    I think the reason why ppl came at your video so hard is because you're Dominican. A lot of Dominicans reject their African ancestry. As I am sure you know 75% of the Dominican Republic is of African descent but Rafael Trujillo brain washed DR into thinking that black was something to be ashamed of which is no different than what slavery did to blacks in America. Had you been of another nationality ppl probably wouldn't have been so ignorant. Black Americans still don't seem to understand that black ppl can be found anywhere outside of Africa. My moms side is Afro-Honduran and when I speak Spanish ppl look at me like "oh shit"! Lmao good video!

    • @guillermone1
      @guillermone1 8 років тому +9

      +La Original-Sorry but the information you have been reading about Dominican racial identity is bias and not accurate. And before I dispute your figures can you please explain what you mean by "Dominicans are 75% African descent" I just want to make sure I understand correctly. Are you saying 75% of Dominicans look like you, a garifuna?

    • @guillermone1
      @guillermone1 8 років тому +5

      +La Original-Hey I am still waiting for your answer. What do you mean exactly that Dominicans are 75% of African descent?

    • @espanolguerra3943
      @espanolguerra3943 8 років тому +12

      +La Original It is more than 75% of Dominicans it is like 84% of all Dominicans have African ancestry and DNA testing has proved this but Dominicans are in denial. Most people in Latin America consider Dominicans to be Afro Caribbean or Caribbean people not Latinos.

    • @guillermone1
      @guillermone1 8 років тому +6

      +Espanol Guerra-Another ignorant remark. Perception and reality are two different things.

      Dominicanita Linda Actually Dominicans being Latino is very debatable. Most people in Latin Americans countries consider Dominicans Caribbean people and don't consider Dominican Republic as part of Latin America because it shares an island with Haiti in the Caribbean.
      Also it was the French who coined Latin America when they invaded Mexico on Cinco de Mayo. Really it was Napoleon III trying to create a new Latin Empire in the Americas. Remember the French lost Haiti and could careless about the Caribbean so the Dominicans Republic wasn't included.
      _____________________________________
      Jajajajajajajajajja
      Dominicanita Linda said
      In fact Dominicans are the EPITOME or HEART center of the Latin American world, since we were the first Spanish Capital in America & the based place to conquer & Latinized the Americas.
      _____________________________________
      Most Dominicans were just African slaves being Latinized by the Spanish. It wasn't the Dominicans Latinizing anyone because they were just slaves. It was the Spanish and Portuguese and French Latinizing people. Dominicans had nothing to do with it. Jajajajaja
      Dominican Republic wasn't even independent it was a slave nation. Jajajaja Most Latin Americans don't even consider Dominicans to be Latino because they are not from Latin America. Most Latin Americans consider Dominicans to be Sub Saharan African or Afro Caribbean or black people. Gente Negra.
      Dominican Republic is an insignificant island in the Caribbean that shares the island with Haiti. No people in Latin America care about a Caribbean island because it isn't of any importance.
      These wars left the Mexican Treasury nearly bankrupt. On July 17, 1861, Mexican President Benito Juárez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt payments would be suspended for two years.[5][6] In response, France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew, but France, at the time ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to establish a Latin empire in Mexico that would favor French interests, the Second Mexican Empire.
      Source Wikipedia Cinco de Mayo.
      Less than 1% of Mexicans have African ancestry and no where close to 10% statistic. It is actually around 4.7% of Mexicans who DNA would have African ancestry.

      Lola Rew:
      This conquistador is a racist, wannabe, so-called "white", who, like our racist presidents, is attempting to rewrite historical facts - as they pertain to American Indians, Africans, Australian Mongolians, Spaniards and yes, Hindi and Muslim East Indians who were placed on the Island of Hispaniola, now Haiti and the Dominica Republic, by The Dutch East Indian Company - by its Enslaving "rulers".
      If one analyses the nonsensical contradictions of his diatribes, one will discern the empty shrewdness of HIS innate sense of racism, bigotry and prejudices.
      Ignore the "retarded" ignoramus - to use a word or two from exerps of his AUTObiography.

      Most People Assume im Caucasian and Im Dominican ; including other Dominicans.Yet, when I tell them Im Dominican, I hear no, "Youre too White to be Dominican", or "you're really Dominican? Actually the only thing Ive heard was,, "You're too SERIOUS to be Dominican".. Because Apparently All Dominicans behave like the Wild ghetto lumpens that live in the lower income areas of the BX and Manhattan, that emulate that regressive African American culture/ Apparently, there are no Serious pundits among our ranks.Even though,We have the highest college grad per capita out of all Latino Groups in the US... I know plenty of young Dominican academics and Scholars who put these ignorant stereotypes to shame.. Especially in The Pro-Dominican NPO I participate in...We Dominicans only have one Identity as you stated and it is a cultural Identity (DOMINICAN) we are not a race-centric society,like most of Latin America (we celebrate all our ancestors)/ Though recently, the Pan-Africanist cultural imperialist have been trying to force black Dominicans to label themselves, AFRO-DOMINICANS, and betray their Mixed and White brothers in favor of their agenda and views; to force feed the One Drop rule on the first country (DR) in the western hemisphere to desegregate ,a Country who has never experienced jim crow or any other forms of American racism.Forming its first mixed race government by the 1700s..
      For a second,you had me with the title..I'm Glad to see that you aren't another Dominican American Traitor,Because its generally Dominicans raised in the States that are turning on their country/community ,brainwashed by the Cultural Marxist teachings of CUNY,the regressive LEFT (Neo-Liberalism) and the Anti-Dominican ; CUNY's Dominican Studies (More like, Cunys Pan-Africanist Brainwashing of weak willed Dominican twits) Who aim to force us to embody a black national idendity and betray 500 years of HIstory and culture, and merge with the Haitian Quilombo (Our historic enemies and Usurpers)..
      I see now that the title of your video was a bait and switch to pull in these same Pan-Africanist Dominican Bashers,Traitors and haters...Like we did with ThatsDominicans video, "Los Dominicanos Somos racistas" Which we (Dominican advocacy Coalition) Created along with Manuel by using his channel and fanbase to get our message across..
      I commend you for your mental fortitude; in your ability to break threw the psychological attacks and propaganda from these Vermin,especially as a black Dominican: their prime target.The same cant be said about Other Dominicans unfortunately,like the Pro-Haitian ,black Nationalists from WAAD (We are all Dominican) Pathetic group of losers and traitors with self-esteem issues/Whove become our favorite punching bag of late...Yet Continue to host Anti-Dominican events threwout the Cuny System..But piss themselves when we crash their parties,because their entire premised is based on fallacies and outright lies meant to demoralize our community and make it conform by the use of political correctness.
      Los blancos, morenos, cobrizos, cruzados, marchando serenos, unidos y osados, la Patria salvemos de viles tiranos, y al mundo mostremos que somos hermanos." - Juan Pablo Duarte.

      There's plenty of white people in Santo Domingo. You can find them in the central part of the city where all those high-rise residential buildings are at. Check out neighborhoods like Piantini, Naco, Evarista Morales, Los Cacicazgos, etc. Almost entirely white, even mulattos are rare in these parts. Santo Domingo's upper class is white for the most part, while the middle class and working class areas are comprised of mixed race people who are lighter than the girl in the video. The blackest and poorest people in Santo Domingo tend to concentrate in tourist trap areas like El malecon and Zona Colonial where they panhandle to foreigners, most of them come from the slums along the Ozama river.

      African americans get so mad when Latinos hold on their heritage. why?Latino is not a race is an ethnicity. Get over it. Shes 100% PR because both of her parents come from PR.IF she says shes 100% PR- obviously shes a product of that island's history. Why should she stop identifying with her culture, which is who she is. Over "black" which doesn't say much about her, just that she came from slavery.When she identifies as PR- shes painting a full picture of her family's history. I don't understand black nationlist. You can be a black nationalist if you want to, more power to you. But don't force your racist philosphy to other people

Come to think of it, why don't white Americans have to call themselves European Americans? If everyone else gets to choose what to call themselves, why not let people of African heritage get to choose for themselves too?
    Edit: this has been noted to be mostly be an American (U. S.) problem.

      That's the issue I have as an "African" American woman. Yes, I am black which to me means person of African descent. But I am African, Native American, and White European descent. But in USA it's like of you are darker than a certain color or your hair is a certain way you are not allowed to be anything else but Black or African American. When I try to explain why my family photos are from the whitest skin color to the darkest brown ppl roll their eyes and say you're Black. But they question if ppl in my family mainly mom and her siblings have the same parents since they're different colors. Ppl are ignorant to the fact that Hispanics, Latinos, and Blacks can be any color or have such a variety of features. Mainly because of Media and white washing of cultures and features. Ppl swear all Puerto Ricans are Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez forget Tego Calderon, Celia Cruz, Susana Baca, or Amara La Negra. She is beautiful, God Bless her and any others struggling this way. I want to just be American as she just wants to be Hispanic or Latina. It's a sick way to separate ppl.

But Ive only grown up truly identifying as Dominican (the mix of all those thigns) bc thats my experience (eat, drink, music, language, customs) so I cant genuinely say I'm arabic when I dont even know how to identify it as my grandpa died before i was even born. I dont hide it but I dont use it as a descriptor.. I'm simply Dominican and no one should have an issue with how anyone identifies.. as that is deeply personal

      Cecille it's most likely due to white immigration directly from Spain, which is recent, in terms of historical years. So I'm pretty sure you're just white but born in DR. Don't take this as an insult it's not. Calling yourself an afro Dominican, is like a white person from American calling themselves European American like no shit you're white and your from America.
      Spanish is a nationality meaning you're from Spain and it is also the language you speak. Latino is a culture you inherit when you are born in a Latin country such as DR. Race is: black, white and Asian whichever you look like is the one you are identified with.
      Hispanic/latino/Spanish isn't a damn race. You come in all shades *because* you guys are *different* races. How hard is that to understand? Not directed at you but in general to all Latinos.

    But Hispanic isn't a race though. That only means your a person from a latin country. (Latin country which was colonized by white Spaniards) If you're a person of color hispanic isn't you're race just you're culture.
    Hearing black Dominicans saying their Spanish is like hearing black Americans saying their English.

      Funny thing is the the Whites try to do black people which is to consider yourself JUST British/ English or just French as opposed to Afro/ black British/English or Afro/ black French. Mind you it's obvious they can t deny their racial category. Even America is trying to get us to do it. JUST be American.

    Hey Monica! I’m glad you’ve made this video to hopefully help someone that’s probably struggling with their appearance. I’m Black (FBA) American and was born and raised in STL. I moved to the East cost and was told I looked Dominican. Since the mid-west doesn’t have a large Spanish population, I really didn’t know what that meant, “looking like a Dominican.” I just went to the DR last year for the first time for my wedding anniversary and I still didn’t figure out what “looking like a Dominican” means. All I saw was “Black People” (light & dark) on the island that spoke Spanish. I guess what I’m trying to say is that some people like to put you in a labeled box. However, I’ve learned that no one can tell me who I am or can label me as I am what I am. You either can accept me or kick rocks. Stay strong and be blessed. P.S. - since my DR trip I’ve been learning Spanish again. 😁 ✌🏾

And if you want to see a racial sampling of their ancestors, check out Haiti. The Haitian people are unmixed, pure unadulterated black. Just check them out one day and you will see the differenc. It is the most homogenous black nation in the western hemisphere.

Does that mean i have to classify my self as african american? No. and honestly where im from in DR most of the people are dark skin.. I dont understand why skin color is so important to you guys. in dr you're just dominican, black or white. Dominicans are mostly of African descent but they are ashamed of their black side and only embrace their indigenous or white side. Even dark skin Dominican refused to acknowledge black side. That is why Dominicans do not get along with Haitians. Be happy, you do not have to prove anything to anybody.

    I really needed this video. Thank you so much for taking the time to address something I have been struggling with for so long. I am black and Cuban but unfortunately I wasn't raised in Cuba so I had a huge identity crisis. I hated getting comments about how I didn't look latina so I was labeled just another black girl who tried too hard to speak Spanish. It was usually negative experiences within the black community. My black friends didn't understand why I would rather listen to Spanish music over hip hop or rap. So I subscribed to your channel because you are a darker latina and for once I felt represented. ❤💙

      MsJazzy604 What type/kind of Cuban...cuz Cuban is not a race. If your Dad is Afro Cuban...then honey...you are black. Who's nationality is Cuban.
      If he's white/Euro Cuban...then you are mixed cuz one parent is a total different race. If he's mixed 50/50...then you are still black due to DNA percentage of 56% or more of one full race. If he's mixed with white, black, Indian or Asian....then you are mixed due to your mother being black and it's only 50% of one full race. Hope that helps cuz Cuban is not a race.

      @Sumi757 the most racist? We literally had a so-called black as president in the 1850's. We became a nation in the 1840's when we freed ourselves from Haiti. There are far more racist Spanish speaking countries. But, is there racism in the DR? Yes but a few and light, but it does not compare to the many other places.

    Amen Sista!! My life's story being Panamanian and not speaking Spanish fluently. At 51 I am still dealing with the prejudice from the Hispanic community. I have to remind people that Spaniards did not marry Indian women they raped them . Along with African women that is the only reason many Hispanic have light skin. I am also Black Mother African American and A Panamanian father who's ancestors were just dropped off in Panama instead of the us. It is very shameful that why a dark child could be born to light skinned parent and every Hispanic has some very dark people in the family line. It is hilarious to watch Hispanics take DNA test and them being shocked they had a lot of African DNA in them. I say it is 2016 people need to grow the heck up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for being a positive role model for the young girls who will go throw it and have hatred for their African Heritage.

    Dominicans are a lost Afro Latina/Latino Community of people. This due to the fact that they lived side by side with their masters, and seldom viewed themselves as slaves, but servants.
    Dominicans, truly embraced their position during their true period of slavery, that they viewed themselves as Spanish citizens, not Dominicans slaves. Because during the periods of slavery on the island the sugar industry gave way to cattle farming, which did not require the slave owners to herd their property as did the Americans.
    Today, Dominicans view Haiti as a backward nation. When in fact, Haiti, is more forward thinking that the Dominicans, because the people in Haiti embrace their African heritage,
    and they, like the Afro American, know who they are, as well as what they are. They embrace and hang on to their African heritage. Which is really strange, because in villages around the Dominican side of the island, many Dominicans still perform many African rituals and songs.

      You are incorrect, Haitians are "Latino", only due to the fact that they use French, which is one of the "romantic" languages of Latin.
      Dominicans can learn a great deal from Haitians on the subject of accepting their African ancestors.

      +Kenny E-Dominicans have nothing to learn. It is you who needs to learn about Dominican racial identify. And I am going to give you lesson #1.Dominicans who have African heritage DO NOT neglect their black ancestry because of "the days of colonization when white Europeans were superior and as such desirable object of identification". What Dominicans all deny is the IDEOLOGY of pure black heritage IMPOSED upon them by Haitian forces who invaded the DR during the 1822-1844 occupation by a foreign culture that ATTEMPTED ETHNOCIDE upon Dominicans.

Is because you believe everything in the news you don't know the come up that's happening. the only reason why haiti is poor is because we're so proud of the culture and respect it took to be free,all the other countries cut us off. Think I'm lying every mainstream movie that mentions the name of haiti they say we do voodoo 24/7 & don't go there.Its all garbage to feed your unconsciously. But keep sleeping on us

      guillermone1 True. It depends on how much time you've spent in the United States and how much of the culture you've adopted. There's a certain friendliness that Dominican people have. Americans have a twist of arrogance. Even if the American is not native born. It just infects the person despite where they are from.

      dorifrederick I can see your point. I am speaking from the perspective of a white American guy from the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Dominicans might seem really nice to me (especially the women) because they may treat me different than Latinos. Americans seem arrogant to me because I am one and look like a common dude to them. There is also racial tension between blacks and whites in the U.S. because of history and our system is built on so called white idealism which many claim is the cause of white privilege. Dominicans have no such history with white Americans so there is no racial tension. I've also been told that Dominicans and other Latino in their countries view white skin as beautiful where in U.S. its just plain and ordinary. Here in the U.S. I'm just some dude. But in Dominican Republic I'm The American Man and I feel like the king of the world.

    • @guillermone1
      @guillermone1 8 років тому

      I think you got a pretty accurate perspective of reality. But funny that you say that. I am a predominately Caucasian male, dark skin Latino, sort of a Mediterranean type. I grew up all of my life in the North East USA and all those white-Anglo girls thought I had some sort of an exotic appeal, and it was not at all unusual for them to go googly-goo for me as if I were something special. Then I moved to the predominately the Latino areas of south Florida where guys like me were a dime a dozen. Well to make a long story short, I suffered one hell of a culture shock. The girls would not even give me the time of day. For the first time in my life I had a hard time getting a date. I had to drop my standards, and went out with girls that were at the bottom half on the list of female rejects.

    I'm Puerto Rican and I'm super white. But I have Puerto Rican friends that are very dark. Puerto Rican's and domincans are very similar because they come in a lot of different beautiful shades. I used to think Dominicans were all dark but then I got older and met a lot of my Dominican friends, some are white and blonde and some are tan with thick hair. And some are dark with thicker hair. I love how diverse our nationalities are. It's perfect.

      Deborah Camacho Puerto Ricans don't share an island with Haiti
      Puerto Ricans are white lady. Check out the information online I am white and yes in Puerto Rico there's some blacks because of thousands of illegals from Dominican Republic those are facts

    • @dhazelcamacho
      @dhazelcamacho 6 років тому +40

      Robert THE GREAT WOLF just because Puerto Rico doesn't share an island with doesn't mean there's no black Puerto Ricans. Not all Puerto Rican's are white. That was a very silly statement to make. I know a lot of Puerto Rican's who are dark. And no they're not any bit of Dominican. If you've ever been to Puerto Rico , you might see. But don't say anything is facts if you're just saying things that don't make sense. If you're coming with "facts" , then you should bring sources.

    • @dhazelcamacho
      @dhazelcamacho 6 років тому +16

      Robert THE GREAT WOLF okay so I just did some research. And the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico were not white. They were Taino and Carib Indian tribes. They were not black but they certainly weren't white. And depending on who they are mixed with, families carry different skin colors. And as it shows online, Dominican Republic was also inhabited by tainos. Haiti as well. I don't know much about Haiti. But I do know about Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. And they are very similar. The only thing I really haven't seen is Puerto Rican's that look 100% black with the hair type as well. They're really dark just like any black person but with straight to wavy hair. Which I believe comes from the taino background. Whereas Dominican Republic has more variety when it comes to black hispanics. But in a broad scale when it comes to skin color, Puerto Rican's have of every skin color just as Dominican Republic. But Dominican Republic has more diversity when it comes to features. I've seen Dominicans with tan skin, thick curly hair and green eyes. With tan skin hazel eyes and dirty blonde hair. White skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. And dark skin , dark curly hair and brown eyes. And so much more. But for Puerto Rican's they mostly either have brown, hazel or green eyes. I've never seen a Puerto Rican with blue eyes. And they either have blonde, red or brown or black hair. Either curly but smooth, wavy, or straight. Never seen the thick curly hair.

The folks who have this idea of "why can't you just be black" .. are usually projecting their OWN in-abilities / insecurities on not being able to self identify in the larger global landscape .. In a sense forcing others to lessen the pride they have in their non-American heritage. I agree to an extent. But we can't deny that there is a undercurrent of disdain towards black americans from non black people and from non American black people. I think a lot of black American people are used to people not wanting to associate themselves with us for fear of being looked down upon all the while borrowing our clout and culture. I think race is handled a lot differently in the U.S. than it is in some other places where black people live. We expect all black to be on the same team but instead this black hierarchy is created in which we find ourselves at the bottom of in our country. It is sometimes us placing everyone else above ourselves , but as I said before, there is no denying that some black people from other countries will often turn their noses up at us. I think we all need to acknowledge that that schism exist and how we contribute to it then work to fix it.
