When I was at uni the medical students were always cockier and quite arrogant. I recall one of them taking the piss out of a 'lesser' dental student saying 'dentists are just wannabe doctors'. This was at one of the top uni's in the country. Let me tell you, that dental student is having the last laugh. Many of them are practice owners living six to seven figure lifestyles driving Porsches.
@@fathia2128 Hey, don’t ever change and I’ll find people like you to be friends with and you’ll find people like me. I’m glad I’m not the only person who’s upset by this.
This was a really interesting vid, I've never seen anyone talk about this topic! I'd also say about the "superiority complex" business is that a lot of med schools are very separate to the rest of the university (at bart's it's literally like a separate uni) and a lot of the med schools are historically very prestigious so I think the culture has really continued since med schools merged into universities. Then again you have the positive side that this leads to a strong supportive environment because of how close you are to your peers. Great video mate :)
the system rewards low quality volume and bad behaviour - superbly well put. its dreadful. in my experience, med school is also often physically isolated from other students. the medical schools can be out of the way on campus, the faculty not mixing, the societies ring-fenced off, term times different, number of years different (meaning they cluster to live together so they aren't left alone upon graduation of their BA/BSc 3-year peers). aside from all you said, I think this leads to a culture of isolating and in-grouping that holds medics apart from many others. something ive seen as a BSc, a lecturer and as a medical student at 3 campuses.
Another truth bomb, good stuff Ollie. Unfortunately these sorts of politics will carry over to working life. Learn how to maneuver well, set boundaries and try your best to have a bit of a laugh about it if there's a lot of hot air going about. Some can be complete asses and slave drivers, but some can also be fantastic role models and teachers. Honestly lucky to say there's a continued move towards less rigid hierarchies and more open learning from consultants. Imo med school can reveal to you what sort of doctor someone will be in the future. Healthcare is full of hardships without internal fighting. Keep your character in check people so we can continue having more good role models that others can emulate - what you put in is what the system will keep putting out. We're all gonna slip up, but make damn sure that doesn't become a common occurrence.
I was wondering Ollie if you might give us some insight on a similar topic of why some senior doctors can be mean (and how to deal with it, though I hope you've never had to lol) I'm applying for 22 entry and that's something I am kind of scared of haha. Great video as always!
Interesting but like... I dunno people in law also have conversations with colleagues that most are unlikely to have yet they exhibit this type of behavior much less
It's thankfully only a very small number of people that this really affects, and certainly hasn't been the case at my med school. Some schools do have more of a reputation for this than others.
Are medical students nasty to each other ? I understand your point about putting yourself through intense pressure - however a medical student wouldn’t want to jeopardise another medical student intentionally - or would they? I am worried about the culture in medical schools now
It's definitely not in my experience something to be worried about! It's just unfortunately something that we know does happen, I think largely because the system lends itself to people doing that.

Anyone can become a doctor in dumbed down Britain.

If I was that dentist guy I'd laughed about all this med cockie school bully boys. JR Drs get shit pay and dentist make a fortune.
This aspect of medical school frightens the shit out of me :(
same 😭 i literally just wanna do my best, make friends and be a good doctor 😭 i’m terrified of getting caught up in the negatives

Really interesting talking about this side of med school. It's important to know the pros and the cons.

Thanks for saying what needed to be said. Grads need to support changing the system while they are in training and even after they finish!
This is one of my favourite video titles ever 😂😂
Mate I've got something so spicy brewing for the next couple of weeks

Don't forget the volume of contact hours is high which means they see each other a lot which can promote a bond
So so interesting thank you for this! Something to be wary of going into medicine

Oli obviously wasnt popular enough to get on the Scrubs committee 🤣

a very diplomatic answer
Did you go to grammar school Ollie?
I did not - went to a very average state comprehensive
God complex and arrogance 🤔
Unwarranted God complex and arrogance - the academic standard is quite low.
