  • This is Part 3 of our Franna Crane project! We are working on finishing making the new boom lift cylinders and in this video we get all the parts machined and the cylinders assembled and painted. We show the step by step process of boring the rod eyes to size, machining the new bronze bushings and pins, machining the cast iron bearing, plus lots of hydraulic pressing before the cylinders get reassembled and painted! Stay tuned for the next video where we sort out the hydraulic oil and get the cylinders fitted back onto the crane.

My Stepfather (a great man) was a machinist for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and was trained by his father that had his own machine shop for 50+ years. He loves your videos as I do. He was honestly surprised and impressed when he found out by your video of how you started in your field. He could have swore that you were trained like him by starting out working in a shop as a young teenager.
He worked on really huge parts of Navy ships and I was fortunate to see him and others working on drive shafts and basically dozens of other ship parts that weighed several tons per part. When I cames to nuclear ships the tolerance is ridiculously tight. Like if specs say that a bolt takes 18 & 3/4 turns to come loose and it goes anymore or less the work stops and the reason needs to get a variance clearing to go on. To see such precision was fascinating to me, that it could be accomplished on such a huge scale.
    Bravo to you Curtis

Being a machinist for over 30 years I am always pleased to see someone pulling out all the stops to do the job correctly and without shortcuts. This is Kurtis and Karen's mantra. Every video I have watched from CEE shows jobs being completed as if they were doing them for themselves.

I used to work in a power station (four 120 MW reheat units and four 60 MW single heat boilers. Small by todays standards but physically huge machines. The 60s were reliable it the 120 units struggled with burst boiler tubes. We could never get all four running at the same time. Someone suggested we were not getting an even steam flow at low loads (especially during startup that we did every day). The solution was a much bigger blowdown valve on the final superheater. We used more water on startup but the blown tube problem was solved.
The huge question is why were managers content to put up with the failures for so long?
The good enough (ie bodge it) mentality goes through the whole business.

Back in the late 80's when I was in my late teens, I worked at a factory that made hydraulic cylinders of many types. What I saw you doing in the last video was what I used to do among other tasks.... assembly. Some pistons used o-rings, other times it was polyseals. Those were a bitch to put on. By the end of the day, you were covered in a pink assembly grease and your palms were all torn up. Hopefully you were able to get those done so you didn't have to do it the next day. Those chrome rods and pistons were matted to aluminum cylinders. They were for car carrier semis. This video brought back good memories of the people I worked with, by the trying times of raw hands. Thanks for the great video

Great job, Kurtis and Karen. When you just purchased the Lift Crane, I knew the boom cylinders needed to be refurbished. (From experience). What really surprised me was the electrical wiring harness. Regarding the hydraulic system... You will need to replace the displacement pump, hoses and any filters inline. In addition the reservoir tank will probably need to be cleaned out thoroughly. And any micro screens throughout the hydraulic system need to be replaced. After all you do have two brand new hydraulic cylinders. You don't want to ruin them. And if you're going to document all the repairs and the very high quality job you're doing... It's really going to help if you resell. If you don't sell then it's going to last you a very long time. The way I used to do was do a thorough job rebuilding and keep it awhile then sell it later for the price maybe even auction it. So good luck on the electrical wiring and the hydraulic system refurbish

It didn't stop everything, but they collected enough to stop major damage as best we could see. We had a 21 speed, synchromesh industrial gearbox, we had 8 magnetic plugs in it. We had a maintenance schedule every 3 years and they worked great. Had to drain the oil clean the inside of the box and fill with fresh oil. We took the old oil back to base and ran it through a centrifugal cleaner and used the oil in our test bay. See you guys next time, be safe and well.👍👍

It's really cool to see you do pretty much the whole process... I've seen most of these operations before, but usually, you're just fixing one thing, not making the whole part new.
Also, kind of amazing that you can drive these pneumatically...

Kurtis, here is a tip for your sandblast cabinet; put a smalle heater in or under the media container. It doesn’t need to be much, just a few watts. Reptile heaters work well for this, but I used to use an incandescent bulb. (15w Christmas tree light to be more specific. ) and a 24 Hur timer, set to run it a few hours during the night. This keeps it a few degrees above the ambient temp, and the condensation problems will be a thing of the past.

Gotta love those edge finders.... Back in the day I took a Tech school machining class and another student borrowed the instructors edge finder, chucked it up in a mill and turned it on without checking what RPM the mill was set at. I think the mill was set at somewhere around 3500 RPM and the edge finder literally exploded! The entire class spent the rest of the class crawling around on the floor looking for the pieces of that tool. The instructor was loosing his shit on the student and we were just about crying because we were laughing so hard. Just had to share that.....
