Victor Victor Victor - Hi John. I’m very excited for Eternals and already have my tickets for Saturday. But as of this me writing this it’s fallen to just 53% on RT. It was already the lowest rated MCU film ever, but now it might end up being their first negatively reviewed movie if this slide continues. Without spoilers, what would you say it the one thing about the movie that is leading to this? Thanks!

John been’s saying for days that at 60% and now even at 53% the majority of critics like it so it’s still a thumbs up….I wish school had that same way of thinking about the grading scale as you John.

It's bad, this will go down below 50%.
With school, there’s an expectation that you know a good amount of the material, not just slightly more than half.
So from what I’m understanding, the one thing as to why Eternals is performing like it is, if I were to point it out, *not having seen it yet* but Marvel diverting from the formula that’s worked for over a decade. Don’t fault them for trying something different but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If audiences react the same as critics then I think we can for definite say that it’s the formula that attracts the majority of people.
Why it's performing like it is? It's currently expected to open bigger than Shang Chi.
Well I heard the villains in eternals are weak and have zero personality whatsoever and some characters are underdeveloped and the film seems to be biting off far more than it can chew. Like Angelina Jolie's character is struggling with her mental health PTSD or whatever but some people were complaining they couldn't emotionally connect to the material

Marvel Studios "under advertised" Shang-Chi though, while they "over advertised" Eternals. Even John has said that a couple of times now. They should have reversed that...but should have, could have, would have don't matter now.

Idk if that's true again...but I'll be real irritated if that's the case. Every studio should be allowed to stretch their legs and try different types of stories.

I highly doubt the lackluster Deviants are the reason for the negative reviews. Plenty of the MCU films got away with bad villains as they still managed to land a fresh RT score.
In the meantime, Sony is milking their lone franchise and using the rough gallery as stand alone movies

@@stormtraitor6545 Exactly. I mean that has been the Marvel way. Introduce a new charater via cameo in another movie. Then give that character a solo movie and then bring the characters who have had a solo movie together for and team movie. That way most people already know the characters and care about them.
But with the eternals they introduce 10 new charcters in a team movie and people feel nothing because they are all new. Plus the need to explain the lore essentially.
Thanos was built up. We didnt need to have a 2 hour movie about explaining his backstory. We already knew he was the big bad. And has was compelling because HE believed he was doing the right thing. Not just being bad or yeah i like to end the universe because...

I saw the film today, and I really enjoyed it. I can see why you wouldn't like this film that much, but the great elements of this movie definitely outweigh the negative aspects.
Totally agree, it wasn't that typical super hero movie, it wasn't that full of action but i really liked it.
This felt like a film. Not a typical MCU fun bash
The fact the MCU managed to go 25 movies in a row without a Rotten Score Is a great achievement.

Hearing that this film is unique from most mcu movies makes me wanna watch it more
Same here. I also have a few trusted critics I follow that typically review things very fairly, like Peter Travers. He gave the movie a positive review, but also re-iterated that people looking for the boilerplate Marvel stuff are going to likely be turned off by the focus on dramatic elements. I think that’s where the negative feedback is coming from. This movie isn’t Avengers or something like that. It’s may be more in line with something like WandaVision.
I'd like the RT score to be higher - but I'm still looking forward to seeing it. Hope I like it.

Greetings from Germany. I saw the movie yesterday. The film is very philosophical, deep and emotional. Many people could say: "I want to see a MCU movie and and not a philosophical movie". I want to see more of that in the MCU and I hope Ms. Zhao makes another MCU-movie too.

I liked the movie and I'd rate it 8/10 and I have my "but" .. it's not a perfect movie.
Saw Eternals last night- yes, it is very different to the other MCU movies & yes if the big bad is a major selling point on your enjoyment of the movie, then as John says you probably won't like it I guess... Eternals villains are more ambiguous than the standard comic book 'big bad' trope IMO (can't & won't say more to avoid any spoilers- looking forward to Sunday's spoiler discussion). It is a visually gorgeous movie, heavily character driven & man oh man does it have depth to it.
I thoroughly enjoyed it tbh, if I had to choose between Shang Chi & Eternals as the better movie, I'd have to pick Eternals.
It has a more mature tone to it than any of the other MCU movies I think... not mature in terms of content, just tone- being a deeper, fuller & more weighty tone than the others IMO.... Not sure if I'm expressing my thoughts very clearly or at all well, so the best way I can think to do so is via comparison- The MCU Spiderman & Shang Chi movies in particular have more of an immature tone about them IMO (not a knock on the movies at all- they just have a lighter, younger tone to them). The majority of other MCU movies feel a littler older tone wise, but not mature IMO ie. Iron man, Capt America to name a few. I sort of think of them as the young adult stage of the MCU now. Eternals steps it up into a more mature tone, it's a deeper, fuller, more weighty sort of movie compared to the others IMO. Hard to explain without spoilers, so I'll quit now & eagerly await Sunday lol.
I agree one hundred percent, especially about Eternals being character driven. One thing I think critics miss, and I hope I'm not giving anything away by saying this, is that the movie is primarily driven by Gemma Chan's character, Sersi. The way I see it, Eternals is not about the group of superheroes as a whole, rather it is about Sersi and her relationship with the other Eternals. Hence why it focuses so deeply on character, but not for all of the heroes. And the fact it is tonally distinct from the rest of the MCU is why I love it so much.
@@Ngamotu83 Agreed about the focus being more on Sersi- I'll not add to your thoughts on why, for fear of spoiling, other than thanks to the marketing I was a little unsure where it was going at the start with the character focus, but rather quickly gathered what they were doing & fell into the story telling.
I don't think being different actually increased my enjoyment of the movie personally. although I'm glad it did for you- I simply enjoyed it for what it was above & beyond being part of the MCU... I kind of felt it was a bit more like Dune (which I also enjoyed) tonally speaking, than say Shang Chi, so I guess films that skew more towards cerebral & weighty are my cup of tea atm.
I do have a long standing fascination of ancient cultures, so of course that aspect gained it some brownie points... but then Shang Chi had dragon things, so it got double brownie points for that lol.
I also don't think the movie is without its flaws- a pet peeve of mine which involves the use of a certain type of stylised filming was present throughout the movie & had me sigh in annoyance more than once, but that is not specific to Eternals, it's present in a lot of successful movies & TV series- I'm just a weirdo for finding it annoying even when I know why it's done & acknowledge it can make for some beautiful imagery & moments.
I also think more work could have been done with regards to some of the... umm things... so hard to discuss without spoiling. I'll just leave it as, despite it not being a perfect movie (doubt one even exists & if it does, I seriously doubt there is 100% agreement on what it is lol), it is a great movie & one I eagerly await to see the next instalment of (although I admit I'm not excited by the end credits like some people are- I actually found the first one a bit of a turn off tbh, but again spoilers, so must wait until Sunday!)

@@paulkem1130 Never said it was a "radical change", I explained that "IMO" it is tonally different, which is why people are saying it feels (various levels of) different to their expected norm of a marvel movie- again IMO.
Of course it has MCU elements to it- it's science fiction/fantasy/drama/action set in the MCU after all- it's not like you go in expecting MCU & instead get The Piano or Rocky Horror Picture Show to watch. People are talking with-in the context of MCU- it simply is a different feeling movie to what has become the normal formula, but you feel differently & that's cool- film is art & art is subjective.

In Leipzig the Audiance was not very big and most people didnt enjoy this Movie.

I’d say Loki already did that to me in regards of making what happened in the MCU so far seem little and insignificant. When the time cops lol had infinity stones as paper weights it totally made Endgame seem not so epic anymore.

It's funny...this was originally hyped to be the MCU film that transcended the formula that Marvel was super excited and proud about. Really seems disconnected from the critics' views.

after beauty and the beast and getting an animated film nominated for best picture, the two projects on the horizen were lion king and pocohantas, all the best animators at disney lobbied to be on the pocohantas project because it seemed deep and meaningful and oscar bait. but it flopped, and the B team that made Hamlet with lions had the biggest hit and one of the most beloved films in disney history
sometimes when you set out in advance to make this big deep award winning thing, it's a dud, and the thing you made for fun was the thing that was deeply meaningful
probably means we aught to stick with making things for fun and just letting the people decide what is deep and meaningful after the fact
Feige predicted it would win Best Picture. I think the fact that Zhao is the reigning Best Director/Best Picture winner made critics have high expectations.

Interstellar is a 72%, Fightclub 79%, Man of steel 56%, Joker 68%, i can give 2 shitz about a rotten tomato critic score. All 100 for me.

Saw Eternals yesterday night and I loved it 💫 I was very emotionally invested in the characters and their internal struggles
Personally, I really don't like the creation narrative they decided to go with. It causes a number of problems for the MCU:
1) It takes away the mystery of the universe by saying "Subject A made Subject B, so that Subject C can bla bla bla..." Similar to how Alien Covenant ruined the mystery of the Alien franchise. It gives the audiences answers for questions they weren't asking.
2) Ironically, making the scope of the MCU have such large proportions sort of shrinks it, for the same reasons mentioned above, similar to how modern Star Wars projects actually make the galaxy feel smaller in scale, since we are always running into familiar faces/places.
Alien Covenant was amazing imo 🤷♂️

Dude I saw Eternals yesterday! I LOVED IT!! I honestly feel like people who are heavily religious will roll their eyes and/or zone out at this just because they are conditioned to do it when anything does a life creation story that isn't based on their beliefs. I was engaged, the acting was great, and it was an interesting story!
I'm a very religious person, and personally I'd imagine itd be more offensive if they actually said "God" created this fictional movie universe. The fact it's a celestial a fictional character is most appropriate. But to your point, I can totally many religious folks getting butthurt. Lol

My friend was one of the lucky ones who got to see it early and he really liked it. Not his favorite MCU, but he really liked it and doesn't understand what movie the critics saw.

I think it's about to become a trend for critic's to downplay superhero movie's thinking there opinions hold more weightt then they really do but if that's the case they'll learn real fast that their opinions don't matter to anyone who has a mind of their own.
I’m now kinda convinced you get a check on the side from Disney to be able to stay awake to watch this movie 3 times. It’s an ok flick. Could have been so much better with some editing. Kevin also should have stepped in a bit.

From what I've heard from all reviewers who gave negative reviews, they mostly complained about the movie being too focused on lore building, dialogue focused and less marvel-like compared to other marvel movies. I consider all those positives so I will almost certainly enjoy it.
They complain about way too much exposition, a bloated and overstuffed movie,weak villain,unfocused and weak cript and how the movie tries to be different but fails to pull off and ends up being an MCU movie.
That's just a few of the complaints among the many I've read from critics.

@@MatiZ815 General audiences generally don't like slow-paced films and critics like them more. General audiences tend to also be more appreciative of comedies than critics

Yawn🥱🥱, this has been a long time coming. So many marvel films deserve low scores but never got them: Iron man 2, Dark World, GOTG2 etc. About time marvel got the scores they truly deserve
I disagree on GOTG2 deserving a low RT score swap it out with Age of Ultron though And you can add Iron Man 3 to that list.

I don't think Shang-Chi 2 or 3 is a given yet. Simu's comments on China had that film banned there and there is no way that Shang-Chi will be in an Avengers film because if he was, it would not be allowed to be released in China because of those comments. Sad but true.
Marvel fans will probably give it a 90%+ audience score just to "spite" the critics even if some of the fans actually agree with the critics.
I dont understand problems with deviants. they were not main villain, and I actually enjoyed them. it feels to me like if people complained that mobsters in the dark knight dont have enough depth. for me big issue was lenght. too much stuff could be just cut out of the movie. the whole "building family back together" part was simply too long and it dragged movie time too much. for me the most disturbing part was that Gilgamesh looks too much like Wong to me. I spent huge time to figure out if he is a same character or not.
By the time all the reviews are counted, Eternals will be in the mid-40% range on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score will probably be in the 60% range.
MCU fans will make sure to rate it highly to "stand up" to critics, regardless of their true feelings about the movie. So I don't expect it to be lower than 80% audience scores

I watched a few UA-cam movie reviews for Eternals and they liked it. I remember a movie getting a negative critic review of 56% and a audience positive review of a 89%. That right there let`s me know that people don`t give a Fuck about movie critics, cause usually they have no taste on what everyone else might like. Just cause YOU don`t like it. Doesn`t mean I have to NOT like it too.
But critics never tell anyone to not like a movie, they tell people why they, as critics, didn't like it. Critics opinions are valued more since, presumably, they went to journalism school, are film buffs, and/or understand better than others what makes a compelling story/characters and can identify underlying themes that a regular movie goer may not

This could be a great sign...if the standard bubble gum movie fan that has fallen in love with Marvel movies watched this and it challenged them in new ways and they have a negative response to that it could mean the rest of us, that can handle it, are in for a fun ride. The masses don't define anything, they often act as the "South Star", as in, the way NOT to go.
Problem is they have strayed from the comic books so far just to please certain things

I’m not too happy about this. I haven’t watched Eternals but from what I’ve heard it has come to my understanding that it doesn’t follow the normal marvel formula. It getting bad reviews will make Feige keep using the same formula for all the movies.
I find it hard to believe that critics cared that it had a gay character when moonlight exists. I think the people saying that are preemptively blaming "toxic fans" for a movie that may bomb compared to other mcu films. Critics are very progressive. So its just not that good of a movie most likely.

I’m seeing the film on Saturday with 11 of my friends and people who are in my year are also going at the same time at the same cinema so this does feel like a major event for me honestly 😂😂.
I don’t really have any expectations because I could love the film for being so different from the MCU films and love it as something completely different OR I could not enjoy the film because of the introduction of so many new lead characters (more then any other Marvel film in terms of introducing all these hero’s) and it feeling so different that it doesn’t belong in the MCU and just doesn’t work for me.
Me not knowing how I’m going to react to this film is actually part of my interest in it.

It's not really a negative either. They achieved what they set out to do in making a film that's different from the ones before it. I enjoyed it. Most MCU movies I've enjoyed and have been happy to wait until it's released on streaming to view it again. It's the first MCU movie that has made me want to see it again because I'm sure there's stuff I missed on the first viewing that will help understand the characters.
Last year nobody knew who Eternals and now they are a household name.

I still kind of feel like this is the end result of creative differences between a talented Director and talented Producer. That's probably why Directors like Edgar Wright who have a very specific style of directing don't work with MCU/Kevim Fiege

I’m surprised to see this score dropping in general, let alone how much and how fast, but I’m honestly so incredibly excited for this movie. I love what Marvel Studios has done so far and I appreciate them taking a departure from the typical way of doing things.
They explain the Deviants mission/origins quite well I think. I understood why they were there.
I think involving a gay character in an MCU movie is a dumb move, super heroes are made for kids in the first place, now doing this are we trying to force this idea slowly into the future generation minds? Morals are slipping away slowly and we as a society gotta be careful, on the other hand I love film scores and huge fan of Ramin Djawadi and always get excited when I know that he will score a new movie, when I listened to his score on that one I got the feeling that he was lost as a composer to capture the required emotion of the film which tells me that even the makers of the film struggled to identify with it.
I just saw the movie today, I really liked it, but I agree with John on most of his points about the movie. It’s a lot to unpack and I will have to watch it again some time to fully understand it. I think it’s because since it’s being directed by a director who’s last movie seemed like it was a kind that was not like the types of movies that the MCU makes at all (I wouldn’t know for sure cause I haven’t seen it, but I did watch the trailer and it did seem that way) a lot of the critics who saw it probably thought that that type of style really clashed with the action superhero stuff, because yeah, the MCU’s style of movies is pretty much polar opposite to the style of Nomadland (Or again just from what the trailer showed me) It’d be like getting the director of 12 Years A Slave to direct Ant Man: Quantumania, where it’s like yeah it’s a good director who directed a good movie but this doesn’t seem like their type of style at all, in fact to tell you the truth I actually think the audience rating for this movie is gonna end up being even worse than the critic rating, because those people are gonna be even more put off by the style of an indie drama rearing it’s head into a movie that’s also trying to continue being the action superhero franchise that they like, so I think this movie is probably gonna be remembered in the MCU’s history as a strange little experiment that did grab some people but it ultimately ended up alienating a lot of the traditional fanbase
Today was the first day of eternals here in Germany and the theater I work at.. Well let's say it like that. James bond in its last week had more viewers than all screenings of eternals Today
this has been my most anticipated film of the year, critics are very split on this movie, wonder which side I'm going to fall on once I've seen it, the concept and large scale of this movie sounds really cool to me, so hopefully I'll be satisfied with that aspect. not exactly thrilled about it having weak villains though.

Every time I see the lame trailers for this movie the Deviant monster things remind me of the Scrunts from Lady in the Water.
Whatever the critic score is. I can't remember a time that I was this excited to catch a nearly rotten scoring film.
I mean it has the same rating as man of steel but I loved that movie.

Man of steel was a single character driven story with a villain with a story arc this one isn’t
Man of Steel was like the start of the DCEU, it did not pretend to be a Marvel film the way this is channeling DC, it also featured characters the general public is familiar with, in 2013 people didn't sacrifice storytelling for diversity, and yes in spite of all that, you might like this film, but still.

I had a thought that marvel will struggle after infinity saga..but that is something else.
I saw Eternals last night, and it’s absolutely fine. Maybe the characters are not as charismatic as in past movies. However, the scope is grand. The action is great. It looks beautiful, and overall sets up a grand expanse of the MCU.
It’s going to take a minute for Marvel to get back to Endgame levels of hype, but they’ll get there.

All the reviews I saw is that they are trying to do something different but they try to put the formula so people can Remember is part of the MCU and that impacted the movie because is cutting what the movie is.
Basically the movie wants to do something different but the suits want to shoehorn the formula
I quite disagree with your statement on the deviants. The deviants were seen as creatures just like the eternals once they are revealed to be less "sucessful" variants of eternals, ones that could evolve. So in a sense its the deviants as a species just like the humans that want to survive, no longer do they want to be run to extinction because the celestials deem them so. It kind of gives a human sense to the deviants, saying that they are like humans and want to survive as a species and will fight for it. In the end there were no villains, simply there were entities that were striving for their own interests. In the end the interests even with a villian like ikaris clash together and give a satisfying outcome.
I got to see an early screening of this movie yesterday. I actually really enjoyed it. It's 100% different than any other Marvel movie. I would say you need to enter this movie not thinking of it as a Marvel film at all. Definitely stay for both post credit scenes.
I saw the movie today and wow, critics are doing this movie wrong. Is it one of the best MCU movies? Nah. But does "Eternals" finally do something different and break out of the Marvel formula? Definitely. I wouldn't be surprised if fans react in a split way. But for critics to think it's the worst of all the MCU movies is almost an attack against cinema.
I'm really curious about an audience score
Just came back from watching it. I saw it as a personal drama with the marvel's space background. Loved the character and, because of that, loved the movie. Can definitely see how people, who prefer to spend way more time with characters to really warm up to them, would dislike this movie. Especially if all they expected was just a marvel action blockbuster.

After watching it I can see the flaws but I don't think its a bad movie overall. For me, it was the story.. I like it but I feel like they couldve made a series on Disney Plus to expand on it.. But the acting, action scenes, Makkari, and the cinematography was really good. Not to mention who the anonymous voice was in the last credit scene I mean my god 😩 What I like most about this film is that it feels completely different and even if it does flop I'll give them props for trying to bring in an alternate atmosphere. 7/10

Negative reviews on RT but John’s seen it three times. John likes it but not sure if others will like it. I’ve enjoyed every Marvel movie but the ones I enjoyed the least are (3) Age of Ultron (2) Iron Man 2 (1) The Dark World. Last week I thought Black Widow was awful, then I watched it again on Sunday and it’s better than I remembered or better than i thought. Only two MCU movies have I loved straight out the gate: Civil War and Endgame.
I cannot wait to see Eternals.
Read the reviews, there are a lot of them from people that did not even watch the movie, they are just leaving a negative review because they are not happy with Marvel's inclusion politics.

Haven't seen the movie yet but It sounds like maybe instead of scrolling words to talk about creation, they should've did what Black Panther did when talking about the creation of Wakanda, have a voice over with visuals.
I saw nomad land and walked away confused as to what I missed cause I didn’t think it was THAT good. My guess is that the directors style is an acquired taste, and for better or worse she’s brought it to the MCU. Either way, I’ll watch the movie with an open mind and hope to love it like all others before.

It was quite clear that the story wasn’t the priority. All we ever heard about this movie was how “diverse” it was and how it had a gay character in it.

Most of the Marvel villains are sub-par. It's 7 to 8 good ones and 3 of that 7 or 8 are probably considered great. Although even the bad ones are a little more then "Monster Bad". If that's the way it is

I've yet to see the movie but I've heard a lot of different opinions on it. So my opinion might not hold any weight since I haven't seen the film. But just picked up what I've heard so far. A lot of people with family expect a marvel movie to have a family feel to it. At least from what I know marvel movies to be. And as a father I don't think I would want my children hearing that life and all of mankind was created by some sci-fi story marvel character. An I'm not religious but I wouldn't want my children picking up anything from a marvel expecting something similar to what they've given us in the past. But I can't be upset they tried something different
