That was what mine looked like ! I recently bought a house with a "pool" that hadnt been serviced in about 3 years. It had fish , turtles , frogs and probably the Creature from the Black Lagoon.. I worked hard at it but wasted a lot of money on chlorine trying to add it gradually and finally saw a couple videos on the slam method. Finally got it cleared after brushing it twice a day, vacuum and high chlorine till it died. Thanks for the video

Baking Soda, TONS of Chlorine and I'm still struggling. I had No Idea that Chlorine versus CYA was so intertwined. I will be trying this again tonight to minimize UV exposure. Thank you for the video guys!
Thank you so much! I continue to explain to my family every summer that we have to slam the pool every time we open it with the same. And last night I re-instructed my husband to do it again ....tada...this morning no more cloudy. Getting ready to clean the filter and vacuum. Thanks so much. This was very helpful!
20000 gallon vinyl pool, in as bad a condition as the one in the video. I couldnt drain mine since its a salt pool and i didnt want to destroy my grass. I Used the SLAM method per directions. Took me 30 gallons of chlorine and once it was like blue milk, 2 weeks of filtration to get it crystal clear. Though i got rid of the cartridge filter my pool came with and got an 18" Hayward Sand filter w/ 1hp matrix pump, and i purchased the 40,000g version of your Inyo Salt Generator. Its running at 48" power during the few hours its on to keep the pool chlorine level perfect. Thanks Guys!
I used to let my pool get green in winter. I don't anymore, too hard to get back into condition. Easier to keep on it once a week throughout the winter in FL.
Thank you! My pool is always difficult. I travel for work and sometimes my kids don't keep up with it. Your video helped me get my pool blue in 7 days.
Thanks a lot!!! After a couple of days of heavy showers in my city, my water became very cloudy and green and I turned it into crystal clear water less than 3 days after my ex-pool cleaning guy told me after looking at my water for 3 seconds only solution was to replace all the water (of course for a hefty fee), I said the hell w it and lost my fear of opening my filter, Thank god I did that. My 2 cents worth for people trying to clean their pool: 1-Backwash/clean your filter before doing anything and run the pump overnight 2-Add the algae remover you prefer and shock at least twice 12 hours apart, I did it 3 times to make it safer 3-Backwash you filter again and add water clarifier, keep running the pump 24 x 7 all this time until crystal clear 4- Full clean/wash your filter at the end. Check your php and chlorine levels daily during this process and adjust accordingly. 5-Once clear, run pump 8-10 hours a day depending on your environment conditions, you'll be amazed as how easy it is to DIY... Good Luck and thanks for the honest pool cleaners around...
I had a pool boy and my water turned green!! Why? Because he was spending more time talking to my daughter than cleaning my pool. Had to fire his butt and I became the pool boy! Pool is crystal clear now and I save $65 a month!
I'm also a pool man in Southern California and I heard from some other old pool man who's been in this business for 40 years and it used to be $40/month 40 years ago. $65 is just a pain in the ass to make a living these days. No wonder your pool was green.
Thank you for this informative yet brief video. I feel now like I really can restore my own pool myself. (Just bought a house with a pool for the first time.)
Thank you Linda B, we are glad the video was of help. I really think this is easiest method especially if you just get a little algae bloom. The key is to test regularly and the 3 key items to keep in balance are Chlorine, CYA and pH if you can consistently keep these 3 values in the proper range then your pool maintenance should be quite easy. Thank You www.inyopools.com
Linda B Me to! I just got my first house. Killer deal also. It has a in ground pool. It's a pile of crap rite now and needs lots of work. But I'm super stoked!! I've never had a pool. Or never could afford to maintain one. Well once I did but it was a like a shity Walmart pool. This one is in ground. 4-9 feet! The pump is in a separate little shack. And it actually works. It's a jacuzzi brand. Hopefully I can get this fixed within a month so the kids and I can swim. So Fucken excited
Hi, thanks for the great video! I have a 10k gallon indoor heated lap pool that is in trouble... It had minimal use, and chlorine was kept low. Pretty easy to maintain until a bunch of teenagers turned the room and the pool into a party place (of course grown ups were out of town!). Long story short: horrible algae bloom, and zero (unmeasurable chlorine). Coming back I started SLAMing: shocked it with initially 6 gallons of 8-9% liquid chlorine, and kept monitoring and repeating for many days -at the end, it had more than 40 gallons of chlorine poured into it!- until it finally passed the OCT. Meanwhile, pH has been dropping fast. By the time I got the chlorine to stabilize, I had an acid bath (pH
Hi, We would be glad to help! Could you post your test results to the comments section as this would help us out quite a bit in making the proper suggestions.
Thanks a lot! Things seem to have gone from bad to worse during the day. I had the Cl under control through yesterday until this morning, but it has gone down dramatically during the day :/ Current chemistry is: CL: 1.0 to 1.5 pH: 6.8 Total Alkalinity: around 500 (is this even possible???) I only have a simple dual test kit and a Master Pool Multitest 1200V, so I don't have more data to give you. I'm starting to think that the reagents in my multitest have gone bad. I can take some water to the store tomorrow to get a complete analysis.
I have a 30,000 gal. pool that was a slightly less extreme version than in the video abandoned by the former owner of the house and I hammered it hard with chlorine, but was left with very cloudy water for a week. From top to bottom the particles of dead algae were very thick. The filter was just not helping clear it up after that time so I used flocculant and let it sit for 2 1/2 days after recirculating for 3 hours. Miracle stuff. The water turned crystal clear and the bottom was covered with the dead algae. Took two days of vacuuming very slow and carefully on waste/refilling with fresh water and now the pool looks amazing.
We have a 22ft above ground saltwater pool that turns green everytime it rains. We are just opening it up for this year. Last year we struggled with it constantly.
We started the year with a fairly clear pool, Then it went very green, we tried shocking and using anti algae. It cleared a little but still partly green, did a lot of more shock Chlorine reading was negative and this happened several other times so then changed the sand in our filter tank. Back washed and added shock . Next morning pool lot better but cloudy . Chlorine reading OK . The following morning pool still cloudy Chlorine reading once again negative, not sure what we should now be doing . Weather at the moment is 35 to 40 degs . We leave summer cover off in the day but cover at night, Any help would be greatfull Friendly regards Royston Watkins ( France )
Why not just drain the pool and start from scratch--clean the filter and when drained use a mixture of chlorine and water on the pool and then refill with good water---water is cheaper then all the chemicals that you are going to add---
good video! we have a saltwater pool that always turns green during the winter ~ does this process and all the specific steps still apply to a saltwater system?
My pool water looks the same having just went through months of no chlorine here in Louisiana. How much shock should I start with if I have a 10,000 gallon above ground pool? I have a sand filter. Do I need to change out the sand daily until clear? Thanks!!
Hello; I was out of home for 2 months and now I have a lot of algae in my pool. I saw your videa and meassured the Cyanuric Acid leve is 100. My pool is 13800 galons. How much cyanuric acid should I add. I can still add around 1800 gals of fresh water because I drained some water removing some of the highly saturated water with algae.
I am going to take pics of my pool~it is worse than one in video~been at least ten years since open. Then I am going to follow your directions to clean this and when done take another pic~I will share them on your web page if I can~hope this works, got a lot of work to do!
Been using the SLAM method since 6/30. Results for water: FC: 16 CC: .5 CYA: 40 PH: 7.7 TA: 120 Pool is still cloudy in the deep-end with a tint of green. Been like that since 7/6. Any suggestions on getting it clear? I brush and vacuum a few times a day (vacation) but nothing. The Hayward C3030 was installed on 6/30, starts at 12PSI and haven't got up since. Cleaned it every 2-3 days with very little debris... TFP folks say I don't have to clean the filter since it's not over 25%. Should I just leave it or clean it every 2-3 days? Pool is a 23K IG.
Are you running your pump 24/7 or a set time each day? Even though all the algae was dead, the pool in the video took quite a long time to clear up completely (several weeks). It sounds like you're heading in the right direction by installing the Hayward C3030. I would continue to clean it every three days until the pool is clear. Also, make sure you're not brushing your pool and then immediately vacuuming afterward. When you brush it stirs up all the debris that has settled to the bottom. Always vacuum before brushing. You could always try adding a clarifer (goo.gl/eDcmz4) which will coagulate the small dirt particles and make it easier for your filter to grab them. Just keep at it, It will get there. Let us know what happens :)
Been running 24/7 for since 6/30. Added clarifier this morning but still the same. Getting impatience with this pool. LOL! Also been running a dolphin dx4s and it's not picking up anything in the pool floor beside 1-3 acorns. Cartridge on that is clean also. Moving FC to 21 tonight to see if it'll be any different. Don't know why but during the night, I only lose .5-1 FC... Would expect more if the algae are still hanging around.
I have an inground saltwater pool. Parts broke and was in the winter so I let it got way green. After getting alot of the leaves and pollen out can I shock it and run the filter system with some debris still in it because I cant see it? Thanks in advance for any help!
I have spent about $400.00 so far in the past 3 months trying to get my pool clear. It is really green.. I added stabilizer about a week ago. I have not added anything else because i dont know where to go from here.. But after watching your video i think i should start adding liquid shock.. Will that work i have levels of chlorine right now that are.05. I have 12 gal of liquid shock. How many should i start with.. My pool is 13000 gal.
Lalah Miller try testing for p.h levels of p.h is high add muriatic acid and then throw in some cal hypo if you have a plastered pool.cal-hypo is a stronger shock then liquid chlorine .....etc etc
My swimming pool was green and we put a chlorine it turned to blue we vacuum the floor and it’s clean I checked the gadget from the pool pump it says it’s 10 so it’s clean
Hi! I live in guadalajara mex. I work in this! Maintenance of pools, some times i have to do that process, we must put the multiport valve on recirculate among 2 hours, and apply pH+ and "clarificador" (i dont know how is the right word in english) in base of requeriments. Better to do in evening than morning. :) good vídeo

hello you said add 3.5 gallons of 10% chlorine. however in your calculator. gallon was only 96 oz.. so was it really 3.5 gallons or 3.5 - 96 oz jugs?? thank you
I need your help I have an above ground pool that holds approximately 7500 gallons of water and it's green please I need your help getting it clear again so my grandkids can have fun this summer
Hello Clive - Following the instructions in the video will help clear up your pool. The key is to maintain a strong chlorine level throughout the process and to clean the filter whenever it is full. The filter may need to be cleaned multiple times a day.
I have small parasites in my above ground pool it happened in 2 days it has been raining non stop and us still raining. It is a above ground intex pool. What can I do. From a cold and wet Johannesburg south Africa
I have an above ground pool. It was green after being neglected for a year. I removed the debris and shocked it but cant seem to get pass the cloudy greenish phase. I backwashed the filter hoping it would help but its still very cloudy
Great point Taavi! If a pool is neglected for a long period of time (4 years in our case) draining the pool and adding new water is sometimes the better option. However, if a pool owner is using city water, the bill for filling a 30,000 gallon pool could be more than the cost of chlorine. We will be releasing a How To video covering the method of water replacement and acid washing in the near future. Thanks for watching!
Depending on the pool type and your environment, completely draining a pool could actually damage it. For example, an older liner will shrink and possibly rip when you try to refill. Or if you have high ground water, a plaster or fiberglass pool could float out of the ground.
Extremely rare for a pool to pop out here in California. Rule of thumb - if there is more than 4 inches of muck, dirt and crap on the bottom - drain, acid wash and refill. Would have drained this one, although it makes this a cool green to blue video.
Well, not everyone lives in CA, so some people viewing this may need to worry about things that you do not. ;) As your water prices increase, following this method becomes much more attractive :)
I have a pool that is 36ft x 15ft. The levels are: Free Chlorine- 10 pH- 7 Total Alkalinity- 80 CYA- unreadable- far under 100 CH-200 The pool has just been fitted with a new sand filter- a Pentair Triton 2. I have been brushing and vacuuming daily and had large algae bloom and I need help almost ready to drain the pool and start over
Including chemicals and labor, you are looking at at least a few hundred ducks. This process is a days-long process; there's no real shortcut. The price could vary greatly depending on your area. We're in Florida, so competition between pool companies helps keep the price in check.
I am anxious to try this. I have done a few others and gotten very little results. I had not heard the importance of the CYA levels to the FC levels before. This makes sense! We have already added two gallons of chlorine, but it is not even close to the shock level. Getting more chlorine on the way home from work to do this over the weekend. Thanks!
Last night it was the last level on the little test strip. I have turned off the salt water pump for now and just running regular filter. chlorine level is just barely below where it typically should be. It's still green though. I had not ever heard of raising to shock level.
I’ve been doing a SLAM for 4 days and have not seen a change yet. I’ve maintained shock level, made sure my CYA was adequate, and balanced my PH before the SLAM. I’ve scrubbed and vacuumed. Help!!
I wish someone made an all in one testing kit that stays in my pool, connected to an app on my phone that will tell me exactly what to do every week. It’s overwhelming to keep a pool in good condition
This is what my pool looks like now. I just got a "new" house, with a pool. No idea how long the pool has been like this. One question, what do you do about the tadpoles?
Adding shock to the pool will kill the tadpoles and the filter will catch them as the system runs. The other option is to scoop them out into a bucket and take them to a pond. Most people opt for the shock treatment.
So I started SLAM. Numbers after a day Free Chlorine 15 ppm, Total Chlorine is 15ppm, pH 8.6, Alkalinity 68ppm, Calcium 260 ppm, CY 49 ppm, iron 0, copper 0.6 ppm, Phosphates 524 ppm and TDS 500 ppm. I think I need raise my free chlorine to 20 ppm. Should I also add ph lower or just focus on keeping my free chlorine at 20 ppm?
I have a question about CYA...opened my pool...it is green :( followed your directions on your video...CYA was at 30, added appropriate amount of chlorine to raise to shock level. Overnight pool has gone from green to cloudy blue, free chlorine levels are still at correct level for shock but CYA levels have raised substantially...CYA is now reads around 200-300???? Should I attempt to adjust this by removing water and adding fresh water?? Please respond with an answer....thank you for your time!
Unless you added a ton of cyanuric acid (CYA), it should not have risen like that by adding shock. I would take a water sample in to a pool store and get a second reading on the CYA level.
It depends on the health of the sand in the filter. If the sand is only a year or so old, I would go through the algae cleaning process and then access it afterward. If the sand is not thoroughly gunked, then you can keep it. But if your sand is 3-5 years old, you may get one to two shock cycles out of it before replacing it.
I am facing a similar situation in my new pool. I suspect that the filtration system and the pump have been under designed, so the filtration is not effective. Is there a connection between the filter and pump size with the formation and stubbornness of the green algae?
An undersized pump / motor / lmpeller will be inefficient, and take longer to circulate . Talk to a pool store . A 3/4 HP is average size motor assuming the pump and impeller are sized for it . Impeller can be bad , if not flowing good.
It was listed in our original blog post: www.inyopools.com/blog/how-to-clean-a-green-pool/ The PoolMath calculator can be found here: www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html
Once you get the pool green and you can’t get it clear you can put alum in it alum is a powder that goes into soil but when it goes into pools for whatever the reason all the green clumps up and floats to the surface then sinks to the bottom vacuum the pool and it’s clear!
Hi I have 22x52 and it is very very green my pump didn’t work correctly last year I gave up and closed it early , could you give the measurements on how much bleach to start with !
A short answer guess: "A lot." You're going to need a lot more than just bleach. First, you need to balance your water chemistry before you think about adding chlorine/bleach/shock. The chlorine is useless if the pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer levels are off-kilter. I suggest using our how-to guide article, which thoroughly reviews each step with charts and explanations: www.inyopools.com/blog/how-to-clean-a-green-pool/?Keywords=how+to+clean+green+pool
My pool turned green. When we gave the shock and tested it shows Chlorine 10 Alk 120 pH 7.2 Cyanuric 150 Even after the treatment it looks green. What should I do now?
Chad Bull I agree 100% they need to drain and remove all the garbage. Acid wash the wall and you got to know that water was stale as hell. These guys really don’t know what they’re talking about.
We also have a video where we drain and clean the pool. The Drain and clean was a quicker method compared to continuously shocking the pool and cleaning the filter. Here is a link to that video. ua-cam.com/video/F9SlkL_AiHY/v-deo.html

Aluminum sulfate (Floc & Vac) is a great option and will speed up the process of clearing up a pool. We recommend it for people who are having trouble clearing up the pool after they have killed the algae with chlorine.
Thank you for this excellent video. My 35,000 gallon pool was pretty green and following your video I was able to pretty much clean it up. The first day lots of the algae was gone. But there's now a very small amount left on the walls and it appears that it will stay there. I'm still shocking my pool, brush the walls twice a day and clean the filter every day. I just don't know why this small layer of algae won't go away.
Does it lighten up if you rub a chlorine tablet on it? If so, it should continue to lighten up if you keep the chlorine at shock level. You can also try rubbing the stain with a pumice stone if it's a gunite surface.
@@Inyopools Thank you SO MUCH for your reply! I do have a gunite surface. Using a chlorine tablet is a fantastic idea and I'll try that today. I also have a stainless steel swimming pool brush for algae and when I use it, it comes off slowly. We also just acid washed the entire pool. The algae problem started after that acid wash, interestingly.
Here's a question guys. After Hurricane Zeta a few months ago, I had close to a swamp pool. killing off the algae was the easy part. however, I now have a crystal clear water pool, but it's an aqua light green color from a green stain all over the bottom and sides of the pool. Up within a foot or so from the top, it's white, and the steps are white. It looks perfectly fine, but it's not blue, it's a very light green. I've tested for Phosphates, and metals and treated accordingly. Suggestions?
It sounds like the algae has stained the pool surface. My recommendation would be to keep the chlorine up around 10 ppm for a week straight and see if that lightens the surface. Another option would be to drain the pool and scrub the floor with bleach. Pressure washing can be done, but on older surfaces the pressure can damage the shell.
what can be done in climates like here in Africa where we get alot of summer rains and the pool tends to turn green often ? Whats the best way to treat this?
To prevent the green pool, make sure your free chlorine level is always in the 2-4 parts per million range. I would test it every couple of days until you figure out how much chlorine is needed per week to maintain those levels. As far as treating it, add lots of chlorine. The video will explain how to test the chlorine level that is needed to kill algae. You'll know the algae is dead when the pool water looks milky white. That means the algae is dead. Then you need to run the filter 24/7 and clean it multiple times a day until it clears up.
Bought a house with a pool that the previous owners never used ( I think). It's about 20000 gallons and I've got it to go from light green to cloudy blue. I've put all the chlorine they had in there ( except the bucket of pellets). I thought that maybe I put in too much but it still isn't clear. I've brushed , skimmed and vacuumed...going to put two more shock bags in tonight, if that doesn't do then I'm not sure what the problem is???
If it is cloudy blue, you've killed the algae. Now you'll need to filter out the dead algae. I'd recommend using a water clarifier. If you add that and clean the filter multiple times a day, the pool should clear up quickly.
Going to test the water in the pool now it is green at the moment and I would like some help because I don't think the water's ever been absolutely where it needs to be
I would go with the pH value down as much as to 6.8-7 for the SLAM process. With the pH value as high as 7.8, about 80% of chlorine in the pool will exist in the form of hypochlorite anion, and only 20 % in the form of hypochlorous acid. The hypochlorous acid is nearly 100 times stronger a disinfectant than the hypochlorite anion, so you will probably want to maintain high levels of hypochlorous acid for the SLAM process. Once the SLAM process is complete, one can either increase the pH level back to 7.6 (for concrete pools), or maintain lower pH levels for plastic pools which will allow you to keep slightly lower Cl levels over time. What I especially like about your video is that you have mentioned the relationship between CYA and chlorine: I cannot stress how much important this is, especially for owners who use TCCA tablets.
hi all i cannot find a replacement part for Sp-1610-C, are there any replacement parts that are exactly the same? all i can find are impeller that are much thinner than my original, will those still work? thanks in advance
Unfortunately, the SP1610C impeller was discontinued by Hayward. If you have the Hayward Super Pump, there is an upgrade kit. The part number is 5110-53. www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352011066.htm
I have a above ground 16 ft X 48in vinyl summer waves pool will the slam hurt the liner on my pool also it’s green from pump failing and ordered I Tex 12” sand filter to put on my pool thanks
Hi Dave, the SLAM process is pretty much the same for any pool. Just make sure you stick to the chemical levels that we discuss in the video and the vinyl will be fine.
In most cases like this, it would be easier to drain the pool. There are some scenarios where it makes sense to go the route in this video. One, there may be water restrictions where you can't fill up thousands of gallons. Second, it can be very expensive to replace all of the water. Some chlorine and physical labor could be the way to go.
So my head scratcher is ...this is an alternative to just draining the pool I understand that but ....is it an alternative to the environment with all the chemicals why not just compost what you pull? drain it and start over?? Especially if you’re someone that’s taking over the responsibilities ...you know what they’re going to be and this won’t happen again in a foreseeable future.. don’t get me wrong I do appreciate everything you’ve taught me !!!! just wondering coming from an avid pool lover and swimmer extraordinaire!!!
ok starting to make sense the cya determines the amount of shock i need. But if your pool is really green you want to get the cya as high as possible (within the rage, that is) so that i can use a higher dosage of chlorine which is what kills the algae right?
No, CYA protects the chlorine from sun burn off but in a algae infested green pool, that chlorine will be used up by the algae before the sun. Get the CYA in a normal range.

That's awesome, Joanne. Thank you for the feedback!
My 2 cents worth for people trying to clean their pool:
1-Backwash/clean your filter before doing anything and run the pump overnight
2-Add the algae remover you prefer and shock at least twice 12 hours apart, I did it 3 times to make it safer
3-Backwash you filter again and add water clarifier, keep running the pump 24 x 7 all this time until crystal clear
4- Full clean/wash your filter at the end. Check your php and chlorine levels daily during this process and adjust accordingly.
5-Once clear, run pump 8-10 hours a day depending on your environment conditions, you'll be amazed as how easy it is to DIY...
Good Luck and thanks for the honest pool cleaners around...
Hi Fran, so glad to see another successful DIY pool owner. Thanks for the great advice. Keep up the good work :)
I had a pool boy and my water turned green!! Why? Because he was spending more time talking to my daughter than cleaning my pool. Had to fire his butt and I became the pool boy! Pool is crystal clear now and I save $65 a month!
Lmao control your daughter. Its not the pool guys fault
U didnt save shit,,, she hasn't told u yet??? Yep we r pregnant, sorry dad inlaw
Lmao
She could have gone inside while he was working.........
Thank You

Linda B Me to! I just got my first house. Killer deal also. It has a in ground pool. It's a pile of crap rite now and needs lots of work. But I'm super stoked!! I've never had a pool. Or never could afford to maintain one. Well once I did but it was a like a shity Walmart pool. This one is in ground. 4-9 feet! The pump is in a separate little shack. And it actually works. It's a jacuzzi brand. Hopefully I can get this fixed within a month so the kids and I can swim. So Fucken excited
Great video. Clear and concise. No filler. Thank you!
This is the best explanation on how to get your pool from green to clear and keep it that way. Thank you for this video!🙌
Thank you for the praise! It means a lot.
I had the Cl under control through yesterday until this morning, but it has gone down dramatically during the day :/
Current chemistry is:
CL: 1.0 to 1.5
pH: 6.8
Total Alkalinity: around 500 (is this even possible???)
I only have a simple dual test kit and a Master Pool Multitest 1200V, so I don't have more data to give you. I'm starting to think that the reagents in my multitest have gone bad. I can take some water to the store tomorrow to get a complete analysis.
Thank you! Finally a video that makes sense to me. Really appreciate your posting this.
That was not a pool, that was Louisiana.
hehhehehhehheehhehe
Not nice!😂
You've clearly never been to Louisianna
This is one of the best tutorials out there, thank you very much!
We have a 22ft above ground saltwater pool that turns green everytime it rains. We are just opening it up for this year. Last year we struggled with it constantly.
I need sleep. I dont even have a pool. What the hell am I doing here.
hahaha
You are not alone... no pool but watched the whole thing.
Why is this my life right now 🤣 I don’t have one either hahaha
same here swear , it's 3am and i'm just watching it right now
😅😅😅
The best video I've watched explaining how to clear algae
Who else has a pool during quarantine...and is trying to find out why your pool is green?
He..he, MEEE!
Awesome video I just shared it with my husband hope we can get our pool blue again 👍
You won’t
We started the year with a fairly clear pool, Then it went very green, we tried shocking and using anti algae. It cleared a little but still partly green, did a lot of more shock Chlorine reading was negative and this happened several other times so then changed the sand in our filter tank. Back washed and added shock . Next morning pool lot better but cloudy . Chlorine reading OK . The following morning pool still cloudy Chlorine reading once again negative, not sure what we should now be doing . Weather at the moment is 35 to 40 degs . We leave summer cover off in the day but cover at night, Any help would be greatfull
Friendly regards Royston Watkins ( France )
Great video! This helped me so much! Do you add the muriatic acid before testing the CYA?
Haven't had an algae bloom since adding Clearwater Pool Systems RC-50 ionizer. Clearest water and almost no chlorine!
Where did you get that at
really , are you a sells person or advertiser ?
Why not just drain the pool and start from scratch--clean the filter and when drained use a mixture of chlorine and water on the pool and then refill with good water---water is cheaper then all the chemicals that you are going to add---
This was great. I wish I found it May instead of the end of September..
Your video was very informative and helpful. Thank you
Thank you, Pamela!
@@Inyopools Just starting out. I have a question:
Wouldn't it be easier to EMPTY the pool?
good video! we have a saltwater pool that always turns green during the winter ~ does this process and all the specific steps still apply to a saltwater system?
Hello Bred Hed - Yes, the same process would apply to saltwater pools.
Good luck, Angela! We look forward to hearing about your results.
Been using the SLAM method since 6/30. Results for water:
FC: 16
CC: .5
CYA: 40
PH: 7.7
TA: 120
Pool is still cloudy in the deep-end with a tint of green.
You could’ve easily spent 200 bucks on new water after u drained it and then added chemicals from there

Shock the pool? This pool shocks me. 🤯Great video.

The filter may need to be cleaned multiple times a day.
about to try your SLAM process in my green pool
My pool was super green and I just used 4 gallons 😁 I think I need like 4 _6 more🤔 thanks 👍
Would it not be much easier just changing the water?
Well, not everyone lives in CA, so some people viewing this may need to worry about things that you do not. ;)
As your water prices increase, following this method becomes much more attractive :)
Find a neighbor who is not home or does not come out much and "borrow" their hose
Question. Once all of this is done how long does it take for the water to clear up totally?
I have a pool that is 36ft x 15ft. The levels are:
Free Chlorine- 10
pH- 7
Total Alkalinity- 80
CYA- unreadable- far under 100
CH-200
The pool has just been fitted with a new sand filter- a Pentair Triton 2.
I have been brushing and vacuuming daily and had large algae bloom and I need help almost ready to drain the pool and start over
Hello, I have a question, when we should turn on the pump?
just curious, but what should a service like this cost? just bought a home with a pool that hadn’t been maintained in about 1-2 months.
Thanks!
How high is your CYA level? - MGS
Last night it was the last level on the little test strip. I have turned off the salt water pump for now and just running regular filter. chlorine level is just barely below where it typically should be. It's still green though. I had not ever heard of raising to shock level.
Can you give me the actual number the test strip results were? - MGS
Do you have advice to turn a green pool back to blue using bacquisil?
Any advice on cleaning of a sand filter or do you just empty it and replace the sand at algae levels this high?
Where is the calculator you mentioned a couple of times in your video? Every year my pool has a problem with the algae
It was listed in our original blog post: www.inyopools.com/blog/how-to-clean-a-green-pool/

Great video! just started working as retail for a pool company.
I have a 35k pool that needs the be SLAMMMED. looks just like your sample though i doubt there is a lot of debris.
Good luck, John!
A short answer guess: "A lot."
You're going to need a lot more than just bleach.
When we gave the shock and tested it shows Chlorine 10
Alk 120
pH 7.2
Cyanuric 150
Even after the treatment it looks green. What should I do now?
Any advice on “vacuuming” we bought a house with a pool but no working pump so it’s been sitting all fall/winter.
First, the pump must be repaired, or you'll never clean the pool. You can buy battery-powered vacuums, which will help clean a green pool.
I would have drained the pool and acid or chlorine wash it. then woul have filled it back up and rebalance all the chemical levels.
Inyo Pools lol I really like how You didn’t get offended! Most channels would get an attitude at something like that! Just for that I’ll subscribe!
I didn't see you mention draining the old water? Surely you'd do that?
Nope. Generally you don't drain the water unless you are wanting to treat the walls of the pool.
We also have a video where we drain and clean the pool. The Drain and clean was a quicker method compared to continuously shocking the pool and cleaning the filter. Here is a link to that video. ua-cam.com/video/F9SlkL_AiHY/v-deo.html
I have a Vinyl Pool and my TA is 150 and PH is 8.0, can I add Muriatic acid to lower ?
Yes, you can use muriatic acid to lower pH and alkalinity.
just chlorine? I use aluminium sulfate to flock, am I wrong?
Aluminum sulfate (Floc & Vac) is a great option and will speed up the process of clearing up a pool. We recommend it for people who are having trouble clearing up the pool after they have killed the algae with chlorine.
@@Inyopools noice.
Not sure if I understand why you tested for cyanuric acid before you started treating the pool that had been neglected for 4 years...?
Please tell me what kind of medicine for swimming pool green water,
Thank you for this excellent video.
Would not Chlordioxide Solution, CDS, do the same job without poisoning the water? After 3 minutes it changes to Natriumchloride (salt) and water.
Thank you, I am getting ready to do exactly that.
You can do it!
I am getting there. Know what to do now, I think! Thanks
You got this!
Excellent information. God bless you 🙏🏽✔️🎈
Simply pump the pool complete empty, clean it and put new water in
its far more expensive and/or time consuming to do that rather than just treat the existing water as they did here.
Who wants to empty a pool
Water is expensive. $400 to fill up a 30k pool
Excellent!!!! I will give it a try.
what can be done in climates like here in Africa where we get alot of summer rains and the pool tends to turn green often ? Whats the best way to treat this?
To prevent the green pool, make sure your free chlorine level is always in the 2-4 parts per million range. I would test it every couple of days until you figure out how much chlorine is needed per week to maintain those levels. As far as treating it, add lots of chlorine. The video will explain how to test the chlorine level that is needed to kill algae. You'll know the algae is dead when the pool water looks milky white. That means the algae is dead. Then you need to run the filter 24/7 and clean it multiple times a day until it clears up.
@@Inyopools thank you so much
Bought a house with a pool that the previous owners never used ( I think).
The parasites are gross. Do I kill it first with the chemicals or do I vacuum and clean then shock. Pretty please help
Agreed, the chlorine will raise the pH, and Chorine is most effective at lower pH levels.
Did you have to replace the pump at that pool?
Fyi
YES you can drain and start over but they are simply just showing another way to do it. Basically proving that you don't need to drain it.
Yessssssss you can do that but I'm sure your water bill is going to sky rocket instead of just adding a couple jugs of chlorine
FNX I love reading through the comments because they often answer the questions I have in the first place thank you very much!!!
hi all
i cannot find a replacement part for Sp-1610-C, are there any replacement parts that are exactly the same? all i can find are impeller that are much thinner than my original, will those still work?
thanks in advance
Unfortunately, the SP1610C impeller was discontinued by Hayward. If you have the Hayward Super Pump, there is an upgrade kit. The part number is 5110-53. www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352011066.htm
How much do y’all charge for the green to clean process ?
I have a above ground 16 ft X 48in vinyl summer waves pool will the slam hurt the liner on my pool also it’s green from pump failing and ordered I Tex 12” sand filter to put on my pool thanks
Hi Dave, the SLAM process is pretty much the same for any pool. Just make sure you stick to the chemical levels that we discuss in the video and the vinyl will be fine.
learning question - with pool like this, would it not be easier to pump out/drain the pool, clean everything the refill?
In most cases like this, it would be easier to drain the pool. There are some scenarios where it makes sense to go the route in this video. One, there may be water restrictions where you can't fill up thousands of gallons. Second, it can be very expensive to replace all of the water. Some chlorine and physical labor could be the way to go.
@@Inyopools thanks for the response and education :)
Great Info Guys Thanks a lot!
For that pool on video. What is the duration to get it completed? Anyone.
This video was such a big help I was totally lost thanks for the heads up now I know what to do good job guys thanks for making this video
Our pleasure! Thank you for the feedback.
ok starting to make sense the cya determines the amount of shock i need.
