The best way to add a feeling of history to your buildings? How I added a ghost sign to my building

  • The old brewery tower on Station Road has a ghost sign down the front to add that little bit of extra character to the centrepiece building on my N Scale model layout of a West Yorkshire town set in 1993.
    I used the software Inkscape to add the ghost sign and to design the curved window frames at the top of the building.
    In this episode I show how I made the ghost sign for the building. I also show how you can adapt the "Sticky Label Method" to make arched window frames, and I give you some tips on how I use a steel rule to get really crisp folds on my card buildings.

    A master class for sure. This is a gift to all modelers whether you're working a railroad layout or not... You have created a stunning layout. I'm surprised there aren't more people subscribing to this channel. I did... though I don't have a model railroad...

    Fabulous Michael. The town is really coming alive - well, as much as a run down West Yorkshire town in the 1990s can come alive. I was at Bradford Uni in the late 70s so feel very much at home with the grime, stone facades and general depravation. I loved it and I love this! Thank you, Rob.

      Most Inkscape tools to be honest are not viewer friendly in terms of the newcomer to Inkscape. Videos on GIMP are even worse. Of course my issue is l have been too deeply embedded in AutoCAD.

    Michael Great work, yes this buildings is coming on great. The Ghost Sign instruction part is great. Liking how you personalising the Shipley Tower for Chandwell and Foxton’s, this ties in the Foxton branding already on the layout. There a subtle nod to Unicorn Brewery, but so Chandwell but understated. Ian

    Looks superb. But difficult to see easily what went into each layer of the front face. I am guessing the cover layer for the outer card was wrapped around both inner & outer card layers. Then the windows stuck on behind.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  7 місяців тому +3

      Yes exactly that. I’ve done quite a few videos on layering so I decided to keep the detail light on this one and focus on the ghost sign instead.

    Dear Michael, intricate explanation on adding masks. Never heard it so plainly put. Was wondering on the restaurant’s windows, but as you said, next week you will show the frontage for the restaurant. Then I suppose all will come together! Anyhow, it’s not to criticize, nevertheless as I watched you turn around the different walls of the glued up building, those large windows at the bottom seemed a bit bleak next to the rest of the building. Definitely is in need for a superb frontage. Cheerio

    Great job as always, Michael! I've done that using clear decal paper, and then painting some "wash" (very watered down paint), but its been a while. I had to laugh when I saw the Lego figure. It really gives perspective to how the massive-looking Chandwell layout is a bit of an optical illusion. But that's part of the fun, right? Trying to create a look that fools the eye? Thanks as always for sharing!

    • @Chandwell

      Thank you very much indeed! Yes, it was an Anne Peak applicator. I have two of them and they are very old. I dread the day that they fail on me as she no longer seems to be in business. They are singularly the best tool I've ever had the pleasure of using. I think the tips can still be bought from Smart Models.

    Great video as always. I wondered if you could slow down a bit when running through the Inkscape tutorial bit. Having seen Inkscape being used by a few modellers I have had a go with some success but struggle to get it to do what I want so like to closely follow your guidance.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi Ian. Thank you. It’s always a struggle to include Inkscape into my weekly videos. If I go slow enough for people newer to the application to follow, the video becomes long and regular viewers drop away. But if I make it fast enough to show “I did this,” then people like yourself could find it frustrating. I’ve thought about this a lot and I am definitely going to start a new “zero to hero” Inkscape tutorial series that will go though every tool and technique I use, step-by-step until we have made a building together. I think it will become a valuable body of work for those who are interested, and be easily ignored by those who are not. I’ve not yet decided how best to present this but I hope to have something started in the next few weeks.

      @@Chandwell That sounds great Michael. One of the particular things I tried and failed to do in Inkscape was with an alley scene, taking Scalescenes cobble texture from the horizontal baseboard curving it to the vertical where it attached the backboard. I had hoped to compress the cobbles by varying amounts to give perspective. It works OK but could've been so much better if I could do that. Maybe something to include in one of your tutorials. Ian

    Just a thought: will Chandwell have a school, preferably an old Victorian primary school with the traditional separate entrances for boys and girls?

    • @Chandwell

      No, I am afraid not. There was not a school right in the centre of Chandwell or near the Chander. Funny you should mention though, I would love to build an old Victorian school, so it may come once I finish the layout and start making little Chandewell dioramas.

      It has been very therapeutic indeed. I love to sit and while away the hours making these models (and the associated videos). They keep me sane. Cutting out bits of card is so different from what I do for a day job it's the perfect way to switch off for an hour or two every day.
