happy about how my rendition of Scotland the Brave sounded, and thanks to you and the resources you provided I now understand what I was doing wrong. I have a question for you: what software do you use to do your music notation? Also am I wrong in thinking that the MP3 of Scotland the Brave on this page was produced by some sort of synthesizer? If it was a synth, what software was it? I think it might be a powerful learning aid for me. Thanks again!
Glad you are enjoying the channel! I use Finale 26 for writing out all the music, and then convert it to MIDI and export to Logic Pro X to render the various digital bagpipe sounds. I use to use a old school Quicktime MIDI instrument bassoon sound font for the pipes, but have since learned how to capture samples of my actual pipes. You can here my sampled bagpipe here: ua-cam.com/video/w9w5m9nuq0I/v-deo.html
@@MattWillisBagpiper Wow. That's an intense workflow! I was hoping for something easier, like "I use Celtic PIpes" but it's hard to argue with the results you're getting. Thanks again!
eBay can be rather hit or miss. Try a dedicated bagpipe retailer! Look up "bagpipe retailer" and your country and something should come up. Best of luck!

You're very welcome!
That trick regarding the last phrase step down practice helped me get the sound of the tune correctly. Thanks again for the help.
You got me through the walk down! I've been struggling for a while. Thanks, Matt!
Glad to hear it!

Thanks! Love my Tartan Wall!

What is the thing called that you’re using
That’s a practice chanter. More info on that here: bit.ly/BasicsPipes
What speed should this be played at at full tempo?
88-92bpm
Tried to buy a chanter off ebay but it never arrived.!!
