- Crash test car vs semi trailer truck
IIHS ran two 35-mph crash tests : one with an AngelWing side underride protection device from Airflow Deflector Inc. and a second test with a fiberglass side skirt intended to improve aerodynamics, not to prevent underride. The results were dramatically different. In both tests, a midsize car struck the center of a 53-foot-long dry van trailer. In the AngelWing test, the underride guard bent but didn’t allow the car to go underneath the trailer, so the car’s airbags and safety belt could properly restrain the test dummy in the driver seat. In the second test with no underride guard for protection, the car ran into the trailer and kept going. The impact sheared off part of the roof, and the sedan became wedged beneath the trailer. In a real-world crash like this, any occupants in the car would likely sustain fatal injuries.

As a truck driver with 14yrs of experience, I'll be happy to inform the public that the fiberglass skirts on semi trailers is for fuel economy/aerodynamic purposes only. Side impact protection would be a nice addition to all trailers but I doubt I'll see it regularly.
The trucking companies such as Schneider would lobby the fuck out of congress and local governments before they allowed this. Although the regulatory bodies themselves probably have the power to do it without approval.
I would image it weighs a fair bit but I would assume you could potentially make it out of aluminum and have a similar effect.
Personally I’d like to see it more so because when driving next to a semi, I’m always afraid something might happen where either the semi swerves or I swerve and then I wind up under the trailer and get crushed by the back wheels like in 2 Fast 2 Furious lol. That’s why I always either follow or quickly pass a semi, I never drive next to them for more than 3 seconds.
Cheaper for a few lives to go rather than change a small thing on millions of trailers.
@@ibooogeymani9380 unfortunately you're right.

People who are saying use the same thing as on the rear of the trailer, but isn't this essentially the same concept with with an aerodynamic skirt attached to it?
The first crash could've been prevented if the driver wasn't such a dummy.

Moral of the story, don’t drive under a semi trailer.

I've watched lots of these vehicle crash test videos and never knew where the car was coming from. Thanks to this video I now know that there's a long acceleration tunnel that it comes from. Also, why they decided to crash a car into the side of a trailer with air deflectors installed is beyond me. They're not designed to provide any protection for vehicles striking them, unless of course your vehicle is made of air.
From a pure liability standpoint every company that has semis should install these on their fleet. It may cost 10-20K extra per trailer, but one lawsuit can run into into the millions of dollars in legal fees, lost time, and bad press even if you win. Also the greatly reduced insurance premiums would probably pay for itself in the life of the rig.
These shouldn't be on every trailer. I've seen trailer skirts get destroyed by being bottomed out on things.
Imagine trying to cross a railroad with one of these.
I’ve actually seen a car accident where this happened. FYI I didn’t see the body it was draped over with white sheets however there was blood on the sheets from when the wind making the sheets wave in the interior it was a fatality for sure cause the freeway was shut down. I have a huge respect for first responders go firemen / medics!
The white shets over body give it away
In Europe side impact guards are mandatory on trucks. I find it really strange that this is not the case in he otherwise safety conscious USA. This setup is very dangerous for passenger car drivers. Also the autonomous emergency braking in newer cars might not “see” the truck until it is too late.
Are you kidding? The safety requirements for trucks regarding protecting cars in crashes range from ridiculous to non-existent in the USA. Rear bumpers are a joke at best. Truckers can put wheel nuts in the shape of long and super sharp spikes in the front wheels, like if they were Roman war chariots.
@@adb012those "wheel nuts" are nothing more than shoody plastic covers for the actual lug nuts. They can be broken by just breathing on them hard enough.

Very clever design. Im not gonna sit here and analyze it for you but it appears the Forces are displaced throughout the trailer causing little to no deformity at all. Every simi should have this, no exceptions.
Comparing fiberglass skirts to braces is apples and oranges. Fiberglass skirts are used for a list of reasons that have nothing to do with side impacts.
they aren't even side impact skirts they are for "fuel efficiency" but the biggest problem is the car seem to have a lack of protection but it looks like people will continue to blame capitalism?, no Idea why that is a blame and the driver for trying to make money in an already over regulated field.
Fun Fact: That fiberglass design isn't meant to stop a 35 MPH side impact like that. It's supposed to prevent cars traveling alongside the trailer from getting stuck underneath it. it's not poorly designed, they're just testing it for something it wasn't designed to handle.
Huh?? Sucked-in??
Those skirts were literally invented to make trailers more aerodynamic so the truck could save fuel. Nothing else. Also the only time a car would get stuck under a trailer would because of the result of another accident, or if someone blew a tire and lost control.
If only they had this technology when Ed Truck died. May he rest in piece.
Peace not piece.

Don't you love how trucks are at the perfect height for decapitation?
Approved now I want all my trucks with that protection.
At least you get that dope bagged look 😎
Who else has the 2009-2010 Malibu and got chills down your spine watching this?
Good idea only problem is with those side skirts on there you're bound to get stuck on railroad tracks in and Out of delivery Bays. They sit too low the truck will get hung up in many places. Ive been to stops and crossings where just the fiberglass skirts were dragging on the ground. Now add the metal brace and your stuck on the tracks
Thanks so much for testing the Chevy! I have one and almost crashed it like that the other day, now I know to be careful
This protection method should be applied to vehicles

These " Angel Wing " safety barriers should MANDATORY on all trailers
There is a bill to make that happen in Congress Right Now.
The only problem with that safety feature on the trailer is it adds a couple of thousand pounds of weight to the trailer thus the trailer cannot carry more cargo and will have to carry less cargo.
Better than having people die
My Mx-5 can pass under that truck....LOL

The problem is that most cars will not.

Bro irl car and a semi truck that's pain i even feel the pain dude!
@Jeohan Antonio Miami what the fuck did you say
This is precisely why truck trailers in the UK and Europe have had guards between the trailer wheels and tractor since the 80s!
Great way to make any car a convertible
School buses already solved this issue, their frames are about 3 feet up, but they have steel side skirts that help prevent cars from diving under the bus. The skirts bend in the impact to dissipate energy & create an angled impact surface rather than a hard edge that decapitates the car passengers.
Everyone’s thinking I’m just gonna duck down if it ever happens to me.
Trucking companies ought to watch this video.
doubt they'll put this for everytruck, more weight therefore more fuel consumption and cost for both installing it and running with it.
thaik56 The aerodynamic improvement over having nothing there would more than cancel out the weight difference. And when comparing against the lightweight aero ones while hauling a loaded trailer, the weight of the supports wouldn't noticeably hurt fuel economy
thaik56 not just that, it puts us at higher risk for high centering on things like railroad tracks or even some docks. great idea, but with some stone age road and building designs it won't work for drivers right now until everything else is changed
won't be able to do a thing when IHIS makes it mandatory
thaik56 could this increase arrow dynamics?
thaik56 weight offset by better aerodynamics - actually comes out ahead for long haul fuel efficiency

*I'm Mr. Meeseeks, look at me.*
why their using every single time chevy malibu for trailer crash tests
For 2 reasons 1.) They want to use the same car in each test to limit changeable variables in each test, which guarantees uniform test results every time and 2.) the Malibu represents a typical sedan; a normal car that most people drive. More people drive midsize sedans compared to say, sports cars or hatchbacks
Whether you like malibus or not, they got the top safety rating of this year in its class. They used it because theoretically no vehicle would perform better than the top safety pick. So if the safest vehicle does poorly they know for a fact somethings wrong lol.
Metehan Ckr GM products are worthless pieces of junk
So are you dumbass
Payne Stancil or GM be slipping them extra cars for this type of testing in exchange fire safety ratings. I mean I doubt it but it wouldn’t surprise me either.
I like how Consumer Reports lobbies the government to force car companies to install backup cameras on every vehicle including small coupes/sedans, but what about something that can actually save lives like this?
These make me never wanna drive a car again
Than don’t🤣🤣🤣
It should be illegal for trucks to be going around without those safety measures
Ricardo Morales truckers would moan about the added weight, but they would answer without semi drivers you wouldnt have anything and so on wich is true but yup you are right they should all have that
Ricardo Morales stupid drivers should be illegal
Top of all not all accidents are a drivers fault? Brakes go out, steering goes out, and other technological errors don't be so quick to judge
Adam Faust.
Rarely brakes go out, rarely steering goes out.
Very often common sense and brains go out.
Rob, lost and late. It can always be the truck drivers faults. Example you have a Green and he runs a red and you side swipe him
Wow all truck drivers and truck companies should put angelwing on their trucks to prevents any harmful damages.
Epic face plant. I'd be safer off with a pickup truck like a Ford F-150 which is a top safety pick
Get a dump truck from a mine
And this is why I refuse to get near a semi at all-if I’m relaxed while driving the minute I see a semi near me I am tense as hell and on alert and I make it my mission to get away IMMEDIATELY!
Also make sure to stay away from their tires cause they could take off your head
first one was instant lowrider xD
Note to self, duck when going under a trailer.
I wanna know where IIHS gets all the 2009/10/11 Malibus from
I'm pretty sure they just buy them from local dealers
They pull them out of thin air
Tons of used ones around, fleet auctions, etc.
They buy them in used car dealers, manufacturers, does not furnish cars
Probably the own brands like chevrolet gives them the cars-
The panels on the underside of the trailers is NOT meant as a safety measure, but is for fuel economy. HOwever, I do think that manufacturers should put beams (like they have on the back) on the sides of trailers too to stop vehicles from going under, or at least stopping a vehicle from completely going under a trailer. But those trailer "flaps" are NOT meant as a safety mechanism. They are strictly for fuel economy.

Why do us truck trailers not also have by law the crash rails down the sides of the trailer (in addition to the rear) as we do here in the UK and I assume all of Europe?

For those of you don't know, or are too lazy to research, trailer skirts were originally invented to improve aerodynamics. They have NOTHING to do with safety.

on a serious note, amazing tests, so fiber glass covers basically endanger the drivers
To be fair the fiberglass is literally for nothing other than aerodynamics and fuel it's an aerodynamics and fuel economy that's it. Unfortunately gently not the truckers but the owners of the trucks that a lot of these structures work for and the companies who own the trailers don't care about the safety of the public all they care about is that their cargo gets where it needs to go and they get paid truck drivers are decent people they work hard And it's a grueling job.
They 99.9% of the time when you don't own the trailer jis rayla just the rag.
We've had truck side barriers in Europe for decades, I guess the US doesn't really care about driver safety, just about money. Sad really.
American capitalism is the worst form of capitalism.
Nope, we don't care about driver safety here in the US. That's why there are no seat belts, no safety glass windshields, no airbags, no padded dashboards, no roll cage designs, no crash testing, nothing of any kind that has anything to do with driver safety. We don't even need drivers licenses. Just a huge-ass American capitalist free for all.
GreenJavelin well it doesn't play out in the stats. 10.9 fatalities per 100,000 people in the US and 2.9 per 100,000 in the UK for instance, odd that...
Yeah ya'll drive like grandmas over there. Can confirm.
Yeah. ok. lol. We've got things called bends in Europe and judging by most American's complete lack of ability when it comes to something other than a straight line, we're far better at driving, I mean not one of you can drive a Mustang without spinning out on a straight, what makes you think you could even take a corner faster than your grandma? My grandma can drive better than you guys, and she's not got a licence and she's dead...

Angel wing is the only option. But for 100k one can buy a senator and save millions in gas/extra weight and purchase of the systems. All the lives that could of been saved are worth less the 100k. Welcome to USA.
It would be good if we started with more basic things like mandating more-than-decorative rear bumpers and prohibiting the 10-inch killer spike nuts for the front wheels.
